65 problems related to instrument panel have been reported for the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2007

2004 chevy Avalanche 5. 3 liter, 4x4, speedometer first started with incorrect mph, then began to stick on varies speeds, and final it went to 120 mph and stayed.

37 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2007

Several instances where the speedometer read 0 mph when traveling at various speeds. One instance where the speedometer read 120 mph when traveling at 65 mph. Always occurs during first trip in morning and then seems to reset when it has been shut-down and a period of time has passed.

38 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

Speedometer failed to keep accurate speed.

39 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2007

My 2004 Avalanche speedometer started sticking, first I thought I was going about 45 mph, when I realized that I was passing everyone. I accelerated and noticed that the speedometer didn't move. Now it sticks at various speeds and stays that way. It has gone past 120 mph. Gm really needs to look at this problem and fix it. This is a serious safety issue. Especially on reduced speed curves and construction. Is gm waiting for a fatality to issue a service recall?.

40 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2007

The speedometer has malfunctioned on several occasions. Most recently July 24, 2007. I was driving down a highway and it jumped to 75mph -approx 20mph faster than I was actually doing. Upon coming to a complete stop, the needle settled on 21-22mph mark. The needle doesn't move smoothly either. It jitters as it moves and jumps more as it is fixing to come to a rest. After turning the vehicle off, then back on - the needle will fall about 5mph. I had turn shut off / restart several times to get the needle back to 0mph. Today, I drove to work and didn't see a problem outside of a jittery needle. Previously the speedometer has stopped all together while driver and settle on 0 mph or will max at 35mph while driving. At these instances I would pull over, turn the vehicle off and back on to no avail. However, opening the door, which I guess turns off the electricity to the vehicle (radios goes off when door is opened), seemed to reset everything. A few things concern me about this. *I am fixing to take it to a dealer, but I believe my warranty is out and they will not fix it without huge $$$$. *I had purchased a brand new 2003 cavalier and had the same thing happen to the instrument cluster. Luckily, I caught it very soon after, and during warranty, and was able to have it fixed for free. I'm not sure what the dealer will say but I'm not very optimistic about it right now.

41 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2007

Speedometer does not show the correct mph.

42 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2007

Speedometer stops working, sticks or reads too low or too high. Very dangerous.

43 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2007

Speedo at 60 miles per hour when stopped. Increases from there when moving. Can not tell correct speed. Appears to be a common problem with 03 to 06 chevy vehicles. Warranty up on vehicle due to age not miles. Dealer says cost is over $500.

44 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2007

My speedometer and tachometer on my 2004 Avalanche is very erratic, to say the least. On several occasions, the speedometer indicated higher or lower speeds than what I was actually going. The first time I noticed it was on a rainy day when the speedometer indicated 65mph, but afer later comparing the tach to the speedometer, I estimate I was actually going about 80mph. Some times it indicates 0 mph and some times it gets buried over 120mph. This is a significant safety factor and should be recalled and fixed by the manufacturer before someone gets killed or seriously injured.

45 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2007

The speedometer in my 2004 chevy Avalanche is malfunctioning and does not show the correct speed of the vehicle. I notice a lot of other consumers are having the same trouble. What is your organization doing to pressure Chevrolet/GMC in making good on this faulty product?.

46 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2007

The speedometer on my vehicle sticks and does not reflect the actual speed of the vehicle.

47 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2007

Speedometer didn't work at all thought it was just the cold, when it started working, the needle kept going until it was pinned well past 120. That is where it sits right now.

48 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2007

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche z66 and it has 45k miles on it. The speedometer has stopped working. It either sticks in one spot or jitters but I can be in park and it says I am going 60 mph. . Read more...

49 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2007

The speedometer on my 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche indicated a rising speed while, in fact, I was decelerating to try to meet the speed limit (I thought). The needle continued until it was completely off the scale while actually doing about 65 mph. Now, at a stop, it registers about 45 mph and varies with actual speed.

50 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2007

The speedometer on my 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 2wd works erratically. When driving, it fails to work accurately on and off. This can lead to excessive speeds. General motors seems to ignore the hundreds of these complaints and has not issued any accurate repair instructions or a recall.

51 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2007

Rpm gauge, speedometer, and tilting sideview mirrors (while in reverse) doesn't work all the time. The speedometer doesn't read accurately and sometimes the needle doesn't even register a speed. One evening the speedometer was registering 35 mph and I was doing at least 55 mph. That same evening I came to a four-way stop and at acceleration the speedometer didn't work at all the remainder of the trip home. The rpm gauge was the first thing I noticed wrong with my truck and then the sideview mirrors. Sometimes while backing my mirrors won't tilt down.

