Chevrolet Avalanche owners have reported 61 problems related to power train (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Avalanche based on all problems reported for the Avalanche.
The vehicle was sold with significant rust damage to the underbody of the truck. The truck parts are rusted to a point the suspension, and axel are about to fall out. The truck is leaking gasoline due to the amount of rust. The power steering that they fixed after one day driving it had issues when sold is still having issues leaking fluid. It has been deemed unsafe to drive on road. The dealership sold the vehicle in unsafe conditions, and will not rectify the situation. I have documentation, and photos of the damage to the vehicle.

Repeated instances of engine misfire/loss of power due to known issue with 5. 3l engines. Chevy/gm have repeatedly not fixed root cause/issues leading to "stabilitrac/traction control" error messages during engine misfire while driving in traffic. On 3 of these occasions loss power in roads/intersections with oncoming traffic. Two of these occasions, almost caused collisions. Currently truck at dealership since 4/11/22, with warranty company (extended warranty) and chevy dealership discussing mechanical issues with rings, pistons, lifters versus "carbon build up". Engine very low mileage per year. Total milage under 72k. Carbon is in all engines, failure root cause according to research and service department not related to carbon. In conversation with service manager, in past chevy service departments followed guidelines of "stick a plug and wire on it, and send it out". 3/19/16- 4/2/issues started. Reported to chevy performance issues. Did this on 2-3 occasions, air filter replaced one visit, told "without error messages, can not diagnose problem. " 31k mile 6/18/"stabilitrac/traction control" error messages. Engine misfires start. Diagnosis fouled #7 spark plug. Spark plug replaced. Service department verbal comment, "don't know cause, platinum plugs good to 100k, never seen this before"34k mile 2/21/"stabilitrac/traction control" error messages. Engine misfire in traffic. Diagnosis misfires with #7 spark plug. Service replaced valve cover with updated metal flap to stop oil from spraying on plug. Removed intake manifold/clean intake runners of oil deposits 7/31/#7 checked. No issues 53k 11/11/"stabilitrac/traction control" error messages. Engine misfire/ stall badly in traffic. Multiple misfires with #7 cylinder. Diagnosis:no issues found after error message reset. Truck perfect, passed inspection to purchase extended warranty from dealership 4/11/"stabilitrac/traction control"error messages. Engine misfire/stall in traffic. Engine failure.

Vehicle looses power and brakes go out then dies, doesn't matter speed. If slowing down and press the brakes, the locks, lights, and security goes crazy. This is dangerous as it is in intersections and caution for collision. The vehicle has to be off for a time frame and restarts fine and can go. Happened when coming from ramp and in middle of road with semi truck coming down by us.
The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the abs and oil warning lights illuminated. Additionally, the speedometer, the 4-wheel drive function, parking brake, and headlights failed to operate as needed. The instrument panel light failed to illuminate, the gear shifter did not display the selected gear, the sub-frame was corroded, and the wheel hub bearing assembly was fractured. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 142,000.

In October of 2020, my Avalanche only would start in winter after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. It was also on numerous occasions go into limp mode while driving at normal city speeds meaning it wouldn’t go above 25 miles an hour. The entire dash would light up. It threw numerous codes. Had to be towed to get it looked at but then would mysteriously start without issue. I took it to young Buick GMC in layton utah with no resolution. Finally in December 2020 it was determined by now heritage Chevrolet in evanston wyoming to be the onstar module. This part was no longer available and couldn’t be replaced. The dealership’s solution was to wire around the faulty part which has allowed the truck to start and no longer go into limp mode from 70mph on highway to 20mph without notice. I immediately got a hold of Chevrolet to get a satisfactory answer about why I couldn’t get the part that was making the vehicle unsafe to drive. They said the part was no longer being manufactured and it wasn’t their problem sorry about the inconvenience case number [xxx]. I did have the dealership wire around it so I have the truck working, but Chevrolet did not care about the truck going into limp mode suddenly on the highway and it could have caused an accident. They not not offer any compensation for the part not being manufactured and according to to your website if a part is causing a safety issue they are they are required to have that part fixed. I am still upset about their lack of support and service and want Chevrolet held accountable. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Stabilty light came on, loss of power, check engine light, rough shifting into 2 gear. It has been down for 2 years. And not fixed yet, chevy dealership does not know what tpo do. There needs tobe a recall on the flex fuel. We were going down I-20 when all this happened. There was nearly an accident.
Rear end started making a clunk noise during the time one steps on gas to move the truck. Also rear end now makes a holling noise when moving.

This is the second transmission, the clip that holds the transmission line to the radiator breaks allowing the line to come off resulting in all transmission fluid being lost and resulting in destroying transmission.

