36 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2021

This is an update to complaint 11432856 wheel cracking. I have learned that gm has made available a parameter update to soften the magnetic ride control on this model (austensibly to soften the suspension which will possibly cause fewer wheels to crack even though they dont admit to having a problem). But they have the gall to charge about $450 to provide, download and install this by the dealer. I have already spent over $400 getting 2 wheels repaired and now they want to make money to lessen the impact of a defect. By charging $450 to the customer with the defect. That is completely unacceptable.

37 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2021

Add me to the long list of people that have cracked aluminum Corvette wheels. I purchased used Aug 11, 2021 without defects being known. After getting a repair on a slow leak puncture by removing the wheel/tire and taking to shop, I was told I have 3 cracks in the inside flange of the 20 inch rear wheel. Upon returning home, I examined the other 3 wheels. The other 20 inch rear also has 3 cracks. Come on NHTSA, dont let gm give you the bull on this about it being potholes. Get a metallurgist on the case and go after both gm and the wheel mfr. Date below was when I learned of the condition.

38 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2021

Passenger side rear wheel cracked leading to a leak in the tire. Wheel is oe - came on the car when new. Chrome. This is a safety hazard should this occur on a track or at highway speeds.

39 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2021

Both rear wheels cracked. Lost air pressure in tires. Potential catastrophic tire failure while driving. There are many many documented cases. Gm denied my claim for reimbursement of replacement wheels. No warnings until the loss of air pressure.

40 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2021

I have had two rear wheels crack in multiple places which required me to buy new wheels, gm refused any warranty claim and referred me to the dealer, the dealer put me on hold for ten to 20 minutes 3 times and refused to talk to me about the problem. The first wheel broke at27,000, the second at 38,000 miles.

41 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2021

My left rear wheel developed a crack. Luckily I noticed this quickly, or a catastrophic failure could have occurred leading to loss of vehicle control and potential crash. These failures are well documented on the web, with 100's of owners experiencing the same failure. Gm made a poor engineering/cost decision when deciding to use cast wheels on a high performance car with a large drum overhang and stiff low profile tires. Forged wheels are much stronger and should have used in this application. A gm dealership has looked at the problem and did contact gm. As with all the other cases, they refuse to take responsibility. Some people have gotten reimbursed for their cost by gm after arbitration via the bbb.

42 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2021

Drivers side rear wheel developed a slow leak. I took the car to my tire dealer and they found a crack on the inner outer edge of the wheel. My research shows a pattern of this problem and a class action lawsuit has been started. My car is considered a super car of speeds in excess of 200 mph. This is a serious safety hazard. What is my best course of action on this dangerous situation?.

43 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2021

The dealer, cosmo motors, inc. , failed to disclose that three of the four wheels on the vehicle have been repaired, even though the car goes under a multi point inspection at their location. One of the repairs looks particularly bad with two sections that are six inches long and not straight. The dealer was not willing to take the vehicle back or replace the wheels.

44 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2021

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the rear passenger's side wheel cracked. The vehicle was not repaired nor was the wheel replaced. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

45 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2020

Rear rims are cracking tires losing air. Possibly have a tire blow out. Tires have been leaking for over 12 months slowly. Finally found the problem.

46 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2020

Bent and cracked Corvette grand sport rims.

47 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2020

The rear passenger wheel developed two cracks in the inner outside edge of rim. Cracks appeared with no noticeable road trauma/debris/collision. First indication was slow leak of air from tire. Tire was inflated and vehicle was driven two more times. On the second drive of approx 10 miles, air had leaked out of the tire. On the third drive of approximately 3 miles, the tire would not hold air. Tire was removed and cracks discovered in rim.

48 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2020

The right rear tire is leaking air. I brought it to be repaired and was told the wheel is cracked and will not hold air. The air leaks when stationary, moving on city streets and highways.

49 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2020

Just discovered that one of my tires is leaking air because of a crack in the wheel. This car has never been tracked or raced and has never been driven in rough conditions or received damage. There is no justifiable reason for the cracked wheel. The wheel only has ~10,000 miles on it. This crack could leak to a blowout on the road and is due to manufacturing defects, but gm is refusing to acknowledge the issue / issue a recall. The defect is also not covered under their warranties. This is a massive safety hazard that will eventually spread to the rest of my wheels (very common issue for wide body c7 Corvettes).

50 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2020

Air was leaking out of the tire. We kept refilling it and took it to les schwab today only to be told that the rim was cracked. We drive this Corvette carefully and have never hit a pot hole.

