3 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/10/2011

I own a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, the power steering and traction control lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle then began to jerk and become difficult to drive. The vehicle had to be towed to an authorized dealer and repaired under NHTSA campaign id number 10v073000 (steering:electric power assist system); but the dealer told me that there no recall for my vehicle, apparently they was base on the vehicle VIN # instead of model/made/year of the car. The dealer told me I need to replace steering column which will cost me close to $1000 w/part, labor & taxes. Pickup my car on the same day late afternoon, was able to drive home with no incident. However, the failure recurred the next day, again towed the car back to the dealership, the manufacturer was aware of the failure. The vehicle was awaiting further inspection at the dealership, in the meantime I'm driving the rental that was provided by the dealership. This is mfg defected problem, I should not have to paid to fix the steering column.

4 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/30/2011

Randomly, chimes sound, gauges on instrument panel cycle to zero and back, power steering warning light, fuel low warning show, sometimes theft light comes on as does check engine light. Electrical assist to automatic transmission is lost resulting in hard shifts. Must manually shift into 1st gear when stopping to avoid engine stalling. Parking car seems to fix/allow car to reset. Has happened many times over past two years. Had mechanic look at it first time. Said every computer on the car had to be reset to the tune of $100. Reoccurred two days later. Fixed itself before taking it back in. Now I just live with the problem because I don't have the money to let these guys trouble shoot and fix things that are not the problem. Am having the power steering recall done tomorrow hoping that it would solve the problem but apparently it doesn't. Problem occurrence is totally random. Sometimes there is 6 months between episodes, sometimes weeks, days. It is really acting up after the heavy rains of irene.

12 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 02/12/2010

2005 chevy Cobalt power steering failure. We purchased this car a few months ago and it has begun to have major problems. The car is inside of the timeline for power train warranty, but is over miles. The power steering light comes on followed by complete power steering failure, engine stalling, rough shifting, strange movements of the speedometer needle, check engine light comes on. Power steering loss happens while driving and the engine has stalled while driving. The engine also stall when braking. This nearly caused an accident today and the situation is getting worse. My wife and I drive our 1 year old child in this car and my wife is pregnant. We cannot afford another vehicle and may not be able to repair this problem as numerous reports on the web indicate that this is a extremely common problem that is very expensive to fix. This problem happens several times each day.

13 Instrument Panel problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/30/2010

2009 chevy Cobalt LS, the odometer registers 1 mile, slightly before you actually drive 1 mile. I found this using mile markers on the highway after seeing major differences from older vehicles with analog odometers as I tried to measure miles I'd hit my stop watch running on the shoulder of the road. This makes the warranty expire I guess 3-4% sooner than it should and could quite possible !@#$%. Over the consumer whose not getting what they paid for. I wouldn't call this a safety issue but a sneaky way to screw their customer over. I just spoke to gm today about it but doubt anything will be done to resolve this. The car has about 17,000 miles on it which is really more like 16,500 or a little bit under and if something happens just after the mileage for warranty purposes, that's !@#$%. Over your customer. I know this is going on at least in my Cobalt and I find it interesting to hear today there are cases of power steering issues. I have yet to experience that thus far but will complain again is that comes up. Gm is !@#$%. It's customers over!!.

15 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/22/2009

My dad bought me a used 2005 Cobalt as my first car on may 2009 and power steering started to flash 2 days after I got the car. It went away, but it would come back on when it did, I felt the car some how pull or it felt heavy. I was driving out of my driveway when power steer flashed and the steering wheel was rock solid I couldn't turn, I freaked and left the car outside I called my dad, went back out and barely drove it in. My dad came home from work, I took him out to show him, but the car seemed normal. It felt like I was pulling a million pounds. I'm scared of driving it, that it's just parked in the driveway we got it used with 8,000 miles on it, so we have no warranty, and I certainly don't have $2,000 to fix it we need a recall. Now I'm driving it only to go 2 miles around my house!!! I often have to stop on the side of the road and re-start the car to unlock the steering wheel. By using this car, I am putting my life, and others in danger. Chevrolet has to do something about this, I thought that it was a simple fix, but when I found out how much it cost I can't do it. I don't think it's fare to us as customers to have a car we cant even drive. Now, the power steering dosn't work, the needle that tells you the speed doesn't work!!! we really need a recall from chevy!! my dad bought the car with light transmission noise problems. The transmission was replaced . I don't have trans problems but the power steer has been there 2 days from getting it.

17 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 04/26/2009

Powersteering and check engine light come on. There is then no powersteering and the car lurches forward as I accelerate. When stopping the car acts as though it is going to stall. The speedometer does not keep speed the needle just moves up and down. Took car in to chevy dealer while still under warranty but they said they could not find problem. The car continues to do this just about every day and now is no longer under warranty.

18 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

I own a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. Gm did replace the power steering motor, but I still do not have the power steering back. The service company told me that it was the power steering module that has gone bad and it is not covered by the recall or the warranty. It is causing my vehicle to jump and sputter. When this occurs I loose all my safety gauges like my speedometer, gas, etc. The vehicle even cuts off completely when I come to a stop at intersections. What do I do now? OH yeah, I even had the transmission worked to make sure it wasn't that either.

23 Instrument Panel problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/20/2007

Events that lead to failure: 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt randomly shut off, instrument gauge needles randomly flicker/twitch, bad smell that in my opinion resembled a burnt food/sulfur combination. It started out lightly and randomly for a few weeks, but became heavier and constant over a week. A knocking noise came from the rear of the car, idle surged, and cruise control failed to disengage. Failure & consequences: fire! component that failed was a canister/sending unit rear of the gas tank with the consequence of a fire and the total loss of my 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. The evening prior I contacted my local dealer about the smell and I told them I have no warning lights on. The next day driving to the dealership the smell/odder intensified. My thoughts were, we'll at least they can't say they don't smell it or give me the "can't duplicate it" decision. I only made it halfway when my car had a major electrical/mechanical failure. I was assisted by cars traveling behind me as one pointed out my car was on fire and the car shut down, all without any warning lights! the fire severely burned the entire back half of the car. After being inspected by a very well seasoned fire inspector the fire was diagnosed to come from a canister/sending unit malfunction. Again no warning lights gm! in my opinion the random shutting down of the car, the gauges twitching/flickering, the strange knocking noise and the smell/odder was all part of the same problem. Corrected failures: in reference to the fire, that will be up to gm however, after reading the NHTSA alarming number of 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt complaints and technical service bulletins one would be led to believe that there should be more than just a couple of recalls.

26 Instrument Panel problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/17/2006

When turning the headlights from the automatic to the manual position the dashboard instrumentation does not light up. This poses a safety hazard on cloudy / foggy days when the automatic sensor sensitivity is set to high to allow for proper lighting of the headlights and dash instrumentation. When the lights are switched to manual this should bypass the automatic sensor and allow for dashboard illumination however this is not the case.