My transmission when taking off fast sound like it's in neutral and then when I let off the fast it goes in gear. Also my dash board is cracking and found be a serious airbag issue. I've seen hundreds of complaints about this and a recall hasn't been issued. The recall needs to be issued so I could be fixed ASAP. This is a serious hazard. !!!.
We were driving down i20 when we were coming off the off ramp and the stabilization light came on and we got to the stop sign to turn right and as were take off it shifted really bad out into 2nd it jerked really bad and we had no power we made it home and now it turns over but will not start. 2007 avalance it has 50,000 miles. I have been talking to other people on car gurus and there are thousand on that sight having the same problem were having. And the sad thing is we dont have the money to have our truck towed into town and get it fixed. Becasue they tells us that they have so many people having the same problem. I feel like gm should do a recall or people should be able to do a group lawsuit toward gm for such a big deal like this is. And also our dashes are all cracked down the middle. Which on that sight there are alot having same issue.
At 80k I put my truck in reverse and heard a clunk sound and immediately it wouldn't shift gears anymore. I went and had the transmission rebuilt which lasted roughly 10k more. Now, the truck won't shift yet again and the filter was changed and the rear output seal. Currently, when I drive since its my only vehicle, one minute it will shift fine but after I turn the engine off and on again, it will not shift from first and the again, check engine light is on!.

Driving down county rd stopped at stop sign. Started to take off it started slipping then quit pulling completly. Puet it in all drives 1,2,3, & d nothing happened cut engine off put it in drive it started out like nothing happened for short distance then same thing again.
Two weeks ago driving 60mph on highway in snow engine light illuminates and lose total power. "reduce power mode" illuminated but engine shut off. We almost got rear ended by a tractor trailer on us 48 in wv. On side of road for 2 hrs in 20 degree weather waiting on aaa (no shoulder on hway) and motor starts. Take it to garage and get throttle position sensor (tps) code ans stabilitrak/abs code. We had accidentally hit the onstar button a minute before this and mechanic thought that was related so he cleared code and sent us on our way. For two weeks we were good andit happened again on highway in rain us 70east this weekend, again in middle of highway. This time car started after five minutes. Took car to dealer and they state the tps needs replacing and front wheel speed sensor broken. There is a gm service bulletin #11273b where gm acknowledges tps issue and covers replacement of tps for 2008-2011 vehicles. Also bulletin pip3089b for bad wiring to tps for 2003-2006 Avalanches. Gm denied my service despite the fact that a 2007 tps and throttle body are the same exact part number as the defective one. This is super dangerous and extremely frequent as there are 550 posts alone on edmunds as well as many reports to https://forums. Edmunds. Com/discussion/5759/GMC/yukon-denali/GMC-yukon-reduced-engine-power-message/p22. Please assist as they are not standing behind a defective and deadly product as the computer cuts total power right on highway. . .
The truck would not move; feels as if the truck locked up while driving and came to an abrupt stop.
Problems with train mission. I'm a 75 year old driver. Bought Avalanche sly model. Great vehicle and driven easy and is garage kept. Have extended warranty from dealer. Transmission starting to bump as if you could have hiit a speed bump coming out of low into second. Was immediately taken to the dealership. They changed the wiring harness on the transmission. Said it seemed ok. As I picked up vehicle. The first traffic light caught and as I started up at a slow take off it was doing the same problem. Will return to dealership in the morning. Wiring harness fluid and filter change. Total repair to date $596. 00.

My 02 Avalanche has had all the fuel, em brake, wheel hub while husband was stopping at light when the top caliper bolt came out wedging the caliper between the wheel and bolt this stopped the truck sounded like gun fire and the rest end went 8 ft into the air. Air bag not deployed. Cost days pays and $ new bolt to get back on road, no injury. Plus drvr fr axle pass too. 2nd tranny only 4yrs apart has failed again with my 6 grkids on my 56th b. D. In TX 105 * heat index. It took 4 hours to get home having to stop every 10 min for 20 min because it was overheating. My grkids were heat exhausted as was I. I have had to replace the short column in my steering and I have been jiggling the key to start it for appx 8 years now. 2 fuel pumps in less than a year the last one was stuck for 3 hours at gas station w/3 grkids while my d-n-law was waiting to meet me 2 hours from her home. I think that covers most of the investigations and complaints and not one did chevy pay for. I didn't bother asking my husband has 2500 school hours in auto mechanic repair. My trim is faded and have to oil it to keep it from cracking. The truck still drives excellent but you people are who I'm going to sue if something catastrophic happens in that truck for your laxidazical attitude in enforcing the safety laws. How much kick back do you receive from the car companies to not recall their cars and trucks? don't be shocked it is obvious big money dictates what gets recalled. People die for the greed of others and that is pathetic. If you enforced the safety laws stricter there would not be people dying or badly mft'd vehicles causing wrecks scaring people causing ptss. I think this agency is all about making people think you do something when you dont, at least not until 600million cars have to be recalled. 2 should be enough. 1 a repair 2 not a coincidence. Thank you, ns. All while driving.
Engine dies, door locks start opening and closing, all dash lights go off, radio goes off,car starts on own 3 to 6 seconds, did this at 60 mph and at 15 mph.

