Engine Burning Oil problems of the 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche

Four problems related to engine burning oil have been reported for the 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2020

I have a 2008 chevy Avalanche ltz with the 5. 3l v8 engine with adaptive fuel managment. It was purchased used with 120k miles. It became apparent that the engine was consuming oil, 1-2 quarts per 3000 miles. Recently the engine started producing white/blue smoke on start up and oil consumption increased to 2-3 quarts in 1500 miles. My vehicle is currently at a mechanics shop and I am told that for starters I will need new valve covers that are redesigned from the original ones and that excessive oil consumption is common on this engine. I have read of other owners that have had to have pistons/rings, valve covers replaced, and a baffle placed into the oil pan to mitigate the oil consumption. This seems to be a fairly common occurrence that isn't a typical maintenance issues since these parts weren't oem when the vehicle was made. It seems unacceptable to have to have oem modifications completed out of my pocket for something that seems to be identified as an issue with specific parts made to mitigate the issue. I am very concerned what this acceptable oil consumption will mean for the longevity of my engine.

2 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

Excessive oil consumption. It the 5. 3l with active fuel management system. Gm knowns there is a problem and the only fix is to replace the rings and pistons or replace the entire engine at the owners expense, 5,000. 00 - 8,000. 00. Since it's it's a design flaw, I feel they should fix it at no cost. It consumes over quart and a half per 1000 miles, both highway and city and at times 2 quarts with pulling heavy loads. I have done a oil consumption test with the dealer and they have admitted it goes through a lot of oil. I bought the truck used, and the dealer who sold it to me never mentioned this truck could have this problem.

3 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2013

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer multiple times over a span of three years where it was diagnosed that the throttle position sensor and the program sensor kit needed to replaced. The contact also stated that the LS valve cover, number one plug, cylinder head, piston rings, and a deflector needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired and an oil consumption test was performed over a six month period. In addition, the engine was flushed; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 43,000.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

At 73000 miles transmission broke just a few months out of warranty. Also started experiencing excessive oil consumption and noisy engine. Have heard and read too many reports of people with the 5. 3 liter having major mechanical problems I. E. Camshaft lifters piston rings and valves all going bad.
