Brake Electric Antilock problems of the 1997 Chevrolet Blazer - part 1

While traveling at 25 mph on a wet roadway I approached a vehicle stopped at a stop light. At around 6 car lengths I applied my brakes and the vehicle would not stop, resulting in a rear end crash with the vehicle in front of me. When I applied the brakes the vehicle started to vibrate as if the abs brakes were activating. The braking system failed to provide much stopping power. The speed at the time of collision was about 15 mph, slowed from 25.

When slowing to a stop, my abs system kicks in and allows the vehicle to roll farther than normal, usually happens under 10 m. P. H.

Consumer applied the brakes, and the pedal went to the floor. Consumer was able to stop the vehicle by pumping the brakes consecutively three times. Then, vehicle stopped on its own. Consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer, but mechanic could not duplicate the problem. Consumer informed the mechanic that this problem occurred more than once.

Brakes would not work. Experienced extreme difficulty in braking vehicle. In order to stop vehicle, had to apply pressure with both feet.

Car accelerated to 70mph when I when to downshift to get off a major highway ramp. I pressed on the brake and lost my brakes. I turned off the key to stop. I was traveling on a major highway in maryland and at that time of day traffic was light. I could have caused a major accident due to this acceleration problem and killed someone or been killed myself. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed now!!!!!!!.

While traveling on highway, without prior warning, brake pedal went all the down to the floor. Dealership was aware of problem. At 10-15 mph on wet road the brakes locked up and the vehicle skidded colliding with another vehicle. There were no injuries.

Consumer states when applying brakes, abs has a thumping sound and there is long stopping distance. Dealer advised this was normal.

Driver complains of loud air sound when brake is applied. Also, when parked applying the brake makes the same sound as well as affecting the rev of the engine.

While driving about any mph stepped on the brake pedal to stop or reduce speed, but brakes would not work on dry or wet surface, causing extended stopping distance, and and resulting in an accident to consumer's wife.

Brakes routinely do not effectively stop. They "lock" give off a clicking sound, and the truck slides instead of stopping. It is my understanding that chevy Blazers "just do that. " the condition is unsafe and happens to me frequently not just on the date indicated or at the mileage reported. I have had the vehicle for 1 year now.

When applying brakes at slow speed 20mph while driving over bump, brake pedal goes to floor. This has happened a few times, dealer could not find problem.

Traveling 63mph approaching slowing/stopping traffic from a distance. Gradually began slowing vehicle and applying increased brake pressure. Traffic then stopped, applied heavy pressure-both feet on pedal, hands braced on wheel and body thrust back in the seat. Brake pedal was soft and to the floor and vehicle did not stop. Abs did not work - no "chk, chk, chk" sound and no pulsating. Resulted in rear end collision. Noticed that an abs recall exists for model of vehicle manufactured in same month/year (NHTSA campaign id#: 99v193000) but was told by Chevrolet that this vehicle is not included because it is a 1997 model.

Intermittently when the brakes are applied pedal goes to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealer has inspected the vehicle, and the manufacturer has been notified.

Problem with extended stopping distance; even as brakes were applied vehicle still continued to move before stopping. Believes this caused a collision. Asking help from NHTSA in this matter. Dealer been dragging out this problem long enough ,and somebody needs to do something.

Brake system is defective, and when brakes ar e applied extended stopping distance occurs. Travelling at 20 mph a frontal impact occurred, and airbag did not deploy. Dealer contacted, and repairwork not done on brakes. Problem still exists. Provide further information.

When applying the brakes during normal stopping abs system kicks in which increases the stopping distance an additional 15-20 feet. This happens on any type of road surface without warning. This condition caused a rear end crash. The truck was brought to the dealership a couple of times for abs problems. Several adjustments and repairs were made, but the problem continued. Please provide any further information.

When putting on brakes while on ice/ water/graval or anytime stepping on brakes pedal will go to floor, making a rumbling noise and vehicle will keep going.

In the month of February 1998, while driving in downtown portland, or, the brake pedal went completely to the floor while traveling down a slope and attempting to make a right hand turn. I had to continuously pump the pedal to regain any braking ability. *akwithin 5 minutes, this condition happened again. The weather was rainy and the streets were wet. I immediately took the vehicle to the dealership to determine what the problem might be. They could not determine why this occurred. Their service person did mention that it might have something to do with the abs system acting up. I fear that this system is randomly defective and worry since my wife and soon to be driving daughter will be driving when this condition occurs. The dealership and Chevrolet in general is very unresponsive about this issue, yet they seem to know that something is wrong. Brake cable has not broken but is worn partially into in front of rear left wheel at bracket support.

When driving in rain and applying the brakes vehicle slides, and the abs system is working intermittently.

Consumer has been experiencing continuous problem with abs brake system. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop. Less then seven months later condition reappeared. Consumer called dealer on several occasions and left a massage. It appears that dealer does not want to return consumer's calls.

Abs seemed to engage very easily on vehicle, resulting in overly long stops. Vehicle was unable to stop at stop sign resulting in total loss of vehicle.

Anti-lock braking system is defective. While driving on snow gently pressed on brake pedal to slow down, and t brakes locked up, sending vehicle in a spin. Brakes were real soft, then became hard. There was a car accident when running into a sign. Has not contacted the dealer yet.

Brakes squeaked when pedal was or was not applied. Extended stopping distance occurred. Dealer aware of problem. Repair work done at owners expense.

On regular road conditions when applying the brakes the truck skidded 54 feet before stopping, causing truck to rear end vehicle stopped at a red light. The truck front bumper has been repaired.

When applied the abs brakes the truck slides. But this only happens when it is wet outside on the road. Consumer thinks that it could be the tire or the abs brakes.

Abs brakes are inadequate due to poor design.
