I am the third owner of this car and it has 24,500 original miles. At 19,000 (4/19/2004) the steering column lock recall was performed. Then in 2006 it was announced that even those initial recall repairs were failing and it was suggested to have the locking pin removed altogether which never was done to my car. 9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2015

I recently discovered I have a service column lock on my car and have discovered its a recall problem. Nhtsa campagn number is 04v060000 and NHTSA action number is ea02031 and gm recall number is 04006. Momentumchevrolet located in san jose are denying this recall and don't want to fix it when it clearly is a recall. So my question is are they allowed to not fix it when its a recall?.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2015

The Corvette shut down and displayed steering column lock. Based on prior gm Corvette recalls the recall to fix this problem (steering column lock) where they state "a crash could occur without warning" did not cover all Corvettes made during this time period. Gm service operations dcs851 effective through 2003. I did not get far with gm or the dealership on addressing the column lock issue. Since gm states it could result in a crash it surprised me that they don't have any interest in looking into whether the recall should be expanded to include other Corvettes during the time period they had over 126,000 affected. If it was necessary back than what is different now?.

11 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

The vehicle was repaired under a recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 04v060000 (steering) however, the contact was held responsible for the remedy repair expense even though the VIN was included in the recall. After the repair was performed, the fuel supply began to shut off and the vehicle failed to accelerate when driving at low speeds. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was awaiting diagnosis of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 52,000. The VIN was unavailable.

12 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2012

My steering wheel locked up when pulling out of a parking space. I took it to the dealer for the factory recall. They said that the factory recall procedure had already been done on the car once. They said that because it has been more than 12 months since the first repair was done they will not cover the expense of fixing the problem. I now have the choice of driving a car that has a steering column that may lock up while driving or having to fork over close to $1000 to have them fix something that should have been done right the first time.

13 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

I want to report a recurring problem with chevy Corvettes 97-04 model years. The steering column lock on these cars malfunctions and renders your car immobilized. My 1999 model with 46000 miles has been through 2 recalls in 2001 and 2004 and locked up again this past Saturday. I had the car towed to a gm dealer and according to chevy I have to pay for the repairs. What is the use of a recall if it doesn't solve the problem. It is also a safety issue. Can you imagine driving at interstate highway speeds and your steering wheel locks up and you have no control? this problem happens to all Corvettes in these years but it is more prevalent with manual transmissions. Chevrolet needs to fix at their expense this serious defect before someone gets killed if they haven't already. This is a major inconvenience, expense and safety issue for Corvette owners. Chevrolet should have corrected this problem 2 recalls ago.

14 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle and attempting to shift into reverse, the steering assist seized and the vehicle stalled. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id 04v060000 (steering) and the vehicle was repaired under the recall, but the failure recurred three times. The failure mileage was 119,555. The current mileage was 131,010. Kmj.

15 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2009

I would like to know how to place a complaint about gm. They have had a recall on y Corvette where the steering column would lock up and fuel shuts off. They refuse to pay for the repair . My car is at the dealer and the service manager even said its related to the recall . I think this should be reported ASAP. Many other Corvette owners are affected by this defect and gm refuses to pay and claims that the cars is out of warrant this is a 1999 Corvette. A recall is a recall and it should be fixed free of charge to the consumer. Please advise on how to proceed and further report gm for this abuse.

16 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2009

Service column lock was recalled and fixed in 2006 but service column lock occurred again. This has been an ongoing problem well documented and gm has no fix for it it appears there are several fixes out there at the cost of the consumer which is not appropriate that gm refuses to properly troubleshoot this problem which is even occurring after the required ntsb recall repair is made.

17 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2008

I attempted to drive my 1999 Chevrolet Corvette and the vehicle steering column locked up. I investigated the issue and found recall notification ea02031. However after notifying the my local dealer paradice Chevrolet temecula CA of the issue they researched my VIN and to my surprise the recall service had already been performed on my vehicle in 2005 I am deeply concerned that the matter was not resolved properly and there my still be an issue the manufacturer has not uncovered. Please advise?.

18 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2008

I have a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette that has had problems with the steering column from day one and has never been properly fixed. Now, the dealership says it's my responsibility to fix it.