The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche. While changing gears to the drive position, the gears locked up and failed to move. The contact stated they experienced the same failure listed in NHTSA campaign number: 11v007000 (suspension), but the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rear axle cross pin needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000. The VIN was not available.
At times when the vehicle is slowing down/down shifting (more common when going up a grade) it will suddenly lunge forward (before coming to a stop) even with your foot on the brake. It seems to happen when downshifting from 2nd to 1st gear and sometimes it catches me off guard. This is a very dangerous situation especially when slowing down near people. I am always concerned that the vehicle is going to lunge forward and hit something or even worse someone. I hope NHTSA investigates this situation as other people have reported the same problem.
For no reason and without warning, after a "clunk" noise the truck was coasting. Only 1st, 2nd, and reverse gears work.
I was driving my truck at about 45 mph when the traction control light came on the dash and my truck suddenly went from 45mph to 20 mph and the motor began to miss fire and buck. If there would have been someone following me they would of hit me in the rearend due to the sudden slowing of my vehicle.
While cruising on rt 101 at 65 mph, vehicle automatically downshifted into second gear for no reason. In response, I was forced to decelerate to 35 mph. Tried explicitly placing vehicle in third instead of "d" for drive, but, the drive train was unresponsive. Shortly thereafter, a "hot transmission" message appeared on dash and I pulled over and checked fluids. Fluids looked good. Drove vehicle home in second gear without issue. Upon investigation, I discovered that my Avalanche was built with a widely recognized design flaw and undersized transmission. Various sources suggested I file complaint this address: https://www-odi. Nhtsa. Dot. Gov/vehiclecomplaint/index. Xhtml.
4x4 transmission began locking and slipping. Developed a distinctive "clunking" sound when shifting between gears. Now most noticeable between second and third. Additional grinding sound occurs when driving. Noticeable at all speeds.
When the vehicle shifts from 1st gear to 2nd gear around 17mph there is a loud clunk, and it sounds like the transmission is having trouble. It doesn't shift smoothly. After looking online this is a common issue for the Avalanches. Chevrolet knowingly put in a transmission that doesn't effectively do it's job. The curb weight of a Avalanche is 6000ibs and my uncle owns the same truck, which has eaten 2 transmissions so far with the same mileage.
Recall NHTSA 13voo1000.
I purchased the 2006 vehicle used in Dec 2013. In 2014 the transmission went bad. In 2015 I replaced the transmission and brake pads & roaders. 2016 replaced the fuel pump because it also went bad, replaced tires (normal wear), bought a new battery because it died. 2017 it needed two hub bearing and both front wheel hub replaced. This is an ongoing problem with this vehicle! I just found out my air bag sensor will need to be removed and replaced. All my money has been flushed down to this vehicle. I don't recommend anyone buying a chevy truck.
The steering wheel is difficult to turn or control, went to dealership to fix the problem. After the dealership allegedly fix the problem, we had continued problems with the steering (controlling the steering wheel) and then the transmission caused the vehicle to jump or skip gears, causing the vehicle to be difficult to control. Took it back to the dealership and they were to busy to help us. All of the aforementioned defects caused my husband to lose control of the truck and ultimately flew off the road and vehicle flipped over (roll over).
I've had my truck for 4 years now and its been in the shop 5 times due to transmission problems. I've gotten the transmission rebuilt 5 times and its still giving me problems. 6/2014- present day.
Takata inflators:my air bag light came on, it was reset and came back on a short time after. I have electrical issues with cruise control, radio and fan for heat and a/c. Once in s while I get a smell ofburning wire. My transmission began bumping on acceleration several months ago also when cranking it move forward a bit in park. The transmission bump is when accelerating, the electrical issues are random, the airbag light stays on.
I own a 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche ltz and at times when the truck down shifts it will lunge forward. I really need to have my foot firmly pressed on the brake to keep the truck from possibly hitting something or someone in front of me. It does not do it all the time and it's rather random. I feel that is worse then it happening all the time because I don't know when to expect it. I have not received any notification of a recall, but I feel a fix is definitely in order. Something is not right and it could result in a crash.
I was in line at a drive through at burger king and as I pulled up to the cashier¿s window to pay for my food the engine started to accelerate. I put my foot on the brakes as hard as I could while the truck was shaking and lurching trying to go forward. I can¿t say for sure how high the tachometer was, but it seemed to almost peg for a few seconds while this was going on. Finally I jammed the transmission into neutral and the engine returned to normal idle. I say jammed because it took great strength to get it out of drive. For about 10-15 seconds this truck was totally out of my control. I drove away and parked for a few minutes to gather myself as I was visibly shaken. . I was thankful that no one was in front of me in at burger king or that I was not in a parking lot somewhere where someone could have been injured or killed. I had brought this vehicle in more than once to the dealer (rk cheverolet) and complained about the transmission not shifting properly and was always told they could not find a problem. After reporting this they decided to put a device to monitor the computer. I drove around with this for about 3 months and nothing happened and they said the data collected was inconclusive. Since the truck had just went out of warranty they said they could not do anymore. This is totally unacceptable.
At times while slowing down (close to a stop) the truck will lunge forward unexpectedly pushes the truck forward. This is generally in stop and go traffic. It become very unsafe while the proximity of other cars during this time is very close and could cause injory. This is an intermittent problem.
