Steering Anti-theft Device problems of the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette - part 2

While starting up the vehicle steering column locked up. Consumer tried to unlock steering column, but was unable to do so. Consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced a steering column mechanism due to a worn out part.

While reversing out of the driveway steering wheel locked up. Consumer immediately depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. Recall o4v060000 was issued for the electronic column lock. However, this vehicle was not included due to VIN.

Consumer had the same problem as NHTSA campaign #04v060000 vehicles equipped with electronic column lock systems (ecl), when the ignition switch was turned to lock, the ecl prevents turning of the steering system. When the vehicle is started, the ecl unlocks the steering system. Dealership indicated there is not recall and did know what the consumer was talking about.

Parked vehicle, returned, inserted key, and steering column locked. Could not turn steering wheel. In the process of having vehicle towed to dealer.

After starting the vehicle, steering wheel would lock up. The consumer would try numerous times to unlock the steering wheel. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The consumer was told by the dealer that he was 54 days late to have the recall work done.

Upon starting the vehicle a service column lock message was displayed upon the dashboard when the keys was turned in the ignition. When this occurred steering wheel locked up. Recall 04v006000 was issued for the electronic column lock, but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN.

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that there was NHTSA recall, campaign 04v060000, regarding the steering column locking: anti-theft device. The consumer stated that the remedy for this recall was not sufficient, and recommended that the vehicles be repaired as the european vehicles were instead of disabling the anti-theft device. The consumer has contacted the service dealer and the manufacturer, and they did offer to repair the vehicle under NHTSA's recall remedy.

After paying for a technician to temporarily fix my locking steering column so I could get my Corvette home, I obtained recall information over the internet that said the problem I had was to be fixed with a recall kit. After contacting mauher Chevrolet in st. Petersburg, FL. , I was told that the recall had already been satisfied for my vehicle. The kit includes a plate and a relay bypass that disables the locking mechanism in the steering column. Obviously, their info. Is wrong because the wheel locks and sometimes stays locked when it's not supposed to. They say there is nothing they can do for me. I am not comfortable driving my vehicle in fear of it malfunctioning while I'm driving and the dealer will not perform the work as they should. My VIN number is 1g1yy32g6y5113238, 2000 Corvette. Please help.

While pulling into a parking lot steering wheel locked up. Driver had the vehicle towed to the dealership for analysis. Consumer wasn't driving at the time of failure.

I own a gm Chevrolet Corvette convertible 2000. The steering column is locked due to a defective steering lock. Gm has put our a service/recall for select Corvettes manufactured between 1998 and 2000. Service bulletin 01044 and service operations dcs 771 I called gm but they say my car is not included in this recall because my VIN number was not included even though my Corvette is a 2000 model and I am suffering from the same problem as other owners have encountered. Please let me know what I can do or if gm can be forced to include my car in the recall as well. Thanks tony tsai, MD 718-261-9068.

Steering column lock actuator failed. Was told no recall, but this happens alot on this car and the part was updated for the newer cars so this wouldn't happen anymore. Had to have steering lock actuator assembly replaced.

I own a 2000 Corvette with 15,000 miles and have twice within one day had my steering wheel not unlock upon starting the car. Went to a Corvette shop for help was told its a common problem with Corvettes and that I should pull the steering wheel clockwise while inserting the key into the ignition, it worked. My question is there a permanent fix for this problem, I understand that it is a common problem concerning Corvettes.

Vehicle fails to unlock on its start up, campaign 01044a, already performed.

Steering column lock w/ a dic code of 2592.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with the steering wheel locking up. Also, there is a recall where the consumer's vehicle was not included due to VIN even though his vehicle is doing the samething. Consumer was backing out of garage and had moved about 6-8 ft when he tried to turn the steering wheel and could not. Cosnumer pulled car back into garage and shut off car. Restarted car about 10 times to try to get the steering wheel unlocked, but it would not unlock. Since vehicle was not covered by csc 1044a, customer had TSB repair performed on vehicle, but had to pay for it himself.

Steering wheel column locked when starting car. Dic message said to remove key for 10 seconds then try again. Samething happened when key reinserted. The car started and moved forward or backwards, but the steering wheel could not be moved.

