1 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2019

I was driving the car and after parking it and getting out smelled a strong odor of gas. I didn't know where it was coming from so didn't think anything of it and drove the car a couple more times and each time after upon leaving the car smelled again a strong odor of gas. I decided to visually inspect the underside of the car and saw gas leaking from in front of the driver side rear tire. I quit driving the car and looked online to see if other people were having this same issue and there were. I called a couple chevy dealerships and asked if their was a recall and was told to bring it in and they would have to inspect it to determine if it was the fuel pump assembly and if so they would fix it for free. Knowing the car was unsafe and very dangerous to drive I rented a car dolly and brought it to a chevy dealership approximately 35 miles away. After inspection we were told it was not the fuel pump assembly but the gas lines. We had to pay $634 to have the car repaired. Repair was done in February 2020. The car had roughly 88,000 miles on it at the time problem noticed.

2 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

For the past few months a gaining smell of fuel has been smelled in the vehicle. It has been noticed that when driving, there is a "peeing" of gas out of my car from under the gas tank. It does not leak as bad while in park. After some initial diagnosing, there is a fuel system issue that has been recalled on many chevy Cobalts, but not mine. Below is the recall information: recall number 12v459000 recall date 09/19/2012 component fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump summary general motors (gm) is recalling certain model year 2007 Chevrolet equinox and pontiac torrent vehicles originally sold or currently registered in arizona, California, nevada, and texas; model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, pontiac g5, and Saturn ion vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, arizona, California, florida, nevada, or texas; model year 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and pontiac g5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, arizona; and model year 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and pontiac g5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, arkansas, arizona, California, nevada, oklahoma, or texas. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the plastic supply or return port on the fuel pump module may crack, which could cause a fuel leak. Consequence fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire. What owners should do gm will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 21, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles in for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact general motors at 1-800-521-7300.

Fuel pump leaking gas while driving and stationary.

5 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. While the vehicle was parked, it leaked fuel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was noticed that the plastic connection over the fuel pump was cracked and needed to be replaced. The failure caused a fuel leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall and referred him to NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

6 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2017

My Cobalt is not listed in the fuel pump-fuel line recalls that numerous others are listed in, yet, I've had the same problem! also, the fuel lines are rusting through at the metal clamp sites and leaking gas too! I believe this recall needs extended to cover all vehicles developing this problem!.

7 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 12/25/2017

2 fuel leaks required extensive & expensive work: #1: fuel line rusted completely in areas where clamps attached fuel line to car body along driver's side-front 2 back. #2- plastic 'l'-shaped pieces connecting fuel lines to fuel pump@gas tank developed cracks. Both issues caused fuel leaks while engine running creating extreme fire/explosion hazard-especially bcuz gas leaks were difficult to detect while car in motion except for some gas fumes. Gas puddles only occur if idling in 1 place - otherwise it was all 'blowback' while moving & had the fuel line not needed replaced the l-pieces cracks may of gone unnoticed until complete failure because fumes & leaks blow away while driving. . . We are lucky to not have exploded cuz we smoke &/or any spark could've caused a boom!.

8 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2017

Fuel leaking at fuel pump dripping onto hot exhaust.

9 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2017

Strong smell of gasoline in the vehicle and around it. Hesitation in starting vehicle. Took to have looked at and was told our fuel pump has a bad leak. Did research on line to find out other VIN 2007 chev. Colbalts also having this problem and most were covered by a recall. However, our is not! our daughter drives this car 2 hrs a day and it is such a fire hazard. How is this not included in the recall. This is a huge safety issue I'm sure you agree. The risk of fire from the gas leak and the large amount of chev Cobalts that have had this issue makes no sense you wouldn't cover the repairs. Please tell us the way to get this expensive repair taken care of. We insist you cover the defect! thank you in advance and prayers no one is seriously injured with this defect being such a problem for gm.

10 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2017

A strong gas odor was smelled inside the vehicle. When outside, the odor was strong from the rear end of the car. No visible leaks on the ground, but some gas was on the outside of the gaa tank. Like many other Cobalt owners, my dealer informed me that the fuel pump recall did not match my vehicle. This is a serious, life threatening situation. . . And its hard to believe I have to go this far to get chevy to fix it.

