1 Underbody Shield problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 07/17/2012

Engine cradle subframe has rusted through on right side. Low mileage, car is parked in a garage, so it does not sit outside all day and night. My mechanic tells me he has seen this a lot with chevys. He says it is especially true with gm cars driven in the north because of the weather. . . So much for being imported from detroit; isn't that in the north? he says he can order a used replacement from the southern us. I know a Cavalier is not a top-of-the-line car, but isn't the frame supposed to be the strogest part? come on gm, fix this issue before somebody dies! I was going to let my 16 year old kid drive the car, now I have to tell him that he can't because an affordable car made by the biggest us automaker is cheaply made and unsafe!?.

2 Underbody Shield problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 11/30/2007

The sub-frame on the passenger side of my vehicle was almost completely rusted through along with the brake line on that side. The air conditioning overflow tube was releasing water onto that piece of metal. Although we do not know for sure if this was the cause the drivers side is not like that. Could have just been cheap metal. On Nov 30 of 07 I was driving my car to work and it just did not feel right. When you drive a car everyday you notice these things but cannot put your finger on it. The next day I went to the grocery store and the suspension felt very loose through the steering wheel and it felt like it was not turning correctly. The more I drove the worse it got. On the way home I drove only 20 miles an hour with my hazard lights on praying I would get home without incident or accident. It felt like the whole front end was going to fall off. Thank the good lord I did get home alright. My husband pulled of both wheels starting with left and then right and discovered the problem. We took pictures and called a tow truck to take it to our preferred auto shop. Both the tow truck driver and the guy at the shop said we were very lucky that nothing bad happened that we actually could have lost the front end. In all the cars that we have owned nothing like this has ever happened although this is the first and only chevy we have had.

5 Underbody Shield problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 05/23/2003

I purchased my car with 2 miles on it in may 2003. After 2 weeks of having it there was a knocking noise that started under the front end. The service dept. Said that it was just a new car sound and it would go away. After several months I took it back to the service dept. And he found that there were many bolts to the front end frame were never tightened or put in from the factory. So they put in bolts and tightened the rest. Hoping that would solve the problem I left. It continued to make a popping type sound and I took it back where this time they heard it but could not find what it was. To this day it sounds as though the front end is going to fall out and the steering has changed. The service dept. Said if they can't find the problem then they can't fix it and to drive it until whatever it is breaks or falls out! I still have the problem and I am terrified to drive it. Also the seat belt light does not work properly, the dash has a loud vibrating noise, the heat and air makes a loud buzzing sound, the gas gauge does not work properly and the car does not accelerate and decelerate properly. I have contacted the manufacturer about the problem and they said they were sorry about the bolts never being put in and that their vehicles are inspected and are safe. Well how is that when they did not even put in bolts that holds the motor in?what else have they forgotten?I feel unsafe in my car and am very angry that this problem persists!.
