43 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/30/2012

My daughter's car (2007 chevy Cobalt lt, titled in my name) developed a strong fuel odor. The waranty had recently expired in December. The dealership had recently made a warranty repair and a recall repair to the vehicle 11/2011, but was not open on a Saturday. A local shop identified the problem, and I called the dealership and gm to see if they would fix based on a recall for the exact same problem & model #, NHTSA # 09v419000. They refused based a nc salvage title on the car that was due to a replaced bumper, 3 years ago, which had no impact on the fuel system. Remember they had just done warranty work 2 months ago, but said the warranty had expired, although the gm rep said the warranty had been extended for 10 years for this problem as a part of a settlement, but said the salvage title did not warrant repair. When pushed about the previous work they had performed, the recall on record, and why did they not fix it when they fixed a steering recall; he called the dealership, they said it was because it was working fine and did not show the symptoms of the recall at the time. My exact same point!!! the salvage title/bumper had no impact to the fuel system for 3 years; and their (gm) responsibility in meeting a NHTSA recall. They are trying to use a loophole to avoid their responsibility on this recall. I had to pay $593 today so my daughter's car would not catch on fire as was mentioned on several internet websites in relation to this recall. Both gentlemen I spoke to were polite, but indicated it was not their fault because it did not show on their computer as an issue, and for them to react it had to show as a VIN # they could repair, even though, here was a car with the same year model make and recall with the same defective part in the exact same defective location, they were "powerless to help". 44 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

My mother in law has a 2008 chevy Cobalt and she has a strong smell of fuel in side the vehicle and she has to ride with the windows down, and cant take her grandchildren any where with me because of the smell. Also her fuel mileage has dropped considerably she only put $10 worth the gas in at a time because she am in fear of what will happen if she fills it up.

45 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

I would like to file a complaint. My car is leaking gas excessively. I looked up the recall information and chevy is only doing recalls in certain states! I drive my car correctly & now I am stuck with a car that starts correctly after trying twice, plus I'm blowing through gas way too fast! why should only certain states get their car fixed. If this problem isn't resolved I will contact the bbb and I will never buy a chevy again. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

46 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

Our 2007 Cobalt LS is experiencing the exact below fuel system issue, but is not included as part of the recall due to where it was sold or registered is not in the states listed. The gas smell/fumes and visible leak when parked at an incline are extreme. We are terrified to drive it for fear it will explode or catch fire. It was purchased used in mid-2010 from a dealer who will not even look at it without charging a significant fee, let alone the cost of replacing whatever it is that needs replaced. Note - this vehicle is registered and titled in my mother-in-laws name. Summary = general motors is recalling certain model year 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn ion vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of arizona and nevada; and model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, pontiac g5 and Saturn ion vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of arizona, California, florida, nevada and texas. The plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly may crack. If either of these ports develops a crack, fuel will leak from the area. If the crack becomes large enough, fuel may be observed dripping onto the ground and vehicle performance may be affected.

47 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/14/2011

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that fuel emitted inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and was awaiting diagnoses. The manufacturer had not been notified and the vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 33,950 and the current mileage was 34,000.

48 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

I started to smell gas when the car was parked in the garage and it is getting worse. The VIN is within the range of gm's recall notice number 09226, but when I called gm customer service line it does not fall within the exact VIN, even though it is exactly the same defect impacting the other vehicles that qualify for the recall. This is a safety issue and it is costing approximately $600 to $700 to fix. That is about 20- 30 percent of the total value of the vehicle. This could cause a fire and gm knows this isuse. They did provide me with a claim or complaint number. They need to include this in the recall before it is too late.

49 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/17/2011

Experienced strong fuel odor in and around vehicle after driving. Contacted dealer service department and scheduled appt to have vehicle inspected and repaired. Owner researched the issue and found vehicle recall 09226a. When vehicle went in for service, owner was advised by service rep that recall was not for the vehicle and charges would apply. VIN indicates it was in the VIN breakpoints but vehicle was not associated with any of the states identified (arizona, California, florida, nevada, and texas). Appears the gm and/or the service departments have misinterpreted the recall to mean both the VIN breakpoints and the affected states have to be valid for the recall to apply. Repair was done under warrenty. Owner never received recall notice which should have been sent to all vehicle owners with vins within the breakpoints with no consideration given to a particular state.

50 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/08/2011

I have 2008 chevy Cobalt and it only has 30,000 miles on it, bought it brand new from the dealer, lately I can smell gas burning. I took it to a service shop and they lifted it up and said it was leaking gas and they showed me. I looked online for recalls on this car and found it had a lots of recalls, even one that has the same problem mine has(leaking gas), but the years it has are between 2005-2007. I have 08, but I feel it is the same issue. I know the dealer is going to give me the runn around, but I feel they should fix this problem, so I dont have to pay them x amount of the dollars just to find the problem and then x2 amount of dollars the fix the problem.