11 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

Fuel lines rusted near exhaust heat shield on driver's side of car. Two visible gas leaks from lines after fuel pump is engaged, and car is parked. No doubt the lines also leak gas while driving. Mechanic says moisture builds up in the heat shield and rusts out fuel lines. He says this is a common issue for Cobalts hhrs, and Saturn ions, but as far as I'm aware, there is no applicable recall or special coverage issued by gm for this fuel line issue.

12 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. While operating the vehicle, the odor of fuel was present inside the cabin of the vehicle. Upon inspection, it was discovered that fuel was leaking from under the driver's side door area. The vehicle was taken to alamo city Chevrolet in san antonio, texas and the contact was informed that the fuel tank, fuel pump, and fuel hoses would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 99,000.

13 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

There is a hazardous gas leak coming from myfuel pump system, yet I have never ran over anything that could cause this. I have smelled gas every day in the car since I purchased it. I know that my VIN number is only a few pages off of the fuel pump recall for 2007 chevy Cobalt. I know that my VIN number is only a few digits off of the fuel pump recall for 2007 chevy Cobalt. This is extremely dangerous and faulty.

14 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2017

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. While at a red light, the contact's vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle. The contact sustained a concussion, whiplash, and back injuries that required medical attention. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was not filed. After the crash, the contact smelled fuel fumes. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump module needed to be replaced, but it was not related to the previous crash. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

15 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that after turning the engine off, a fuel odor was present outside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was discovered that the fuel line connected to the fuel pump module was damaged causing fuel to leak out. The failure was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was previously repaired in April of 2010 under NHTSA campaign number: 09v419000 (fuel system). The failure mileage was 112,000.

16 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2016

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing fuel leakage. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the fuel pump failed and leaked fuel. The mechanic stated that the failure was dangerous and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was experiencing the same failure as listed in NHTSA campaign numbers: 09v419000 and 15v459000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 187,667.

17 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

My fuel pump needs to be replaced,. The issue is the same for the recall of 2007 chevy Cobalts, but was not sold/registered in the states listed. My car smells like gasoline and has trouble starting up.

18 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2015

We noticed a gas smell in the car, both on the road and stationary. The smell became more noticeable in late November, early December. My mechanic found a crack in the hose connection at the fuel pump. It broke off when he touched it. He replaced the fuel pump and hose lines.

19 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2015

I received a letter, #12191, from gm in March 2013 stating special cover of my 07 Chevrolet Cobalt lt for a condition "where the plastic supply or return port on the fuel pump cracks and leaks fuel or fuel vapors. Fuel vapors, in the presence of an ignition source, could potentially cause a vehicle fire. " at that time I was not experiencing the problem. However, on October 21, 2015 I started notice a powerful fuel odor from underneath the car when park after running. I remember the letter, #12191, that stated my car was covered, so I called the local Chevrolet dealer, jim trenary in troy, mo, and stated the problem and letter. The service technician stated they would raise the car up and check for fuel liquid leaking from the car. I told them that at this time only fuel vapors were leaking, and he said if that the case then it would not be fixed. This is in violation of the statement s in letter #12191. I also called the gm recall center and was told to just take it to dealer to tell me they wouldn't fix it. This resulted in me dropping the fuel tank, only to discover that indeed the supply line on the fuel pump was cracked. I order an ac delco mu 1970 direct oem replacement pump, and installed the unit. I contacted gm and they are refusing to cover the cost of the fuel pump. Basically gm is refusing to fix a special coverage of my car that could potentially lead to a fire that they said they would fix but are refusing to fix. I just wanted to make the NHTSA aware of what gm is not doing, which is fixing cars that could potential catch fire in presence of an ignition source. Their own words not mine.

20 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2015

My car started smelling like gas whenever I shut it off and I noticed it was leaking. Because I live in maryland my car isn't covered under the recall for a defective fuel pump. Current recall for the fuel pump in other states is #090226. Why is this recall only in certain states? does it take someone dying for this recall to be performed in other states before either gm steps up or the government steps up and does the right thing. I will never again buy anything Chevrolet or gm. They knowingly sold people cars that were piles of defective crap. Now I have a car that I don't drive and the trade in value is virtually non existent, and most car dealers won't give you a dime for these defective cars.

