37 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 03/13/2023

Hello, I recently purchased my 2017 Corvette z06 and had a gm dealership complete a complete inspection prior to taking delivery. Less than 1 month later the car developed a vibration which an independent tire shop diagnosed as one (1) cracked front wheel and one (1) bent rear wheel resulting in the vibration. I have driven less than 1k miles since inspection/purchase and the vehicle only has 29k miles total. These are the factory gm wheels which must now be replaced. I was not aware of the gm Corvette wheel issue prior to this happening but now understand this is a widespread, systemic issue. Thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

38 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 03/06/2023

I purchased this 2019 Corvette grand sport on 3/6/2023. After I had driven it a little over 300 miles the tire statred to lose air (got a low air pressure warning). Filled it with air and got another warning again. Took the wheel off the car and inspected tire and rim. Found a weld repair had been done with another crack in the rim that look like someone tried to repair that crack. No I'm stuck without a car to drive.

Failure Date: 01/27/2023

The two rear wheels were cracked on the inside near the tire bead.

40 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 01/24/2023

On 1-24-2023 at 13,224 miles the rear left tire began to lose pressure slowly. Upon investigation the rear left wheel is cracked. This is unsafe as the rapid pressure loss or splitting of a wheel can happen at interstate speeds. This can cause an accident. The problem was confirmed by a tire service center. It has not been inspected by anyone other than myself and the tire center. The car tpms warning displayed to alert the low pressure condition.

41 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 01/10/2023

On 1/10/23 I visited discount tire at 520pm my driver side rear tire has had a slow leak for 2 days so I was getting the tire checked out. The tech called me over and showed me a crack on rim he sprayed with soapy water and it bubbled he said your tire is fine the leak is coming from your cracked wheel I called my local dealership and they stated they will get back with me. I have read hundreds of complaints on Corvette forums where owners are having the same issues. . Gm selling defective wheels. . . . . . Even a class action lawsuit still being settled.

42 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 12/30/2022

On 12/30 had a tire losing air visited discount tire to see if tire had a leak the showed me 2 cracks on the actual wheel. Discount tire stated my wheel must be replaced. I have read on various Corvette forums hundreds of c7 owners with the same issue the wheels appear to defective. I went to dealer and purchased new wheel for $1100 for one wheel I contacted gm to try to get reimbursed and they said nope!!! there is a class action law suit still pending.

43 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 12/21/2022

I have 32,800 miles on my 2019 Corvette grand sport. Each year during my annual service, I have had to have wheels repaired that were bent. Today, during my regular service, both of my rear wheels were identified as cracked and must be replaced. Cracked wheels on the 2017 to 2019 Corvette grand sport and z06 models is a significant safety issue and needs to be addressed by your organization. Gm should be forced to replaced all of these poorly engineered wheels before someone is killed or injured in an accident when the wheels fail.

44 Wheel problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/28/2022

Overview: beginning sometime in 2020, the coating of the rearview inside mirror began to degrade and lose its reflective capability. By [xxx] visibility through the mirror was so bad that I had to have it replaced by the local chevy dealership. Because it was out of warranty, I had to pay $453. 93 out of pocket. The vehicle was unsafe to drive due to the mirror's degraded condition. 1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? rearview interior mirror 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I could not see clearly in the rearview mirror. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? many other drivers have reported the same issue with this model on the Corvette forum (see [xxx] ) also, sunrise Chevrolet in collierville, TN confirmed the mirror was defective and replaced it at my expense. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

45 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/28/2022

Rear wheels cracked begot flat tire.

46 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/10/2022

My Corvette developed a cracked wheel. We took it to the dealership that put new tires on a week ago because the low air alarm came on. They informed me the wheel was cracked and denied damaging it when putting on the new tires. “it just happens” was their claim. Now we learn there is a class action lawsuit because so many generation c7 Corvettes are suffering unexplainable wheel failures. Gm is denying warranty claims and it’s costing the car owners thousands of dollars to replace wheels. The wheel I need is going to be $1200 and will likely be yet another oem wheel prone to the same problem. Should this not be something in your agencies purview to investigate?.

47 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/31/2022

Drivers side rear wheel has cracked causing air to leak. If left unnoticed, this may lead to catastrophic failure as the wheel may completely break a highway speeds.