51 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2020

3 hairline cracks were identified due to a slow air leak in the right rear tire. Discount tire shop examined the wheel by submerging it in water. I contacted the Chevrolet dealer to inquire about a potential recall, but no luck. One oem wheel was quoted at $688. 00. The vehicle has been primarily driven on highways.

52 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2020

The right rear wheel was always showing it was low on air . I took off the wheel and noticed it was cracked and leaking air.

53 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2020

On the evening of October 9, 2020, the air bag on my 2017 Corvette z06 unexpectly deployed without any warning in my face blocking my view while driving downhill around 45 miles per hour and without me striking any object on the two-lane highway. I believe the right front wheel was defective and broke puncturing the right front tire that caused the right front suspension and frame rails to strike the road surface and break the right front suspension in two that caused me to lose control of the steering and strike the hillside along the two-lane road causing over $38,854. 00 worth of damage to my Corvette that grew to $44,000. 00. My Corvette had never been previously involved in any accidents whatsoever. There is a class action law suit proceeding through the courts now against general motors related to Corvette wheels cracking and causing damage to Corvette owners tires and cars in varying degrees. Esis who represents general motors, investigated my defects claim and after general motors received and reviewed my documentation and photos about the unexpected air bag deployment, suspected wheel and suspension defects they stated that no defects exist. I have attached photos and have the right front cracked wheel, punctured tire and broken suspension components in storage for examination to assist in determining the cause of the suspected defects as stated. The unexpected air bag deployment, cracked wheel and suspension failure caused me to strike the hillside and could also have caused me to collide and strike oncoming motorists causing property damage, personal injury and possible death to me and other motorists. .

54 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2020

Soon after buying the car in may 2018, had to replace 3 of the 4 rims for being bent. I didn't hit any potholes or anything. Had to pay out of pocket because gm would not warranty the rims. On Sep 26,2020; one of the replaced rims (mentioned above) cracked and started leaking (left rear). All I do is normal driving and do not hit pot holes etc. There is obviously a defect in these rims. The car only has 45k miles and I've replaced 4 rims due to a defect that the manufacturer will not cover.

55 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2020

When driving the car vibrated. I took the car to the local chevy dealer to get the wheels balanced and was told two of the wheels could not be balanced because they were bent. In spite of my 3yr, 36k mile bumper to bumper warranty (which was in force) I was told chevy would not cover the cost of repairs.

56 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2020

My vehicle doesn't see harsh road conditions in fact it is kept in the garage 100% of the time and gets maybe 5-7k miles per year. Never tracked or abused. Since I've purchased the vehicle I have had to take it to the dealer several times for low tire pressure and the dealer constantly says there's nothing wrong.

57 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2020

Tl- the contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that the left rear rim manufacturer number: 84073058, fractured under normal driving condition due to the manufacturer design. The contact stated that the left rear tire became deflated and taken the vehicle to a independent mechanic tire shop and was informed the left rear rim fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was later taken to bellamy strickland Chevrolet Buick GMC, 145 industrial blvd, mcdonough, GA 30253, and was informed the vehicle left rear rim was fracture and needed to be replaced. The contact mention that the dealer will not cover the failure under warranty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided a case number. The failure mileage was approximately 22,600. Aw.

58 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

I had to replace two wheels because they were cracking and the air leaks out.

59 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Both rear wheels cracked and I had to spend more money to replace them.

60 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

I have 2 cracked rear wheels and 1 bent front wheel 2017 Corvette zo6.

61 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Right rear wheel has cracked, and will need to be replaced. I took car in to my local tire store because I though I might have picked up a nail, as the car was reporting low pressure in that tire. Tire store unmounted the wheel and showed me two cracks from inside edge of the rim towards center. Apx 2" each. No visible damage to tire or wheel indictive of a pot hole or other impact. I drove the car to take my girfriend out to dinner the night before and she also stated I didn't hit anything. Based on many many reports of similar failures on Corvette forums and pending class action lawsuits, I believe the wheels were defective when new. Because I have three other wheels which may have the same issue, I will have to purchase aftermarket wheels and hope they are a more robust design.

62 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2020

Cracked rear left wheel at 25k, inside rim - Aug 2020 cracked rear right wheel at 26k, inside rim - oct 2020 both wheels started leaking air, no pothole, no damage, just normal driving car is a daily driver in san diego, CA.

