5 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

I purchased a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, at the end of August 09. Since then, it has been in the shop for knocking sounds in the front end that altered the brake from functioning properly over 4 times. The dealer could not always replicate it, therefore it was not fixed. Eventually the noise stopped, then a few months ago the key got stuck in the ignition several times, and finally the shifter had to be replaced. At this point I haven't even owned the vehicle for 5 months, and now a few days ago the power steering shut off in the middle of driving. I pulled over the best I could shut the vehicle off and restarted it. Everything reset and it was fine. Yesterday the event occurred on an exit ramp of a high way and nearly killed me. Once again its back in the shop. This car is a death trap, I'm lucky I was not killed. This is a serious problem and forums all over have people with the same problem. I bought this car because I believed it was safe, and now I'm terrified to drive it by any means. The dealerships aren't any help, they assure the problems are fixed when they really are not.

6 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

Problem started out of the blue. Traction control light comes on, power steering goes out, transmission shifts hard, clicking noise in gear shifter, gauges for speed and rpms bounce around, lights for e-brake and abs flash, and check engine light comes on. This can occur at any time. Sometimes it is as soon as you start the car. Other times it is while I am driving. Can not predict when it is coming. Surprisingly I have not got injured driving. I have learned to muscle the car when the steering goes out. I am afraid to drive my car but have no choice sometimes. It is the only car my family fits into. I feel I am putting us all at risk every time we get in it. I have taken it in several times, the first couple times they couldn't find anything. I got it to the dealer when the problem was happening. The only thing they could find was to replace a recalled transmission valve. It did nothing for the problem. It still happens when ever and stops pretty much the same. You do have to turn the car off. It can take one time or several times turning the car on and off. No one can seem to give me any answers. I really feel this problem needs to be solved. I bought the car in 2005. First incident in fall of 2007. Replaced valve in spring of 2009.

7 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/09/2009

While driving our 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt a loss of steering control has occurred over 3 times which includes erratic transmission and gearshift noises. If this had occurred on the highway in any of these occurrences a crash would have resulted. After conducting an online investigation there are thousands of owners of Cobalts which have the same problem with the electronic steering and other electrical problems within the steering column. Nothing has been done to correct the problem due to the dealer wanting to charge $2k. It is clearly a manufacturing defect with most dealers stating it is.

8 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 12/09/2008

Car has a hard yank after coming to a stop and starting off. Knocking noise coming from rear of car since day one of purchase. Vibration in accelirator and gear shifter. Lights on interior of car dashboard goes on and off. Problem still happening today and has had tsm replaced as well as they always say they cannot dupicate the problem. Check engine light has never came on at anytime the problem happened. It happens after car is driven and heated up. Only happened when long trip over 50 miles, now since ignition has been changed on call back. Problems has worsened lights on and off, transmissin hard shift when driving short trips as well as a constant vibration. Knocking coming from gas tank side of car was maily durung cooler weather now happened when day was above 90 degrees. Electrical problem with vehicle I think and has caused many problems and even deaths. Do not think it was keys ignition. I seriously think is is in the entire electrical system. Problem should of been fixed when 1st reported, but they only reset the trans computer.

9 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/30/2008

For the past three weeks, my 2006 Cobalt has been shifting hard, giving me a "power steering" message in the dash, security light on, total power steering failure, and a knocking noise in the gear shifter. I've had it to the dealership on numerous occasions for these problems. They replaced the ignition switch and said it was fixed, and a week later it started doing it again. Now they are telling me that they can't find the problem and treating me like I have no idea what I'm talking about. I've only had the car for two years, and my warranty expires next year. It went from happening once a week to happening daily. Sometimes I'll drive it, and nothing will happen. Other times all I have to do is start the car and it starts doing it.