48 Wheel problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/29/2022

Started loosing tire pressure on l/r tire, local tire shop informed and showed me that my left rear rim has a crack which causes loos of air. This is a known issue that gm wants to blame on drivers but issue stems from gm using cheaper cast aluminum materials instead of forged materials which are better suited due to the amount of torque that the zo6 models generated. *note* gm used forged material on their zr1 models!!.

49 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/27/2022

Tire rack in south bend indiana went to replace my Corvettes tires and when they removed the rear wheels they identified two cracks. Due to safety policy's they could not remount my tires or pout new tires on the wheels. . . I was stuck so I called gm to discuss. Gm opened a case for me and said that is all they could do at the time. I purchased new wheels to get the car back on the road and waited for gm to call. They never did so I called and the customer service lady set up an appointment at the nearest dealer to inspect the cracked wheels. I traveled to the the dealer for the appointment and of coarse they didn't know anything about the gm ticket and sent me away. I called gm again and set me up another appointment with a different dealer and assured me the issue would get resolved. I traveled to the 2nd dealer and they didn't know anything about the gm ticket and then said if they were to look at the wheels they would have to be mounted on the car. I left and gm called me the next day and the ladt informed me that my claim / ticket was denied and will be closed out. I asked how could you deny the claim when you never even looked or inspected them?! the wheels should not be on the road and this is an ongoing issue with the c7 grand sport's and z06.

50 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/22/2022

Took the car to discount tire since the tire lost air (run flat tires). They removed the tire and the rear passenger side rim has one 3 inch and two additional cracks in the rim. No warning signs of this issue while driving at highway speeds earlier in the day. The large crack was leaking air. Rims are discontinued by Chevrolet and no replacements are available. Had to drive the car home which was an obvious safety issue. A large number of other drivers are faced with the same safety issue over these defective rims. I will add myself to any class action lawsuits over this issue so that no one is injured due to a total rim failure.

51 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 09/24/2022

The rear right wheel is confirmed having two cracks by fremont of Chevrolet. The car was not driven in any conditions beyond that would be considered "normal". We found out about this issue as the tpms would indicate low tire pressure after the car would be sitting for a few days on the rear right tire. Driving on a cracked wheel presents a danger as the crack can expand and fully deflate the tire during normal driving. This is a known issue for gm for having fragile wheels on the grand sport and z06 models.

52 Wheel problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 09/21/2022

Rear wheel cracked in 4 places inside rim towards outside causing slow leak. Could eventually crack enough to cause wheel to fail.

53 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 08/25/2022

My factory wheel cracked in two places while traveling to the Corvettes at carlisle event. I have a little over 18000 miles on my car at this point. I have taken great care of my car and have not hit and rough potholes or obstacles in the road. I have not “tracked” my car either. I have read about many other Corvette z06 and grand sport owners who have suffered the same cracked and bent rim issues with the stock gm supplied wheels. Apparently the wheels are faulty as reported by hundreds of dissatisfied owners. The cracked wheels fail to hold air pressure causing a safety situation while driving at highway speeds. I understand that there is a current class action lawsuit in progress. I feel that gm should stand by their product and replace these inferior wheels with safer, more sturdy ones. . Especially for the price we paid for the vehicle. At this point, the consumers need the NHTSA to help us with this situation as gm has refused to accept any responsibility at this point. They blame the consumer’s driving habits as a reason for the issue…. Not the obvious faulting manufacturing of the wheel. I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to hearing your response. Sincerely, doug sutor d. Sutor@comcast. Net.

54 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 07/12/2022

Left front wheel was found to be out of round (bent), when trying to balance the wheel assembly due to vibration. The wheel was straightened, and the vibration was resolved. Left rear tire lost pressure while driving on open road in wyoming. Managed to get to les schwab tire store. They removed the wheel/tire assembly, submerged in water tank and found the air leaking through the cracked wheel. Dash warning light had come on indicating the loss of pressure. Local gm dealer (whistler Chevrolet) was able to order a replacement wheel and it was installed the next day. The expense of the new wheel and mounting was in excess of $900.