21 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that while driving at numerous speeds a strong fuel odor was behind the vehicle. The contact also stated that fuel leaked heavily from the rear of the vehicle while it was in motion . The check engine light was illuminated while the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel valve and the fuel pump was damaged and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made of the failure and also sent the contact additional information about the failure. However the contact stated that the dealer was refusing to do the repair due to the vehicle mileage being over 150,000 miles. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000. Ec.

22 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

Se light came on followed by strong gas odor in cabin and surrounding vehicle. Parked vehicle. Next day strong fuel odor surrounding vehicle. Investigation found gas leaking on ground under fuel tank. Took to mechanic who discovered both plastic supply and return ports on fuel pump cracked. Had to replace fuel pump. ($467). Research found 2 recalls for this problem 10/29/2009 and 9/19/2012 neither of which covered vehicles in north carolina. The 2012 recall did expand into nc and surrounding states but for 2006 model vehicles not 2007. Nhtsa # 12v459000 (09) and # 09v419000 (12) it is my contention gm should have included all states in these recalls or have a reimbursement plan in effect if this problem occurs in areas not covered. Two separate recalls for the same problem clearly indicates gm was aware of the cracking ports on the fuel pump. (I would appreciate a reimbursement) in a separate, yet very closely related issue, I now have a letter dated August 2015 about a cracked fuel tank control valve. Vehicles that have had tank removal procedures (replace fuel pump July) are "especially at risk" for this condition. Se light is back on, slight hint of gas fumes, and erratic engine performance especially after refueling. I now have to follow up on this gas tank issue.

23 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2015

A plastic component in the fuel return cracked causing a gas leak that was unrecognizable at first. First noticed the scent a week after adopting a cat and assumed it must have peed in the car or something. At first, only noticed it after driving more than a few minutes and parking the car. When the car was left in park overnight, it would not smell in the morning, however once it was driven any distance, the smell would become apparent by the time the trip was done. The smell was faint and seemed to come from the passenger side of the car, but was not strong enough to be narrowed down more than that. Eventually the scent was strong enough that it could be recognized as gasoline and by that time it was clear that it was coming from behind the passenger seat. Upon lifting the back end to look at the car, the underside was wet with gasoline and the source of the leak could be isolated to the top of the tank. Took it in to be checked and fixed to find out it was a crack in a plastic component of the fuel return and the way the component is designed, the entire fuel pump had to be replaced. Received a notice from gm about potential fuel leaks and submitted my information only to learn that the current bulletin pertains to the fuel tank itself and all other service bulletins related to this particular issue are for different car batches sold mostly to warmer climate states so gm will not reimburse for the repair.

24 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2015

In June 2015, we smelled fuel under car. The next day we took the car immediately to our mechanic who replaced the fuel pump at a cost of $531. 85. In August of 2015, we received a letter from Chevrolet that indicated our Cobalt may have a cracked fuel tank inlet control valve. The letter said that the vehicle may emit a strong fuel odor from the rear of the vehicle which is what we detected. The letter indicated we could be reimbursed if we submitted the requested documents if we already had the vehicle repaired. I submitted all documents to our local Chevrolet dealer but was denied reimbursement.

25 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving approximately 40 mph, there was a fuel odor emitting into the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 124,657.

26 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2015

I smelt gas very strongly and was coming out of top of gas tank. I took it to weeks tires,1883 hickman Ave, elba, alabama,36323. . . (334)897-2270. Upon taking it to them I was shown the hole in the fuel line on the fuel pump. I have noticed the recalls on this vehicle in other states. I had to pay $543. 70 for parts and labor.

27 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2015

My car had smelled of gasoline for approximately 1 week. I had the vehicle serviced and I had to replace my fuel pump moduel assembly. It had leaking and cracked lines. I have researched online and discovered recalls for this same year make and model vehicle and was never notified of any possible problem. This is a major safety issue and could have resulted in a catastrophe for my family. I have contacted gm and I am trying to get reimbursed for the repairs to my vehicle.

28 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2015

I noticed a strong gas odor. When I looked under the car, it was dripping gasoline onto the muffler heat shield and onto the pavement. I looked on the NHTSA website and see that certain chevy Cobalts are under recall for a problem with the fuel pump cracking and leaking. My car is experiencing the same problem as the ones under recall, the fuel pump cracked causing the leak. When I contacted general motors, I was told sorry your VIN # is not under recall. I am not happy that my car has the same problem as the recalled cars but I am stuck paying the bill for a new fuel pump. This vehicle should be recalled along with the rest.

