Chevrolet C1500 owners have reported 23 problems related to hydraulic power assist steering system (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving at most any speed and making a slight right hand turn, the power steering will hesitate then jerk to the right, requiring the driver to sometimes over compensate the steering to to left. At this time the problem hasn't been bad enough to cause an accident, but is getting worse. This has happened hundreds of times over the past year. I haven't fixed the problem since I can't afford the repair cost.

'97 Chevrolet C1500 pickup steering "slips" and then grabs again. This sometimes causes slight to moderate lane changes unexpectedly. This has been ongoing since I purchased the vehicle, but dealership is at a loss as to how to repair it. Why doesn't gm recall these vehicles?.

My vehicle's power steering will overcompensate for curves causing an unsafe loss of steering. Happens at all speeds and both directions.
We are a used auto dealer in north carolina. We sell several Chevrolet trucks; mainly 4wd pick-ups, tahoes and suburbans we have in the last three years replaced steering speed control units, not sure of exact part name. The problem we have noticed is at between 20 to 40 mph in a curve usually to the left the and keeping constant and consistant pressure on the steering wheel the vehicle will abruptly turn deeper into the curve. We have replaced several of these units at our expense both for vehicles in inventory and previously sold vehicles. When the steering input pressure changes that rapidly an unsuspecting driver is forced from his lane of traffic. The dealers in our area are very aware of this problem and have plenty of replacement parts in stock. To my knowledge this is affecting 1997 and 1998 models.
Variableration power steering is giving consumer some problems, and he almost had an accident. Consumer was travling at 40-50 mph and when changing lanes steering went out. Problem with the steering is that wheel gets too loose when slowing down, and wheel turns more the it should.
When turning to right or left, steering wheel slips for a second leaving you with no control over vehicle, this is a very dangerous problem. No fix yet?.
The following is a brief synopsis of my safety defect: this pickup has recently demonstrated the characteristic of not being able to turn the front wheels of the vehicle with the power steering system when at a stop and on occasion at low speeds such as in a parking lot. I consider this abnormality to be a serious safety defect in the steering system of the vehicle. To date, this vehicle has been to parkway Chevrolet in deer park, wa on four separate occasions in attempts to resolve this probem. Thus far the problem has not been corrected. The final road test the dealer service shop foreman demonstrated the continuation of the problem. This fact is documented on the last service repair order. The shop foreman and the service manager, kelly connelly, informed me that the gm technical assistance people considers this abnormality as "normal" as they have performed their prescribed tests, the results showing "normal" conditions and after all, "the problem seems to only occur when not rolling"! therefore, they said that they will not authorize any further warranty work. I contend that gm needs to develop further tests to isolate the source of this problem which only began occuring after approximately 30,000 miles of driving. I have serious concerns about the safety of driving a vehicle which has demonstrated a problem in the computer controlled power steering system. At this point, Chevrolet seems to know that a problem exists but are unwilling to provide any further warranty work on my vehicle. I believe that the NHTSA should be informed of this safety defect. Chevrolet is apparently unwilling to provide a solution or repair to the problem. Please feel free to contact me for further information. For your reference, the customer assistance file #0003658437 and the tech case is #365437 should Chevrolet be willing to let you review these documents. Very truly yours, dean weber.

Steering was hard to turn in forward and backward moneuvers.
While driving at any speed andwhen changing lanes or turning a corner, steering seems to get very loose. Owner has tried to report this problem to the dealership. Please provide any further information.
Power steering is very erratic (over steering, stiff, and veers) at times when speeds are 50-60 mph. Mjs.
Power steering tends to over-boost under certain conditions. It appears to manifest when the engine is lightly loaded making a slow arcing turn without applying the power assisted brakes. If the brakes are applied, the problem is less prevalent.
When changing lanes or turning, steering pulls with a quick motion.
While driving the power steering takes control of the vehicle. The dealer replaced the steering system and there is still a problem. Consumer staes steering jerks to the left on its own, it never pulls hard and stays it is a stutter pull or a sudden jerk, componets of the steering have been replaced twice.
Steering - at times when stopped, there is no power assist; at times while moving at any speed, there will be way too much power assist causing vehicles to change lanes/run off road rapidly. (this is dangerous) --- heater blower motor makes intermitent ticking noise --- neither problem has been fixed by dealer; dealer says all like models do it; dealer says they have contacted manufacturer and there is no fix.
Power steering will go from power assist to full power with no steering wheel feeling and the vehicle over steers.
Power steering leak/noise.

Vehicle has erratic steering. The steering wheel unexpectedly twitches or jerks going down the road. It is more prevalent with just normal driving (steering down a road).
Common problem with steering, I. E. Wandering while 35mph or higher, steering wheel resistance changes during turns, vehicle wants to resist steering inputs.
Power steering continually over corrects/assists. The steering will suddenly jump during turns. I have experienced this numerous times. The steering feels as though it is trying to over assist during turns (both gradual and tight turns).
I am having the same steering problem that I have just heard about in the news. Many times, when I am travelling above 35 mph, on a small right steering movement the truck seems to take off to the right. Seems to be happening with increasing frequency.
Consumer complained about a steering problem. While driving at highway speeds steering jerked from one side to the other.
While driving, steering seems to over react. While going around a curve, wheel seem to cut very hard with out turning steering whewl drastically.
Intermittent steering problems vehicle suddenly oversteers while turning at road speeds.