19 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2008

Backing out of driveway in my 1999 Corvette, steering column locked causing me to go over a curb. Warning light came on dash board. I had car towed to nearest chevy dealer where they proceeded to change the steering column lock motor. They told me that a recall (#04006b on Feb/2004)on this car was performed and it was no longer covered under warranty. When I inquired as to a second posted recall #04006c) service mgr told me he knew nothing about second recall. They charged me $579. 79 to repair and did not follow the guide lines stated in the second recall, where as the column lock assembly is to be rendered inoperative. I feel I was taken advantage of and Chevrolet refuses to reimburse me and disable the lock assembly. Talking to other people on line, this problem has returned on many vehicles after recall was performed. I am weary of driving my car because I never know if and when my steering column will lock causing an accident or possible loss of life. Gm must be forced to do the right thing here and I want my money back.

20 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2007

The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette. While pulling out of the driveway, the steering locked to the left. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the steering column lock failed. The vehicle was repaired. A year and a half later, the contact was attempting to pull off, but was unable to steer the vehicle. He then noticed that a light was illuminated, which stated "steering column lock failure". The contact is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer for further inspection. He filed a report with the manufacturer, but was not offered any compensation for the failure. The failure mileage was 35,000 and current mileage was 43,000. Updated 08/14/09. Updated 08/14/09.

21 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

Before a gm dealer sells a used gm car, shouldn't they have to run the VIN to see if any recalls are outstanding on that vehicle?? bought my vette from micheal Chevrolet, called another dealer to find out the steering wheel lock recall was never done! I am a vehicle rep. For Ford, and am responsible for 500 company lease vehicles. I would be in a huge amount of trouble if I sent a used vehicle back to our b lot or out to auction without all recalls being completed!.

22 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2003

I have a 1999 Corvette that at 13,000 miles. The steering column locked up. It has 40,000 miles now and it has locked up again almost causing us to have an accident. Ref. In ea02-031.

23 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2003

While driving my 1999 Chevrolet Corvette I turned off the highway & into the parking lot of a store upon doing so my steering wheel locked up. I never received any warnings in my dic about steering problems I also had this replacement part per a recall notice less than a year ago & at that time found out it had been replaced prior to that. The dealership towed the car in & informed us that they had fixed it again! this is an extremely dangerous vehicle! the notes I read on your site even 1997 through 2002 models with this problem none of the reports were while driving they were when people got into their car & started it that the wheel didn't unlock. I have as I said before never received a message in the dic prior to any of the lock up problem. I am the 2nd owner of this vehicle & in the 18 months I have had it it has been replaced 2 times this last time could have been fatal to both myself and my daughter! just 10 seconds earlier being on the highway with speeds of 60 mph we could have been killed! at what cost will it take for general motors to correct this wrong? my daughter says she will not get back into the car again! I myself am scared for my life to take the chance that this will occur again! so, I refuse to drive the car anymore. These are not cheap cars to buy! I have owed several other Corvettes & had a few minor problems here & there, but not anything that could be a life threatening or life taking problem especially after the fixes being done by the dealership! another thing I would like to ask of you, if you have an automatic transmission on this car, is it not supposed to be locked when the steering wheel is? I did all the so-called things, of key removal & wait, etc & it did not unlock the steering, but you could put it in any gear to move it. Just straight forward & backward do to no steering. I can't seem to get a real answer to this question. Ref. In ea02-031.

24 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2003

I have a 1999 Corvette coupe. I was driving on folsom blvd. (at watt avenue) in sacramento, CA during rush-hour traffic (4:50 p. M. ). I pulled out into traffic and my car went completely dead. Luckily, no one rear-ended me. I was able to re-start my car but the steering wheel would not turn and a "steering column" locked message on my computer read out instructed me to wait 10 seconds then remove the key. So I complied. I then again started my car, but the "steering column" locked message came on and my steering column was, indeed, locked. Luckily, my steering wheel was aimed in a straight line and I could drive forward out of the busy intersection where I stopped in front of a gas station. I called folsom Chevrolet's service dept. And they advised I would need to have my vehicle towed into their shop. This problem could have easily ended up in a terrible accident had I not been in stop-and-go traffice. Can you imagine what would've happened if I was on the freeway doing 65-70 mph? ref. In ea02-031.

25 Steering Column problem

While starting, the steering wheel column would not unlock. The vehicle was repaired under recall for same problem, which has recurred.

26 Steering Column problem

After the recall for steering column was performed, the remedy failed. Add'l information rec'd from consumer on 9/23/2003 - I was at a local post office on Sunday and I had to wait 2. 5 hrs for a tow truck. Then george chevy in bellflower , CA told me it was not covered anymore and this was a dead item. I had to take it to a mechanic to fix it. I installed off-the-shelf (ots) by-pass kit so as to not be driving around and have it lock up. See repository for information on ots by-pass kit and other details. Cat.
