Power Steering Failed problems of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR - part 1

I am having power steering problems. I can be driving down the roadway at any speed between 20-80mph and all of a sudden there will be a message under the speedometer that says �power steering failure� and I will have lost all of my power steering control. I can pull over to the side of the roadway and turn my engine off and then restart the car and the power steering will work again. This has been occurring for the last 8 months too my car.

Intermittent power steering failures caused by overheating or worn electric power steering assist motor. Power steering would fail when mid-turn, at non-highway speeds, causing steering to require much more effort to work. Very high risk for mid turn collisions.

While my daughter was driving, power steering failed, dash indicator came on and she was unable to turn the wheel while in the intersection. Luckily she was on a quiet street was able to stop the vehicle safely, shut it off, then restart. Power steering was resumed after restarting. This could have happened anytime and caused an accident. Recalls show on cobalt which has same power steering for this model year, but not on Hhr. 2009 and 2010 Hhr have recalls as well. This is a major safety concern, why is there not a recall to repair? many, many reports on the internet of same problem.

I was driving at about 30mph in a residential area, when a sound went off and on the display it read "power steering. " the power steering had failed and did not come back. I was not far from home, but this has happened nearly every day since the first time. It usually only happens at low speeds, less than 45mph or so. If I turn the car off and start the engine again it's usually fine for a short time, sometimes as little as 5 minutes before the power steering fails again.

I made a right turn onto a highway and my power steering failed temporarily causing me to almost lose control of the vehicle.

Driving mountain roads when power steering failed and "power steering" indicator light came on. When engine was turned off and back on, power steering worked for about one mile before failing again. Judging by the number of similar internet complaints on the 2008 Hhr, can't understand why this problem hasn't been focus of a recall. Wonder what would have happened on that mountain road if my wife had been driving (its her car).

The power steering has failed five times in the month of August 2014. Almost failed to make my turn.

My wife was driving we had pulled out of a parking lot on route 207 in the town of hamptonburgh,NY. No more then 20 feet from exiting the parking lot the car shut down and pulled to the right causing us to hit a telephone pole and totaling the car. It is my contention that power assist steering failed thus causing the accident. We where notified of the ignition recall had that taken care of in August of 2012. However chevy/gm contention is the ignition did not fail. The body shop mechanic and gm/chevy's own service advisor at the local dealership said that a catsophic malfunction took place causing the accident.

Power steering fails daily, lose all power assist. Why are 2009-12 covered under recall and 2008 is not? also brake rotors warp too easy.

Electric power steering fails completely causing the vehicle to be very difficult to steer and making the vehicle dangerous to operate at all speeds . Occurs intermittedly and unpredictably.

Power steering fails consistently every time car is driven. First started around 96,300 miles and has continued for the next 9000 miles or so with little change in frequency. Car is not safe for my wife to drive. Could completely fail in a curve or in a steeriing situation and cause a serious or fatal accident.

Power steering failure. Not covered under recall and gm refuses to include my vehicle in the extended warranty. Below excerpt from gm media center on 3/31/14 press release: "in addition, 309,160 non-turbocharged Chevrolet Hhrs from the 2006-2008 model years (and several hundred 2009 models) and 96,324 Saturn ions from the 2003 model year that are not subject to these recalls will be given lifetime warranties for replacement of the electronic power steering motor. " in addition to being a safety issue in a vehicle I transport children it is also cause me back pain having to muscle the car into turns.

"power steering" message appeared on the dash board and the power steering functionality failed. Almost caused an accident as it occurred during a tight turn. After car was restarted the problem resolved temporarily, but recurred shortly thereafter and continues to recur with high frequency.

I have a intermittent power steering failure the same as other Hhrs coverd on a recall why is mine not covered. Many people with same year have same problem.

The power steering failed in my car out of the blue while I was pulling out of the parking lot of a restaurant. It has happened approximately 6 times since then. Once I shut the car off and let it sit for awhile it goes off. The issue with the power steering randomly failing is very dangerous. If I was in mid turn the issue could have caused an accident. A recall was done on the chevy cobalt for the same issue and both cars use the same parts.

Power steering failed. At first it would go out but, when the car was restarted it would work again. Now it's just out. Very dangerous on the freeway!.

While driving power steering went out dash indicator stated power steering failure, pulled over shut off car inspected for any signs of problem, restarted car power steering was back, continued trip same thing occurred 15-20 minutes later same result same process reading a lot about recall on cobalt using same motor and recall in canada for same problem. Researching part to fix can;t wait until a us recall. On your sight many people are having the same issues as myself. Why no investigation puzzles me.

The failure increased he contact's steering ability however, the contact was able to regain control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic for inspection but the mechanic did not diagnose the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. Was driving down the highway and the power steering motor failed, causing steering to be very difficult. I have had this car just over a year now and everyday it's seems to get worse and worse and a whole lot more frequent. This is very dangerous especially when traveling on the highway. Definitely a serious safety concern.

While on vacation we were driving in washington DC traffic during mid day traffic congestion, the power steering failed in our car. We were lucky and were able to struggle to steer to get off to the edge of the highway and shut the car off. Upon restarting the power steering was working until several hours later again in busy traffic. This happened 3 more times in next two days before getting it back home & to the dealership, where it was determined to be a component that has been recalled in other models but not this one. I cannot understate the danger of losing power steering in any road conditions, putting myself, my family and other motorists in danger.

Power steering fails after vehicle is driven for approx 10 minutes. No warning, just goes out. Apparantly chevy cobalt uses same/simalar electric power steering motor which has been recalled. Unsure why no recall has been issued for the Hhr.

The power steering fails. There is no warning and it happens at any speed and any driving situation.
