1 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2018

Twice (10/6/18 and 10/21/18) while driving on the highway, the car has suddenly and completely lost power steering. I took it to a non-dealer who says there is a possible recall (10v073000), but when I called Chevrolet they said my car does not have any recalls. I don't know if my specific car wasn't part of the recall or if it was supposedly fixed before I bought it.

2 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

While I am driving anywhere, all of a sudden the safety lock feature comes on my dash board showing locked and then I lose power steering and all the other features go crazy on the panel, such as the gas, temp, air, ect. . . I then have to turn off the engine and restart it for it to reset itself but it continues to happen and more and more as time goes on and it's scarey because I lose my power steering and am afraid for my life or the life of others. I have had related recall work done it but it didn't last long and now no one wants to deal with it. Please see the attached history . My vehicle now has 92000 miles however the problem started at 59644 when the power steering motor was replaced. Maybe it's an electrical issue instead????.

3 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2016

I bought a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt for my sixteen year old daughter in 2012. She complained of the car losing power steering on occasion , but I did not know to what extent until I drove the car. The gauges would suddenly start fluctuating and the can would lose all power steering and the transmission acted as if it didn't want to shift. I took car to chevy dealership in morehead city n. C. And they kept the car for two weeks because they could not reproduce symptoms. I was charged for inspecting car, but car was not fixed. I contacted chevys maini headquarters and explained the situation. I informed represent I've that I did not feel safe with my daughter driving the car. She advised me not to drive the car. Problem is is that I still am making payments and insurance on vehicle my daughter ended up buying another car since then , do to this safety issue. I now have car, which I have had to drive for the last month and it is doing the same thing, yet more frequently. I again took car to dealership and he quickly diagnosed the car with having a bad battery. $200 later, I am now hopeful the car is finally fixed after years of dealing with it. No , I was wrong again. I am complete dissappointed in chevy for making such a worthless piece of junk and then not having the integrity to owe up to it's fault in developing a substaindured product. In the process of trying to find a solution or repair for this, I have come across hundreds if not thousands of complaints about the same issue. Is someone going to have to be killed before chevy owns up to its mistake and make it right for consumers. I am in the market for a new car, but after this experience I will not be buying a chevy product. I truly hope that the issue at hand will bring attention to the defects chevy is allowing. This is not just a car problem, this is peoples lives we are talking about.

4 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

We left the yard and got a quarter mile sown the road when the instrument panel went whacky and then immediately lost the power steering. I had this problem fixed back in 2012 and there was a recall on it. I can not believe this is happening again. I am so worried I'm going to get hurt or hurt someone else because I am unable to steer. Thank god my fiancé was with me so he could drive us back to the house.

5 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2014

Driving down a residential road at less than 30 miles per hour. All of a sudden without any warning, everything went haywire: I got a low fuel warning even though the tank was half-full, myriad warning lights flashed, the tachometer needle moved erratically, I lost power steering, and the automatic transmission started shifting very roughly. I pulled over and stopped the car, removed and reinserted the key, and restarted the car. The problem persisted. All without the car key attached to a key chain - gm's proposed solution until new parts can be installed for the recall. I drove the car a half-mile back to my home and shut it off. I restarted the car several minutes later and the problem was gone - the only lingering symptom was a check engine light. I drove it to the dealership that day. As yet (2 days later), they have been unable to recreate the problem. They say they're still unsure whether it's related to the recall. I registered my car for the recall over 3 weeks ago but the dealership hasn't received the replacement part yet. My latest information is they are looking for a spare replacement part because they think it will take another three weeks before the part for my car arrives (that's a 6-week wait-list for a replacement part known to cause fatal accidents).

7 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

I am very disappointed in gm's handling of the February 10 and April 10, 2014 recalls of 2008 Chevrolet Cobalts. I am a 2008 Cobalt owner, and I still have not received a letter nor has my uncle who is the registered owner. I bought the vehicle used but do not feel that is an adequate excuse for not being notified of this recall. I was not able to order the designated parts for repair until 3 days ago, as the dealership I contacted in regards to the problem did not get back to me. I do not feel that this recall is a situation to make light of. People are dying from this deficiency in the vehicle, and I was never even informed of the possibility of my air bags not deploying. I do not feel safe driving my car and I do not feel secure knowing that without my taking the initiative to investigate this problem, I would never have known that my car had been recalled. I also am not satisfied with the listing on the official gm letter on the NHTSA website that all ignition switches will be replaced, when the posted recall on cars. Com from gm states a problem with the ignition cylinder as well. I also feel that my air bags, steering and entire electrical system should be tested and replaced if there is even the slightest chance that they have be ineffective. I lose power steering if my ignition switch fails, in addition to my air bags failing, further compromising my safety. I am very concerned about these defects on my vehicle, as I have no other form of transportation back and forth to work etc. , and the length of time it is taking for it to be repaired. The dealership that ordered the parts for me told me it would be 6 weeks before the parts arrived, at which point I could make my appointment which may mean additional waiting. I, as a consumer, feel slighted and certainly disregarded. I will not recommend any gm sedan of this nature to anyone.

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt - power steering problem. Power steering light goes on, car loses power steering. Comes and goes. Never know when it is going to happen.

10 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2009

I bought a 2008 chevy Cobalt lt in April of 2009. At the time, it had 28,000 miles on it. As the car neared 40,000 miles it would occasionally lose its power steering capability, but restarting the car would bring back the power steering. As time went on, the problem became more and more frequent until about a month ago when the power steering went completely out. I called my dealer (1/26/10) to report the problem and they claimed to know nothing about it and offered no advice. I then took my car to my personal mechanic who discovered that gm had previously issued 2 service bulletins related to the problem. My mechanic called a different chevy dealer and found out that the repair (parts only) would run about $1200. I do not have that kind of money, and more importantly, I am concerned about the risk of hitting another car because of the inability to make proper turns, especially in parking situations. I am also quite sure that if I had to quickly swerve to avoid an obstacle, that would be nearly impossible. As well, I am experiencing increased shoulder pain from driving the car without any power steering. Part of my job involves transporting young adults, which I am not comfortable doing because of the safety liability. At this point, I am losing income, and endangering my health as well as the safety of passengers.
