The check engine light also stays on as well at the same time the traction control system light is on, so not sure if these two issues are related. For no apparent reason and without any warning (no check engine light or anything), I received an "engine power reduced" warning and my car's engine completely shut down while I was completing a turn in a busy intersection. Luckily, I was able to coast to safety and park in a nearby parking lot. The car refused to turn back on for several minutes. Once it did, I drove my car to my office and was able to start it and drive it without further incident for several weeks. Then, without warning it happened again while I was on the freeway and has been happening intermittently since then. When I took it to the dealership, they claimed they are not aware of other people having this problem, but I have found numerous complaints and reports from other owners online, so I'm not convinced of their honesty or concern regarding this matter. They say they *think* the problem might be the master computer or at least that is their "best guess" (their words, not mine). I will be replacing it later this week. Unfortunately, I'm not confident the repair will fix the problem. After gm's repeated and explicit denial of the power steering problem and how long it took them to admit there even was one, I have decided to appeal to you. At present, when driving this car, I am a danger to myself and everyone else who might be around me on the road. . . As are all other Cobalt drivers. Please, investigate this matter before someone has this happen at the wrong place and the wrong time and someone gets seriously hurt, or worse. Gm knows it created a car with a faulty electrical system which could result in catastrophic failures and they need to take responsibility for it and fix it. Just because they stopped making the car, does not absolve their responsibility to make them safe for everyone on the road.
2005 chevy Cobalt, while my daughter was driving this car, she lost power, motor was revving, rpm going up, then engine light came on. Took to 2 chevy dealerships, 12 codes came up, but was told none would make it do "that". . . Help!! what if she is on highway and loses power, someone can be killed. . .
The check engine light came on so I took the vehicle straight to the dealership. They said it was a history code and not a big deal, so they reset it. After leaving the dealership it came back on so I went to a different dealership. They said the same thing and said they don't know why it is coming back on.
: the contact stated while driving at various speeds the check engine light illuminated and fire came from the exhaust pipe. The exhaust turns bright red and the floor board gets hot. The dealership replaced the catalytic converter however the problem still exists.
We purchased a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt (LS) in December, 2005. Starting in January 2006, we noticed that the engine light goes on and off and we had the chevy dealer whom we purchased car from check it. They told us that the engine is fine and it happens to many Cobalt that the engine light will go on sometimes without any reason. We called Chevrolet and we were told that they were aware of the problem but have no solution to it. We were asked to keep driving the car with engine light on. We feel very uncomfortable driving a car with engine light on. We would not know if there is really nothing wrong with the car. Chevrolet refused to take any action regarding to this matter. We don't know where to seek further help on this incident. There is currently 6000 miles on the car and the engine may be fine at this moment. But since the engine light is not working properly, we would not know if something really happens in the future. We don't feel safe but nowhere to seek help.

The dealers still can't find the problem. Car runs rough and it may result in engine damage or other problems or safety problems if situation persists. To much air not enough fuel.