51 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/03/2011

The odor of gasoline around the vehicle after it has been driven. The dealership says there is a fuel system problem and there is a recall on them, however my VIN is not under the recall list and I will have to pay out of pocket for it. The issues that are under the current recall for this car are what is wrong with my car, yet my car is not under the recall list.

52 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

53 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/02/2011

Fuel leak at rear of vehicle.

54 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

My Cobalt has a fuel leak which is clearly a safety issue, and being ignored by general motors except in certain states and vehicles with certain VIN numbers. Clearly they are trying to minimize their responsibility and are being aloud to do so at the expense of their customers. Since when is a fuel leak not a safety hazzard or maybe you are waiting for a fire or explosion and a loss of life before anything is done. Wonder why they stopped making Cobalts, maybe because they ran out of cheap defective parts. It is a real shame that those who purshased these vehicles are being treated like they are wanting something for free that they are not entitled to. I got the same old story from gm when I contacted them. They try to act concerned, but you can tell they are told what to say and aren't going to be of any help.

55 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

Fuel leaking from rear of vehicle. A special coverage adjustment #09275a that addresses this problem needs to have the state of virginia added to the list. We have several hundred of these cars and fear this may be the start of a major isssue.

56 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

Vehicle has various problems which started with the fuel gauge going to empty not matter how much fuel there was, this issue was never fixed properly. Front suspension rattles and lower control arm bushings are cracked, diagnosed, but not repaired by Chevrolet. Interior dome light has a short as does the radio ,intermittent. Also paint is peeling off of the door handles, radio and dashboard control buttons. And just recently there is an odor of gasoline coming from somewhere on the vehicle. The vehicle has a little over 21,000 miles on it.

57 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/02/2011

I took my 2006 Cobalt to a mechanic today to investigate a strong fuel odor that has persisted for about one week. I was also experiencing ignition delays. The mechanic confirmed a crack and in the fuel delivery system of my car. The mechanic instructed me to contact local Chevrolet dealers about a recall, referencing NHTSA recall bulletin 09v419000. Despite this information, no dealers confirmed the recall. The only recall available according to the dealers has to do with a power steering issue. I found information online in Chevrolet forums about another potential recall coded 06090 or 06090a that describes the same issue as the aforementioned NHTSA bulletin. My VIN number falls in the range listed with 06090. No dealers could confirm this either. I just want to know if my vehicle is eligible for recall related repairs. It seems as if it should be, judging by all the information I have gathered. Note: the mileage listed above is an estimate. The fuel odor has persisted since just before 69000 miles and still persists, as my current mileage is around 69,100.

58 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

60 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

My 2006 chevy Cobalt has developed the same fuel system crack/leak issues as discribed in the recall. However I do not live in any of the states listed so my dealer says its not covered. How can it be recalled in certain states and not others? seems to me a defect is a defect regardless of where the car is registered! now I have to pay for a repair or risk a fire.

61 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/30/2011

My husband and I purchased the vehicle in question in April 2007, at approx. 50,000 miles my car started to miss, then began to accelerate on its own and lunge as I was coming to a stop. We brought the car back to dealer where purchased, we were then sent on "wild goose chase," first we were told it was a fuel pedal sensor, nxt they replaced the computer, followed by the wiring harness, this however, did not fix the problem, we took it back for a fourth time and the ended up rebuilding the head on the motor, car has not ran correctly ever since. We tried to file a lemon law claim but needed four receipts to prove warranty work, we had three and after the fourth when picked up car the dealer would not release fourth, that was a year ago. My car now has 88,000 miles on it, it is beginning to idle rough again and when I put fuel in it, the car does not want to start, at first it will not do anything, and then it will try to turn over but will not start I then have to slam the fuel to it in order to get it started, once it starts it will idle rough and I have to keep giving it fuel in order for the idle to smooth. This is the worst vehicle I have ever owned, I will be hard pressed to ever buy another chevy!!!!!!!.

I have the bulletin in hand and it identifies the bracketed VIN numbers, and my VIN number falls within the bracket. Failure Date: 10/19/2010

We experienced the same problem described in NHTSA campaign number 09v419000 on our 2006 chevy Cobalt (VIN [xxx]). We smelled a strong fuel smell and took it to the dealer (sands Chevrolet glendale az) for repair under the recall. We were denied service under the recall even though the plastic supply port was cracked and leaking fuel as described in the recall. We were charged $673. 48 to repair the dangerous defect plus $134. 24 for another fuel filter they said we needed. Due to the potentially deadly defect we had no choice but to pay for the repair. If the dealer was telling the truth then it seems the scope of the recall needs to be expanded. Please look into this. We don't want to see drivers of the 2006 Cobalt exposed to this potentially deadly defect and fire hazard. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S.