After turning key engine steering wheel would not unlock. Dealer has been contacted. Occurred 3x owner has had over the counter by-pass kit installed. Cat.

Service column lock dic message. Unable to drive. Towed to dealer for repairs. Owner was told vehicle not covered by recall because VIN outside breakpoint.

I own a 2000 chevy Corvette mn6. At 26000 miles I got a column lock error where the column lock does not disengage when the key is turned to start. I've seen many similiar complaints on the Corvette forum and am adding my name to the list of customers that have had this problem. According to chevy my car is not in the VIN group that would have gotten a free fix if I had the problem prior to 1-7-03. This obviously should never happen.

Steering column locked while the vehicle was parked. I spoke w/4 different sales persons, customer service reps, and mechanics at dealership and no one knew why, and all they could tell me was to have the vehicle towed. 1 little problem, the vehicle was parked in a parking space, and it took two tow trucks and 3 hours of my time to get the vehicle on a flat bed, that is after knocking on all the neighbor's doors to findout who owns which car, and having move their cars, so the tow guys can access the vehicle by placed the front of it on a free wheel and read of it on a free wheel, turning the vehicle 180 degrees, and then placing it on a flat bed. Ref. In ea02-031.

Steering column locked up. I was lucky that it was in my garage. I had it towed to the dealer to get it fixed. This is a very frightening problem, what would have happened if I was going 70 mph on the highway. Ref. In ea02-031.

The vehicle's steering column had locked while starting and would also lock up while driving. The dealer had been notified. Ts scc ref. In ea02-031.

While driving at 70 mph steering wheel locked up causing vehicle to cross the median and hit an oncoming vehicle. Both cars were totaled. Consumer suggest a recall on chevy Corvette. See odi# 10029388 for add'l details.

Consumer stated the steering column failed to unlock, the vehicle had to be towed. Ref. In ea02-031.

04 v 060 000/electronic column lock: vehicle was taken to the dealer on three separate occasions because of a problem with the steering column locking up while starting the vehicle. Please provide dealer information.

2000 Corvette steering lock problem. I received a note from gm saying that they would disconnect the lock and if I did not have it done in a timely manner they would wash their hands of the problem. I paid $45m for the car and the solution was to disarm a safety feature. I complied because I was afraid the lock would engage while driving. I felt I had no choice. Ts ref. In ea02-031.

Column lock on the c5 Corvette is all to common and a recurring issue stranding car and passengers in remote locations putting them at risk. Car must be towed to be repaired.

The steering column lockup occurred on start up. Gm's fix for this condition was performed by the dealer and there has been no further occurrence. However, two of my friends have had the "dealer fix" performed, only to have the failure happen a second time. I am worried that this lockup will happen at speed. Ref. In ea02-031.

This car is equipped with a motorized column lock which will send an error code and disable the car requiring a tow. While I have only gotten an error code, I will eventually receive a lock up and require a costly and inconvenient tow job. I am told that there is no occurance of a lock up during movement of the car. Many others have purchased a kit which negates this devise but it would most likely void my warranty, for this reason I'm reporting this condition.

Steering wheel locked up. Took vehicle to the dealer, and dealer told consumer not to drive.

While driving 60 mph warning indicator steering wheel lock came on, and the steering wheel locked, and would not turn. Recently, the vehicle was started, and the warning indicator illuminated again. Consumer turned the steering wheel and heard a grinding noise. Recall 04v060000 concerning electronic column lock was issued, but this vehicle was not included due to VIN. (consumer indicated in follow-up phone call with cheryl tuosto on 3/9/04 that incident occurring at 60 mph happened to previous owner, david pritchard (see ea02-031 - gm complaint case # 06735883 and odi notes) and not himself. Lawrence only experienced failure of the column to unlock and only drove car about a foot before he noticed "service column lock" message and shut off the car. Cat.

While driving steering wheel locks up. Dealership replaced the locking pin ,but problem recurred.

Consumer noticed after starting vehicle steering wheel was still locked, and consumer was unable to make any turns.
