On several prior occasions, the key would become stuck in the ignition. To solve this problem, I would simply shift from park to drive, cycling through the gears. This would allow the key to be removed from the ignition. I figured it was a small problem with the automatic gear shifter, it may not be fully engaging in park. This situation carried on for approximately two (2) years, whenever needed I would repeat the cycling of gears to disengage the key. However, a few days ago the key became stuck in the ignition and the previous solution would no longer dislodge the key. I found the switch under the steering wheel to remove the key, but the car is inoperable due to the key becoming stuck in the ignition cylinder on a constant basis. Upon doing some research, I have come to the conclusion that is a common problem with automatic transmission equipped Cobalts. The shifter is not fully engaging a micro shifter when engaging in park, causing the key to remain in the ignition. It has come to the point where I can not remove the key, even while using the switch under the steering wheel.

2005 chevy Cobalt: the key continuously gets stuck in the ignition and does not release. It requires numerous attempts and time to either turn the car back on and try again or work the shift lever release until the key is released. It is very frustrating and several times I had to leave the key in the ignition because I was in a hurry to get to work and prevent from being late. I am also concerned that this may be related to other problems that could cause a safety issue.
The key is stuck in the ignition.
At roughly 40,000 miles and 3â½ years of ownership, a problem with the shift lock on the car was observed. At first, the problem was limited to the key being stuck in the ignition even when the car was in park. After ejecting the key with the button on the bottom side of the steering column, the shifter would remain in park. Eventually, the problem escalated to the point that the shifter could be moved from park to other gears without the key in the ignition. The car was taken to a dealership, but the problem could not be reproduced at the time. A few months passed after the escalated problem was first observed where the shifter behaved as intended or in the manner where the key would need ejected but the shifter would remain in park. After a failure in power steering system resulted in the replacement of the entire steering column by the dealership, the car was returned to the owner with the gearshift button stuck "down. " since then, the key remains stuck in the ignition unless the ejection button is used and the shifter moves freely from park to any other gear even without a key in the ignition or a foot on the brake.
Power steering column and motor replaced for over 1,000 dollars also bushing. Engines stalls when pressing gas and brake pedal. Key wouldn't come out ignition and my car wouldn't stay in park. Had to pay a locksmith to remove the key. Headlights keep having to be adjusted. Wheel bearing and struts need to be replace but I don't have the money for all of these repairs for a 2005 vehicle. Its to many problems for such a newer vehicle. What is chevy going to do about this, how many more people have to die or get injured.
For about three months my key would get stuck in the ignition. I would have to play with the shifter by moving it back and forth to get the key to come out. Well about two weeks ago the shifter broke and I was not able to get the key out at all. I looked this problem up on the internet and to my surprise found it to be a very common problem with the Cobalt. I now have to push the release button to get my key out.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that every time the vehicle is turned off, the key will not come out of the ignition. It is extremely difficult to get the key out. After a few times of jiggling it the key it will finally come out. This has occurred a total of 5 times. The dealer has not been contacted about this failure. There have been no repairs done to the vehicle. The failure mileage was 49000 and current mileage is 49086. Updated 03/12/10. Updated 07/12/jb.
I own a 2005 chevy Cobalt. This vehicle is my families' only means of family transportation. Also, I have very serious medical conditions, including a very high risk pregnancy. The vehicle is my only means of traveling to my doctors and hospitals. At random times my car has shut off while driving, and locked the keys in the ignition. After restarting the vehicle it has trouble staying in drive, and starts to slip into neutral periodically. The problems usually occur while I am driving on the interstate. I have taken the vehicle to the chevy dealership in town on more than one occasion to have the issue fixed. They have changed items within the steering column and told me the problem is fixed. Yet, just today, the car shut off again. I cannot explain how important it is that I have a reliable mode of transportation to and from my doctors. I have explained that fact to the dealership, but still have the problem. If I am unable to make it to the doctor of hospital, my medical conditions can take my life, or my unborn child's. I need to have the problem fixed, before I go bankrupt paying for them to fix what they cannot seem to find.
Two months ago, when I put my car in park, I wasn't able to get my key out of the ignition. I'm worried that my car is going to roll down a hill and hit something or someone. Also two days ago, my power steering went out when I was driving on the interstate. Thankfully I was going straight when this happened. As soon as I turn off my car and turn it back on, the power steering is fine, but if I go a mile or two, all of a sudden it goes out. Very very unsafe especially since I have a 2 year old with me. This is very unsafe for everyone!!! both issues could resolve in a huge crash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nothing has been fixed because I have been reading on recalls and I hope I can get this fixed before someone gets injured!.
Electronic equipment in 2005 Cobalt that was going crazy while driving my car. All the testing at repair shops could not detect the problem but when I would drive, radio and front panel lights would go off and on; brake problems, and engine would cut out, even at high rates of spead, then die when car slowed. Replacing ignition cylinder and removing all electronic codes finally resolved the issue but was only a guess on part of many different repair people. Why should Toyota be the only one to take the blame for auto parts that aren't reliable?.
The shifter assembly on our 2005 chevy Cobalt broke. My husband was suddenly unable to fully disengage the shifter, so that the key could be taken out of the ignition and the car fully turned off. Because the key could not be taken out, it created a serious draw on the battery strength of the car and caused it to die. The next day my husband tried calling customer service at gm corporate, who refused to look at our problem (the second time this problem had occurred in our car in the 4 years/52,000 miles we had owned the car. They refused to help or even discuss our problem, not seeing it as an issue at all. They refused to recognize the research my husband found online of owners of the same make/model year and customer service was rude and refused us allowance to speak with a supervisor.