55 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

Two of the wheels of my 2019 Corvette have cracked. GMC has turned this issue over to analytics consulting llc to reimburse those owners that have had a problem with cracked wheels. I submitted a claim for one of the wheels, in July of 2025 and have yet to hear from them. In the mean time I had another wheel crack but I can not claim that one because it's beyond the date they set. I contacted GMC and their response was they couldn't do anything for me. My point in this whole matter is that I've had two wheels crack but I still have two that might crack. GMC admits to defective wheels and yet there was never a recall. They are playing russian roulette with Corvette wheels that are on the road daily. I've had costly repair bills for wheels that were defective when GMC put them on my car. These wheels could crack at any point while I'm driving or god forbid when my wife is driving. She doesn't want to ride in the car anymore because she feels it's unsafe. I can't sell it because I would have to affirm that these wheels might crack. Who would buy my car? the value of my dream car has plummeted. I'd like reimbursed for the two I've already paid for and all four wheels replaced with wheels that have been tested and new ones that are proven to be safe. Is it too much to ask GMC to build safe cars? they say it is important to them that the customer satisfaction and safety is utmost. I'm asking them to live up to that so I need your help to see that they do.

56 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/21/2022

A "low tire pressure" alert shown on my dashboard referring to rear left tire. This car has 17,000 miles since new, and new tires less then 90 days before. I added correct air pressure, parked car in garage, 3 days later same notice, tire low on air. First removed left rear, cleaned and inspected and noticed approximately 1" crack along the rim. Check with water and found leak. Repeated for right side, a crack which is currently not leaking air. Photos of both rims ae attached.

57 Wheel problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/15/2022

Purchased the vehicle February 2018. In September 2019, I replaced the tires and within a few days, I started losing air pressure. Both rear wheels cracked. I tried to get gm to honor the 36 month bumper to bumper warranty but they refused. I purchased replacement wheels at my own expense. In June 2022, after 9000 miles, the car started driving rough so I brought it to the dealership. Both the driver side wheels, front and back, are bent.

58 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the rear passenger’s side tpms warning light illuminated. Upon inspection it was discovered that the inside section of the rear passengers’ side wheel had cracked causing air to leak out the tire. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the wheel and the failure was remedied. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the failure had occurred on two similar vehicles he owns. The failure mileage was 18,000.

59 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 04/04/2022

Passenger side rear wheel developed a crack causing an air leak. Defect was acknowledged and wheel was replaced under a purchased extended warranty specific for tires and wheels. I purchased this warranty specifically due to the common complaint of cracked wheels on this model line (Chevrolet Corvette grand sport), built between 2017 - 2019. With the slow leak, this damaged wheel did not present itself immediately. I drove the vehicle for an undetermined amount of miles, but it is safe to assume at least 3k miles as I would add air to the effected tire/wheel multiple times assuming it was due to ambient air temperature changes. A mechanically defective wheel could prove to disastrous and lfe threatening at highway speeds should a catastrophic failure occur. Approx. Mileage was 22k miles on vehicle. Only error was the tpms "low pressure" warning.

60 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 04/02/2022

Both rear wheels bent. No damage to tires. Damage caused by normal driving on surfaced roads. Several unmarked bridge transitions and minor potholes. Damage detected when wheels were checked with laser on hunter road force balancer. Front wheels were ok.

61 Wheel problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 03/23/2022

Vehicle has less than 8k miles and right rear wheel has a stress fracture on inside of wheel. Zero signs of damage to the tire or anything indicating cause of fracture was from a road hazard. Fracture causes a slow air leak. Hundreds if not 1000s of Corvette owners 2015-2019 have had this issue.

62 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 03/09/2022

The wheels crack / bend won't hold air in normal driving.

63 Wheel problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 02/15/2022

Rear rims (20 by 12, cast aluminum) have both cracked with no trauma to the rim other than simply driving the car on the street. Right rear has been repaired multiple times and has now cracked right beside the repaired cracks. The left rear has cracked on the inside by the bead and with two wheels cracked and leaking air, I have ended up ordering two new rims from gm. I put some tire sealant in the left rear and that slowed down the slow leak while the new rims were being delivered. I have talked about this many times with the dealer and with gm, and they say I must have caused the cracks by my driving, which doesn't make sense to me. They say sue me and point out that you, the nthsa, haven't ordered the rims recalled. These are now the seventh and eighth cracks that have developed on my rear rims, three different rims. One original lasted 27,000 miles before the first crack. The replacement original for that first rim lasted about 7,000 miles before the first crack. The last original rim of the same size on the back lasted 37,500 miles before the first crack appeared. I bought a 1978 Corvette new with forged aluminum rims and drove it some 150,000 miles with no rim cracking problems and I drove a 2001 Corvette z06 that I bought used for over 100,000 miles over the same roads I've now driving my 2016 Corvette on and had not a single rim cracking problem (again, forged aluminum rims on that). I have had no cracking problems with the front 19 by 10 cast aluminum rims, so it sure appears to be the rear rim cracks are because of defects in the casting process. Gm make the choice to go with cast aluminum rims instead of the stronger forged aluminum, and I don't take exception to their design choice as long as the rims hold up to everyday driving stresses. The rim cracks historically expand over time and ignoring them could, in the dealer's estimation, result in catastrophic rim failure resulting in a serious accident and potential driver fatality.