29 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2015

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving at unknown speeds, fuel fumes emitted into the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and it was determined that the fuel pump module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 12v459000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 119,000.

30 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2014

My Chevrolet Cobalt 2007 was called for a recall, even though my car was running perfectly I decided to take it to the closest Chevrolet dealership to me. At the dealership they changed the power steering wheel, the ignition and all that had to do with it, and to my surprise they also changed the fuel pump. When I received my car from the dealer I noticed a fuel odor coming from my car, I did not pay attention to it because I thought it was normal since they changed the fuel pump. After a couple of days I took my car back since I noticed a big gas leak on the driveway when I moved my car. The dealership checked the car and said it had nothing to do with the recall and that the filler neck was cracked, and that I might have possibly hit my car and cracked the filler neck. I was very frustrated and I talked to managers and everything, but the only response I got was that they will not cover it and that I will have to pay for it. After calling general motors and Chevrolet, they told me that I had to pay $500 dollars for the repair and that they will cover the rest. I was very upset and frustrated, but I am a college student and I work, so I needed my car. I paid the $500 dollars out of credit cards because I did not have the money for a mistake that they made and people at the dealership even told me they did because they said that the filler neck is plastic and that with the weather changes in houston when "handled" can crack easily. I thought it was a total fraud and I want my $500 dollars back and also the fee they charged to check it which was almost $85 dollars.

31 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

Daughter drives vehicle to college. Smelling gas and noticed drops underneath car. Per mechanic it looked like coming from fuel pump and was told to take to dealer for extended safety bulletin 09226, cracked plastic supply port fuel pump. Dealer states that is not it and it is the filler neck of fuel tank. Needs to be replace )its plastic???!!!) $1500. This car is getting out of control expensive and this problems is also a well known issue that is not addressed by gm. Online there are scores of people with same issue. A fuel tank should not break, period. Car is worthless to sell after ignition recall anyway.

32 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2014

I was driving in town and suddenly lost all power. I had to use the momentum of the car to move over 2 lanes of traffic in order to get pulled to the side of the road. Had it towed to the mechanic and found out that both the fuel pump and the electrical panel under my fuse box had gone out. This cost me over $1800. 00 to have fixed and the mechanic states gm was aware of the fuse box issue and to watch for a recall. Also the fuel pump was a specialty that was not placed in most cars of this year/model and had to be ordered from the factory. The problems that are happening with these cars are ridiculous. Gm should have to pay the owners to have the entire car replaced.

33 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2014

Noticed smell of leaking fuel. Checked recall site for Chevrolet and called Chevrolet recall telephone number but was told it was not under recall but under "special warranty". Took to dealer and was told that fuel pump was under "special warranty" but the tank was also leaking and this was not covered under the warranty. This is a safety issue that I strongly feel that not only should the fuel pump be covered, but also the tank itself.

34 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2014

My 2007 Cobalt started to smell like fuel the past few months at first outside then strong on inside. My father looked under the car, and noticed around where the fuel pump is located fuel was spilling over and was also in the tray under gas tank. We called a dealer and he said that their is a recall , but our state indiana was not included. How can this be , this is a fire hazard, and possible death trap. If you acknowledge a defect it should be every where. Indian has had extremely hot weather over the last several years.

35 Other Fuel System Pump problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2014

Fuel leak at fuel pump module - see below my e-mail to gm, dealer is holding my car until payment. I have a 2007 chevy Cobalt with the fuel leak coming from the top of the tank, running down to the bottom of the tank - I can smell gas when exiting or walking past the car - VIN # 1g1ak55f877213930 thanks, john dhuman 347-672-7538 - cell phone # today at 4:56 pm I haven't gotten a reply on my inquire. I spoke to a gm customer service and they told me to take the car to chevy dealer and if it is the fuel pump module that is leaking, they would talk to the dealer. I received a call from the dealer that I need to pay $250. 00 for the car - why? and I never gave them authorization to repair and I will make payment. The dealer is holding my car for payment. I need my care, currently I am using a rental car, which I intend to put in a claim to gm. Please advice. John paul dhuman.