No events leading to failure. Chevy Cobalt 2005 model 33,000 miles power steering random catastrophic failure key sticks in ignition nothing was done to correct the failure by the manufacturer (no recall) even though multiple complaints and problems have been identified with the power steering in these models.
Ignition key sticks in the "acc" position at shut down about 80% of the time. Restarting the car or pushing up under the key cylinder sometimes releases it. I've gone to two dealers so far and all I get is yup its stuck. . . Maybe its the shifter maybe its the ignition. That's not a great response to hear. This is on 05 chevy Cobalt LS coupe.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. When the contact attempted to start the vehicle, the key became stuck inside of the ignition. The dealer advised the contact that the key cylinder needed to be replaced. There were no prior warnings and the current and failure mileages were 47000.
Key will not remove from ignition my daughter got stranded told was a very common problem with 2005 chevy Cobalt dealer said 500. 00 to fix should be recall for this problem.
2005 chevy Cobalt. . . The key gets stuck in the ignition. No matter what you do, it will not come out. I looked on line and I cannot get over how many people have problems with that and the compressor going out. Chevy needs to own up to their defects. I paid over $200 to have this fixed.
Key ignition locks up, can't get the key out, have to play and play with it until it unlocks, OH and the radio locks up periodically too.
Several times the ignition would not turn off without continuously cycling it several times. Also several times the ignition would not turn on without continuously taking the key out and putting it back in and retrying to turn it several times.
2005 Chevrolet Cobalt with only 10,000 miles has had repeated problems with ignition failing to start the car.
Power steering failure signal comes on after any length of time of driving, at any speed and on any pavement. The steering wheel locks up and the car has to be turned off and restarted in order for the steering to reset. Fuel injection failure. Key won't turn in ignition. Cd player picks and chooses when it will work.
Ignition key cannot be removed without using the release button in the hole under the column.
Key locked in ignition - unable to remove. Car would start but was in limp mode.
My 2005 chevy Cobalt has shut off 3 times while driving on the expressway. The car acts just like you turn off the ignition while you are in the driveway, except you are driving 70 mph and there is traffic all around you. When we pull over and park the car, the car starts right back up and drives fine. There have been no obvious warning signs indicating that something is going to happen. The first failure was when my wife was driving the car for about 45 minutes. She told me that the Cobalt turned off while she was driving and had to pull over and turn it back on. She was driving at 75 mph and did not have cruise control on. The second time I was driving the Cobalt with her as a passenger. We were driving at 75 mph for about 40 minutes when the car turned off. We made an appointment with the dealership and told them about it. The dealership replaced the defroster switch and updated the computer. The third time I was driving with my wife. We were driving at 75 mph with cruise on a really straight stretch of highway. I was not touching anything and was talking to my wife when the car turned off. I pulled over and immediately called the dealership. The dealership drove the car for 40-45 miles and checked the computer. They told us that they saw no codes and could not duplicate the problem. They gave us the gm customer service number and I them regarding this safety concern. Gm told me to take it to another dealership for them to look at it to see if they could duplicate the problem. This dealership only drove the car 8 miles and told us that they did not have time to spend driving the vehicle longer. I called gm again, the adm of the area passed on to us that, since the problem cannot be duplicated, the only things that we can do is to 1) attach a flight recorder to the vehicle and continue driving it in hopes that this problem continues and we can catch it with the flight recorder or 2) take a service man on a road trip to see if the problem duplicates.
The contact owned a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt coop. The contact was driving 25 mph over the train tracks when the vehicle shut off completely and coasted to the side of the road. The contact restarted the vehicle drove it to a dealer. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated that there was nothing wrong with it. Eight weeks later the contact was driving 45 mph and tried to switch lanes and the vehicle did not respond when he turned the steering wheel. The steering wheel and the vehicle eventually began to respond normally. The contact took it back to the dealer who was irate and stated that they would not fix the vehicle. The contact returned the vehicle to the dealer three months after he purchased it. The manufacturer was contacted in 2005 and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 3000. The current mileage was unknown. According to the invoice, the vehicle has a low torque ignition cylinder. Updated 09/21/10.
Dt:bought a new 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt in March. Since then it has been in the repair shop 5 times. While driving 40 mph dashboard panel lights came on and then suddenly the engine died. When this occurred the key was in the ignition in the start position. Dealer said it was designed for women so they may start the car easily. The ignition was designed to stop the engine if the key or ignition were touched while the vehicle was in motion. The dealer said Chevrolet designed it this way. The second opinion from the dealer was simply there was nothing wrong. When the engine shut down there was a loss of brake power along with everything electrical. They did a diagnostic check which showed nothing. There was a recall service performed on the vehicle, but that was on the air conditioner. There was some sort of reprogramming work done. Consumer did not know what was wrong with vehicle.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. The ignition shuts off while driving. This occurred several times at various speeds. Also, it occurred a couple of times while trying to tilt the steering wheel or while just driving and not trying to adjust the steering wheel. The dealership was as stunned as the consumer that gm will not do anything to correct this problem. The manufacturer said that one could put a slot in the key hole to make it smaller to correct the problem. This procedure has not been correctly done to consumer's vehicle it was just in the works to see if this would be a possibility to fix. The consumer has been having this problem since March 2005, and the vehicle was purchased in February 2005.
I have a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. Since I purchased the car December of 2004, I have been having problems with the key getting stuck in the ignition when I put the car in park and try to turn the engine off. I have to restart the car several times, turn the steering wheel, and move the gear shift from park to drive several times to release the key. This problem occurs several times a week. I am taking in my car for service tomorrow.