63 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2020

I've had all four wheels on my 2017 Chevrolet grand sport crack or bend (two cracked (one wheel has three cracks), four bent). . Read more...

64 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2020

Bent and cracked right rear wheel. All other wheels are out-of-round. Happened under normal driving conditions. Dealer wouldn't cover under manufacturer warranty. Stated it was normal wear and tear, but offered to sell me a tire and wheel protection package to cover future damage for $2500. 00. I replace all four wheels with gm 2013 Corvette zr-1 wheels. I retained the defective wheels in my garage.

65 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2020

While driving the car, I continued to notice a vibration. It varied with speed and at times would be worse than at other times. This is known as a "beat frequency". I finally became very concerned, raised the car and found both passenger side rims to be bent. I had only had the car for 6 months. It came from a hendrick dealership. It is more than apparent this is another cover up by gm. I have a 2012 kia forte that is driven on the same exact roads. It cost $12,ooo and has never bent a wheel. The Corvette z06 msrp was $105,000. I had to purchase another set of wheels. Gm is not capable of producing a car that is engineered correctly.

66 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2020

The car was stationary when I got a low pressure warning that my right rear tire had low tire pressure. I went to the corner gas station and got air. Then drove to my local tire repair to get the tire repaired. They removed the tire and wheel from the car and discovered the wheel was cracked in 2 places. I went to a wheel repair shop and he told me that he would not repair a wheel with 2 cracks. I knew this was a problem for grand sports since I have a friend who had the same problem with less than 1000 miles on his 2019 grand sport. I have all so read on the Corvette forums that many people are having this same problem with either cracked or bent wheels. I do not understand why general motors is backing their wheels with their warranty. I have driven Corvettes since 1977 exclusively and never had a wheel problem. The vehicle was still within the 3 year warranty, but gm rejected the claim and refused any kind of compensation for the design defect of Corvette c7 wheels. I have since purchased a new wheel but I am worried that this problem may happen again with different consequences. My opinion is that these wheels are not designed for the vehicle.

67 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2020

Driving on regular road with no pot hole the right rear started to leak to find out after two days found out after the wheel was removed to see if it was the tire to find out the rim cracked with 7200 miles, them a month the left wheel started to loose air to find out the left rim with 2 cracks . With 7215 miles. No refund or assistance from the chevy dealer. Thank goodness I had purchased tire insurance. There must be a defect in the cheap chinese steel. While I was in the tire repair shop, 3 others Corvettes with the same problems. One vet had the rim welded 3 times before he purchased a new set. Gm should have this on recall or high safety concerns.

68 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2020

2017 Corvette with 6800 miles on it and the left wheel is bent causing a vibration when the car is moving. Discount tire said wheel could not be repaired. Left front wheel no bent.

69 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2020

Normal driving caused major/minor cracks in 2 rims with moderate loss of air pressure over course of only a few miles requiring immediate exit from highway to address unsafe condition of car. Mileage of only 18693 on the car as of 6/11/2020. No coverage per gm even under new car 3 year/36000 mile warranty or the extended warranty we purchased. Cost to me of $1501. 30. Pictures of cracks available as are the actual rims (tire service said they'd never seen anything like it in 40 years). Lawsuits pending against gm currently (class action). When they debuted the 2017 grand sport model on a 40000 mile test run they had a total of 10 cracked or bent rims due to poor rim construction. I fear that I'll lose a rim, puncture a tire and have an accident.

70 Wheel problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2020

Both rear wheels have cracks from the inner edge to the tire bead area. Both rear wheels are leaking air at over 4 psi per week as verified by bubble testing of the cracks and tire pressure measurements. Both rear wheels and tires are in excellent condition with no damage of any kind from impacts. Rear tire tread at 12,000 miles is still safe, but close to wear out limits. My tire shop cannot install new rear tires on the cracked wheels. Martin Chevrolet in torrance CA reduced their diagnostic fee to $90 for taking photos and processing a warranty claim with gm. The vehicle was still within the 3 year warranty, but gm rejected the claim and refused any kind of compensation for the design defect of Corvette c7 wheels. Gm support representative registered my case number 9-5956196745 and suggested that I have the wheels welded or buy two new wheels at my expense. The vehicle has been parked since 14 may 2020 due to risk of loss of air to rear tires. No other assistance was offered by gm or the dealer that sold me the vehicle, penske Chevrolet. The three year warranty was in effect but was not honored. One or more class action lawsuits are pending for this issue.
