I was driving on the highway at about 65 mph when my car unexpectedly increased it's speed to about 80-90 mph. I initially thought the car accidentally some kind of way made cruise control come on. I am not a fan of cruise control so I wouldn't have turned it on. After the acceleration, I quickly attempted to get my car back down to normal driving speed because I was on the highway and did not want to crash with anyone by accident. I quickly stomped my foot on the brake. This did not help at all. Matter of fact, my brakes locked up too. I couldn't control the brakes nor the gas. The gas continued to accelerate. At this point, I am doing about 100 mph. I thought quickly and maneuvered my way out of traffic. I almost hit several cars but there was some type of protection around me because I didn't even have a single scratch on me or the car. The car continued to accelerate despite my several attempts to slow down. I was able to gain a little control of the car by putting the emergency brake up and placing the car in neutral. This only slowed the car down to about 80 mph. I had to turn the switch off the stop the car. I attempted to crank the car but the engine only revved up and made my car smoke. This was a very dangerous situation that was out of my control. I almost lost my life and may have been the cause of death for innocent families on the road. I know I am not the only person that has unexpectedly had this to happen.

First driver side rear turn signal blinked rapidly, then brake light and turn light ceased to work. When checked, the light and lens were fused (melted) together. As well driver side window ceased to work. Mechanic stated its electrical and advised I check recalls. Also sometimes gas pedal accelerates without pressure from me. No cruise control engaged, not able to determine when or why. . . Just occasionally happens.

I drove my 02 chevy Cavalier on Thursday back from tahoe,CA and my gas pedal got stuck down and kept increasing in speed, so I prayed and then started to mess with my cruise control and finally came back up, this morning same thing happened, so I called Chevrolet customer service and the rep-eric told me that I need to pay for a diagnoses before I can get any answers, he called up the closest dealer and they could not give him a quote, I would rather buy a new car if I have to pay money for a diagnoses. This incident is a mechanical problem which occurs on its own. I cant afford another car as of right now and am still using my car for work. What would you say I should do??.

Several times since purchasing this car in 2009, the cruise control would shut off without warning at highway speeds from 55 to 70. Still does this on occasion.

Cruise control stayed on after hitting breaks even tried swtiching it off and that did not work only when I pressed in on the clutch did it disengage. But not befor the engine reved up to over 5000 rpm. This could damage the engine.
The contact stated h the cruise control malfunctioned. While traveling at 45 mph he turned on the cruise control switch and the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 60 mph. The contact tried to disengage the cruise control several times by depressing the brake pedal which should manually turn off the cruise control switch. However, these attempts were unsuccessful. As a result, he turned the ignition off, and coasted to the side of the road. When he restarted the vehicle the engine revved high. He turned off the ignition and the vehicle was towed home. Afterwards, he pulled the fuse and deactivated the cruise control. No further repairs have been made.

The contact experienced sudden unwanted acceleration. The contact was trying to park when the vehicle accelerated and crashed into another vehicle. The vehicle was repaired by a service dealer that did not tell her the cause. She believed the problem was caused by the cruise control. Updated 11/30/05.

While traveling on interstate I-75 at approx 75-78 mph with my car's cruise control set, I changed lanes to go around a slower vehicle at which time I was also coming up to a vehicle in the lane I switched to so when I tapped my brake pedal to release the cruise control it did not disengage, so I rapidly starting pushing the button on the end of the cruise control mechanism which did not slow me down either-I turned the button of on the cruise control it did not shut off! I got over into the slow lane to prepare to exit the x-way by literally standing on my brake pedal and I could only get it down to about 58 mph with my rpm's still at over 3000 when I exited I got the front end of the car to the shoulder I was going to fast still to properly place the car and I decided I needed to put it into neutral and shut it off, I missed neutral and went into reverse at 58-60 mph it jolted us backwards I quick reached down and put it back into drive and we flew forward and at that point I crammed the gear shift into park at 60 mph- my engine was roaring and you could smell nothing but burning. My father drove to where we were and since he is retired g. M. Repair person he knew how to disconnect the cruise control cable and he had me follow him and said everything seemed ok- I now have gotten the car to team hodges Chevrolet where it was purchased for them to inspect and a report has been made to Chevrolet.
While driving vehicle accelerates without throttle application. The vehicle acts as though it is in cruise, but the cruise control is turned off. Driver has to put vehicle in neutral to get it to stop. Applying the brakes does not help. Dealer is not able to duplicate problem. Vehicle has been to the dealer at least three times for this reason.
