The steering gives out on my 2007 chevy Cobalt and there is play in the steering when it does work as well as popping and rattling noises. This happens when the vehicle is in motion when turning either left or right.

41 Steering problem

The steering makes popping and rattling noises when turning either direction when vehicle is in motion or when sitting stationary. This is a very dangerous known issue with the chevy Cobalt and I have lost control of my vehicle as a result of these issues went off the road into the ditch and barley avoided a head on collision.

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2018

It starting having flashing dashboard lights once as I was driving it just a few blocks from my home the first time it happened all gauges go everywhere up down or stop it looks like a christmas tree! and before the gear shift had some clicking at times. The clicking started then the gauges started going all over and the speed was all over then dropped to 0 not to move again. It's been happening on and off for about 8 years but as time goes on it's getting really bad I've kept looking for recalls as did my mother as she had the car before my owning it. It now does this anytime and the steering stops working with no notice or if it's not working and trying to pull over as it did on an on-ramp it kicked on and made the car jump into side lane about half way into that lane. Had it been a two lane road and a car coming towards me it would have been a dead head head on collision as it takes time and a lot of power to move the car when the steering is like a 1950 tractor in a wet field! I have back issues and don't have the upper arm strength that it really needs. There in no real warning when it's going to happen. But sometimes I hear a click and it happens a few seconds later. Also the interior lights every one through inside of the car stopped working about 3 months when my parents bought the car used back in June 08 they have never worked since. It had like 23,000 miles on it roughly. They was in middle 60s back then. It's now a family car and it's scary to have to drive it but I've got money in it I can't afford a replacement now. I have video of what it does. I just have videos no pictures.

Yesterday, my fiance's son attempted to drive his car. Upon cranking the car and putting it in gear to back out of the driveway, he discovered that his power steering was inoperable. After a few moments. It began operating again. I am concerned that driving his vehicle with the possibility of this happening is clearly unsafe. 56 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2017

On 11/04/2017 at approximately 3:00 pm I returned to my car (in parking lot) after work to go home. I started car and "power steering" appeared on display. I could only turn my steering wheel but 1/2 an inch. I panicked and called to have my car towed to closest auto part store to my house. It was there that I found out that my car does not take fluid; but is electrical? an associate of auto part store looked up how to replace it; if they could even do so and then found that similar problems were reported of total lock-up of wheel (problems with power steering). A website was recommended to look up VIN # to see if power steering was recalled. Of course local chevy dealers are not available on weekends, so I must wait until Monday (Nov. 6th 2017). I have orientation on this day (early in the morning) and cannot take my car in. I do hope my wheel does not freeze up on the freeway! I must note that when I started car up again from auto store that it did not display the words "power steering" and it drove the same except for the fact that it hiccuped a bit before starting. I am afraid to drive anywhere now for fear of the steering freezing up.

61 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2017

Electric power steering my vehicle was first affected by loss of power steering when I was attempting to make a left turn from my driveway. I wasn't expecting I would have a hard time and take too long to turn the wheel and I almost got hit by oncoming traffic. It was like that for awhile and then my steering went back to normal. I took my car to my mechanic and was informed that the power steering module and motor will need replaced. They told me to go to a Chevrolet dealer to get a power steering recall replacement done. The Chevrolet dealer informed me that the recall replacement had already been done in 2010. My mechanic and my own research has led me to believe that these parts should be good for the life of the car or at least not be needing replaced again so soon. There have been approximately 46,000 miles put on this car since the recall was done and this just seems ridiculous to me that it would need replaced again. And I have heard from other Cobalt owners that they have had this same problem. This is an expensive repair and poses a risk of injury if it is not fixed. If other people are having this problem I think it needs to be investigated.

62 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2017

My son bought a used 2007 chevy colbalt and the power steering goes out some time while he is driving, mostly in reverse for example: reversing out of that parking space or driveway. The wheel can be very hard to turn. I saw that there was a recall on it maybe two years ago, but I don't see a current recall for the steering. This has been happening every now and then since we bought the car two months ago. It just happened again 3-19-17. This car is not driven often right now until he gets his permanent license.

Takata recall !!! I am having problems with my 2007 chevy Cobalt. I called gm they stated the power steering has been replace June 26,2012. I have not taken the car in for that reason so how has it been replace. And if so why I am I having problems with it again. Then they told me the power steering was replace under my extended warranty. Which means the didn't pay for it my extended warranty did. They are not trying to help. The just stated. I was a recall and it has been replace. I asked for a signed document to show me proof that it had been replace and I not received anything as of today 3/8/2017. From the looks of all the articles on line I will not be getting any assistance from gm. Lives matter.

65 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2017

While driving, many times the steering wheel of the car becomes stiff and hard to turn. To bring the steering wheel back to its free-range motion, the ignition had to be shut off and turned back on the middle of the road. When it becomes stiff, there is a short bell and the light next to the speedometer reads "power steering". This issue has been occurring on and off. This first happened 1/15/17 and is still affecting the vehicle. Driving becomes very dangerous in situations such as highways and heavy- traffic areas. This problem occurs while the vehicle is in motion and while turning in both city streets and highways.