52 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2007

Over the last few months I have noticed that my 2004 chevy Avalanche speedometer suddenly goes off by 10-80 miles an hour. There are no events that "cause" this to occur, it appears to do it randomly. I notice it when the vehicle suddenly appears to be going faster or slower than the speed indicated. I tried contacting the dealer for repair but they have ignored my online repair appointment submittal. The upsetting part is that my warranty just ran out. This is a major problem and needs to be fixed. Luckily my cell phone has gps and will indicate ground speed. I can use it to verify the vehicle speed. I am lucky that I have not gotten a ticket or killed. I have a photo of my speedometer nearly pegged out at 115 miles an hour to prove it. I have never driven my vehicle that fast. I heard that others are having problem with gm SUV speedometers. This appears to be a wide spread problem.

53 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2007

Around 37,000 miles, the speedometer on my 2004 chevy Avalanche went erratic. The truck was 1 month or 1000 out of warranty. This has led to inaccurate speeds which is posing a danger problem to my young teenage drivers. They do not know how to regulate their speed using the tachometer like I do. I have not fixed it yet because I thought something as important as a speedometer would have been recalled. It appears that their are thousands of these late model gm vehicles that have the same problem.

54 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2006

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The speedometer failed while I was traveling down the interstate and now does not work. I understand this is a trend in 2003-04 Chevrolet's. Recommend a recall to fix this ongoing problem.

55 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2006

The speedometer on the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche works intermittently it will indacate that the speed is 65 mph when I am actuauly going 75 mph. Sometimes it will read the opposie or not at all. General motors has indicated that this is not a safety problem. This is a safety issue. It is very dificult to exit the highway onto a ramp when you are not sure how fast you are going.

56 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2006

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche with 38,456 miles and the speedometer is erratic. It began yesterday, 12/25/06 while driving to my family's christmas dinner. I was on the freeway 70 mph and the speedometer needle jumped to 95 mph without me accelerating. I exited the freeway, came to a complete stop and the speedometer needle registered 35 mph. This morning 12/26/06, the speedometer is still incorrect. It now registers 20 mph in park. I have researched this on the internet and this seems to be a common problem with chevy trucks/SUV's 2003 or newer. It seems GMC needs to issue a recall. Repair cost seem to start at $500 and go up. From what I was able to decipher, the "cluster" needs to be replaced.

57 Instrument Panel problem

58 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2006

Speedometer cluster stopped working. Speed shows 120 mph when stopped or driving. Chevy dealership suggested I "follow someone", but refused to admit this is a safety issue.

59 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

Starting in November of 2006, the speedometer has not operated correctly. When sitting at a stop, it registers 30-50 mph and when actually driving, it goes to 120 and stays there. Does not come back down until vehicle is turned off. This is a very serious issue - or is it Chevrolet's way of earning extra money? the dealer wants to charge over $1500 to fix the problem since due to mileage we are out of warranty.

60 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

1) I haven't replaced anything, or done anything that would cause this to happen. 2) a-problem that im experiencing is that when my Avalanche is sitting still in the driveway the speedometer shows that I am doing 30 to 40 miles per hour. When I drive on the freeway it completely stops working and goes to over 120 mph. B-my drivers side window doesn't work either, the motor slowly started giving out about two months ago. Now it doesn't work at all. . Read more...

61 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2006

No events before speedometer started to stick I was driving on interstate when my needle showed 90 mph but I felt like I was doing 70 mph and when I finally stopped it showed 40 mph and now when driving on interstate I don't know how fast I am going but it shows 120 mph I am driving by rpms I know between 2000 and 3000 rpms I should be around 80 mph.

62 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2006

2004 gm Avalanche have only 38,000 miles on truck speedometer reads 120 when going 50 mile per hour will not zero out. Safety issue. I have read 100's of postings with the same problem. Dealer wants over $700 to repair. Not right after spending lot for the truck this should be a recall.

63 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2006

2004 Avalanche speedometer malfunctioning with 36000 miles. I have done a search on line and have found numerous complaints with the same problem.

64 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2006

Speedometer has quit working, I have recently found this to be a common problem with many different gm vehicles and they are covering it under a recall and my vehicle is not included, yet I have the same issue?.

65 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2006

My speedometer quit working. This is a known defect with the 2004 Avalanche. Other things that have went wrong are the gas gauge doesn't work. This to me is a big safety issue. You cant tell how fast you are going.
