The light on the dash switches over and says that it is on whenever the vehicle is running and someone is sitting in it but it will ding at them until they put their seat belt on. Whenever they put the seat belt on, the driver information center (dic) on my dash tells me to service airbag and the light that tells when the airbag is on or off says that it is off.

One morning when I started my 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt with the 2lt trim package, the airbag readiness light came on and stayed on the whole time I was driving, and at the same time the passenger airbag status indicator off symbol was lit. The car had never been involved in an accident and the approximate millage on my car at this time was 50,577. There was a person setting in the passenger seat that weighed approximately 140 pounds, so the airbag should have been on. Ever since that day, every time I start my car the airbag readiness light and the passenger airbag off lite come on and stays on. I checked the connectors under the passenger seat and all were connected. I took my car, paid out of pocket to have diagnostic testing to get the error codes for this but no codes were shown. Recently I took it to the dealership for the ignition switch safety recall repaired. After reading Chevrolet Cobalt technical service bulletins about airbags, numerous complaints from other Cobalt owners about this exact problem, recalls that had the term airbags mentioned, I decided to tell my concern to the service employees and was told this wasn't covered, that I could pay for them to do testing on it. Seeing as I had already paid for the exact same testing before with no results as to what was wrong, I declined to have it done again. I contacted Chevrolet by email concerning this. They emailed me back asking for additional information. I replyed with that information and have never heard anything back from them. What do those of us who have safety concerns associated with the airbags need to do to get Chevrolet to acknoweledge that this is a problem that needs their attention seeing as this is a common problem with the Cobalts? seeing as Chevrolet has put out technical service bulletins concerning this exact problem proves they are aware of it but have yet to do anything about it.

Sensor in passenger seat malfunction and pretensioner on passengers side failure deactivated passengers side airbag system.
On 9/24/2012 at around 5 pm my wife and daughter were at the navarro county college to see a teacher, my daughter who had just had mayjor surgery got locked into the front passanger side seat belt. After 10 minutes and 2 sercurity gaurds and 2 nice gentlemen tried all they could they could not get my daughter seatbelt to come unbuckled so they had to cut her out of the seat belt. This is a seriouse incedent that needs to be addressed , when I called the local dealer in ennis he said OH its no big deal ! he wasen't the one who just had surgery on her arm and was stuck in a seatbelt. I want someone to call me back on this! I think chevy should let people know this can happen at any time. I also think chevy should pay for the repairs.
The right rear seat belt will not realease to allow anyone to sit within the vehicle and buckle up. I brought this along to the attention of my service provider and was advised that this is accessory equipment and that I would be charged for the repair of this equipment along with a trouble shooting charge as to why it would not release. The tire pressure monitoring system has failed, thereby causing light to display on the dash. I have taken this back to the dealership for a third time and now a part has been ordered to replace the defective monitor and I'm being billed for this as well. I have been provided with a loaner, since the part was going to take overnight to arrive and the dealer's loaner has the same issue. I have obtaind the VIN for this vehicle of needed, but would like to know if either of these have been reported and the circumstances around the actual replacement costs.

Driving down the road and the airbag on the passengers side shuts off with a passenger in the seat. Service airbag light goes on. Shut the car off and restart then it will be fine for a while. I think it is sensor on the seatbelt retractor.

The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who replaced the front driver and passenger side seatbelts. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 8,000.
On occasion my seat belt gets stuck and wont unbuckle. This is not safe if you need to hurry and get out.

The seat belt did not latch properly which caused her to hit the steering wheel. Also, the front driver seat broke away from the frame. The air bags did not deploy and onstar was not alerted of the incident. The contact was injured and treated at a nearby hospital. The manufacturer had not been notified. My wife an I were stoped at middlebrook pike trafic light waiting for the oncoming traffic to pass on western avenue in knoxville, tennessee so that we could make a right turn. We were rear ended by another vehicle who failed to stop. My seat belt did not restrain me ,I was bouncing back and forth several times(I remember going back and forth around 3 to 4 times before it knocked me out). The seat belt just did not hold me ! at that time I weighed about 250 to 260lbs. I was paralized from the waist down for about 9 days at the university of tennessee hospital in knoxville on the neuro floor. I have been to patricia neal rehabation several times and they have fitted me for a power wheel chair. If the seatbelt would have worked properly I would not be in this situation the head rest is bent and loose were my head bounced off of it severaltimes, an the seat itself moves when it is supposed to be stationary(it can go forward or backward) without warning. The car dealer said they was a recall on the seat belts on this car but they never did fix them. The car dealer had people who bought vehicles sign papers that they had their pre-delivery inspection when they did not. The dealer would give them a tank of gas for it an also for any letter from gm on ranking the local dealer's service favorably only. This dealer knew of several recalls on this vehicle but they did not want to fix them under the manufactors warranty. My wife called gm headquarters and they told her that if she had any more problems with her car they would replace it . I also have a spinal cord injury.
Power steering went out while driving on the high way. Luckily I am a strong man and was driving and not my wife. The front passenger seat belt is now no longer usable due to the fact that it is stuck buckled together for the 2nd time. It can no be detached. This is a safety hazard. And now I must replace this seat belt and buckle.

On the Cobalt coupe there is a seat belt guide attached to the front seat headrest assemblies. For a taller driver that sits with the driver's seat in a rearward position, when leaning forward the seat belt can become pinched between the guide's opening due to the slot being along the horizontal (side) edge of the guide. When leaning forward this causes the belt to get caught, then if the driver leans back into the seat there are multiple inches of slack in the upper seat belt and it will not properly restrain the driver. The driver needs to constantly manually free and re-seat the belt inside the guide loop or leave it outside the guide.
Was hit from a car going 70 miles per hr. The seat belts that morning were not working for the driver side, enabling my mother to have safety protection. We have evidence and pictures of this, she was thrown out of the car. The passenger side airbag did not deploy, because we were hit at such a fast speed, it caused our car to spin around in circles and run into a building. The passenger side seat belt also did not lock up, causing me to be thrown into the driver seat without the airbags presence to keep me in place. I am disgusted to know there was acknowledgment of this in 2004 yet they just now choose to call a recall on these situations.