64 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 01/30/2022

2019 Corvette grand sport August 2021 - driver side rear wheel cracked losing pressure rapidly making continued driving dangerous. Instructed by a local dealership to drive at minimum speed to the dealership to prevent the degradation and potential catastrophic failure of the wheel and/or tire. Drove to a local dealership where the wheel was inspected and confirmed to be cracked. Wheel was replaced with a new oem gm Corvette wheel. January 2022 - passenger side front wheel cracked losing pressure rapidly making continued driving dangerous. Immediately drove the vehicle home and parked it until I could confirm the problem. Have not driven it since and will being the process of replacement within the week (01/30/2022).

65 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 12/14/2021

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that the tpms warning light had illuminated on the instrument panel. Upon inspection, the contact discovered that the rear passenger’s and driver’s rims were cracked. The driver’s side rim had one crack and the passenger’s side rim two cracks. The vehicle had yet to be serviced or diagnosed for the failure. The dealer nor the manufacturer have yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000.

66 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 12/08/2021

I drive my Corvette about 3000 miles per year, no highway, never in the rain. I took my GS in for new tires and was informed the driver side rear wheel was cracked and leaking air. I have never hit a bump, drove it on a track, drove on deflated tires etc. Makes no sense the rim would be cracked.

67 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 12/07/2021

March of 2019: I had unexpected flat tires, one front and one rear. There was no warning nor reason to suspect any damage. Took the car to the shop and had cracked wheels. As most Corvette owners, I pamper this car and would know/remember hitting anything. I replaced the wheels at my expense after getting no help from the Chevrolet dealer. The attached photo shows there was no impact- just a big crack. December 2021: I have one unexpected rear flat tire. Found another crack. Unexpected flat tires without warning is an obvious safety concern for me and anyone around me as I drive. After looking on the internet, there are 100's of complaints about this and multiple class-action lawsuits. This should be forced to be a recall and the government should step in. I am surprised that this has reached this point, as a risk analysis engineer. The field complaints have reached a point where the occurrence rate and the severity of the failure should flag action. Earlier in my career, I designed and tested wheels as a tier 1 supplier to gm. I know how gm tire and wheel operate. There are specs for impact and fatigue testing and I bet the poor design is very well understood. I hope you can help.

68 Wheel problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/19/2021

Rear rim (20 inch by 12 inch, cast aluminum) cracked in two places. These are the fifth and sixth cracks I've had in two rear rims. Reported it to the dealer and they effectively said "sue gm", won't help me. When the rim cracks, the tire looses air pressure and the car's sensors tell me the air pressure is low. These cracks appear on the inside of the rear wheels without any trauma to the rim. I do have the rim available for inspection upon request. Obviously a cracked rim could result in the rim coming apart while I'm driving resulting in an uncontrollable car and an accident that could be life threatening. Mileage at the moment is 37,201. Pictures of the original cracking were sent to a metalurgy professor who opined the rim was obviously defective. Gm refuses to acknowledge the cracking issue with these z06 rims and now won't even find me a replacement rim.

69 Wheel problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/10/2021

This is a common problem with the oem wheels bent that precludes proper and unsafe use. Tire inflation and balance along with vibrations are a major safety concern. I would like gm to do a recall on these wheels and help the owners for replacements with a forged aluminum wheel as opposed to the engineering mistakes made using a cast alluminum wheel.

70 Wheel problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/26/2021

During routine service at my chevy dealership, both passenger side wheels were bent (out-of-round), requiring repair, at 20,793 miles. This is the send time the passenger rear wheel was found to be bent, requiring repair.
