1 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2020

I've had my car recalled for ignition switch, then another recall for the power steering module and now my power steering column is bad. All these parts are in the same area and I've heard many Hhr owners are having the same problem with their steering column, is there going to be a recall on this as well? I haven't even had this car all that long! anytime I drive on the highway it feels shaky and when turning left the the car jerks to the left. I've replaced everything in the suspension. Replaces sway bar, bushings, ball joints, control arms, brakes, roaters, springs, struts. . . Fixed it all! I do not feel save on this car.

4 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

So I purchased a 2008 Chevrolet Hhr and have constantly had trouble with it! here goes the last one! the esc message showed up in the dic with a message about the power steering! I took the car back to the dealership that I purchased it from. Was told that it was my steering angle position sensor and that I would have to replace the entire steering column. I have seen that this is a common problem with these vehicles! Chevrolet should be responsible for this and it should be recalled because there is no way that I'm paying $1400 to replace this! I purchased the best extended warranty and was told that this is not covered under them therfore it would be out of pocket! the car is extremely hard to steer while in this stage. So until a recall is made about this I would totally let every one I know to never purchase these vehicles! I will never ever purchase another car from that dealer!.

5 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2014

When vehicle is in motion there is a single "click" sound ( no "beep" or chime ) along with "power steering" displayed on the driver information center, and sudden failure of power steering. Manual steering and turning is then required until ignition can be turned off/on. Restarting ignition restores power steering until vehicle is in motion again. All vehicle services have been done by dealership where vehicle was purchased. Vehicle was taken to dealer service center for maintenance and power steering diagnosis. Vehicle is not part of any power steering recall to date. Service specialist said that the diagnosis was inconclusive. Service specialist claimed they were given a diagnostic code that they did not know. Service specialist suggested replacement of power steering rack, and if that does not solve the problem, replacement of entire steering column. Power steering was not repaired, as requested by vehicle owner, until a conclusive diagnostic service can be done.

6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

While driving my Hhr ss a service esc message appeared in the dic along with a chime like the dinging of no seat belt. Then a power steering message came after that. When this happens my steering wheel locks up and is hard to turn. I have heard that some of these steering columns have been recalled! why not the Hhr ss!! I have been told that it is the angle position sensor and the entire steering column has to be replaced! when this first accurd my vehicle did have a warranty but they said that because it was deemed an angle position sensor that warranty would not cover it even though the whole steering column has to be replace because of it being a ss. This is a major problem that I have seen alot of Hhr owners are having and this should be recalled!.

7 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2013

I could be sitting in line at a drive thru, turning slowly, or driving straight and I hear a click, and the "power steering" message displays, and then it becomes extremely difficult to steer. If I shut the car off it goes away. Also a major point is that it seems to be weather sensitive. Last winter it came on only two times and never happened again until about a few days ago when the weather got above 90 degrees here. On those days it is very hard to get rid of it. However,, ironically, on a day that was only 74 degrees it never came on! I am afraid that this will come on while driving down the interstate and I am put into a situation of having to maneuver quickly. . And I am sure that all the other people that have complained about this will agree that moving "quickly" isn't going to happen. Dealer tells me that the steering "module" is the entire steering column. . So repair cost is $900. I have 162,000 highway miles on my car and yes,, it's just an 08. If this part stayed in a faulty mode all the time I would say that it was a maintenance repair that I am liable for,, but with it going on and off and putting my safety at risk. . I feel this should be a manufacturer recall! they are the ones that decided to make this into an electronic component. . And a faulty one at that! do a search on line about "power steering" see how many other Hhr owners are having the exact same safety issue with way less miles on their cars. I was shocked and disgusted. I am not feeling the confidence to make chevy my next purchase. Why do the chevy cobalts have this recall. . But not Hhr owners?.

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2012

While driving on the road to work, the display message center said power steering then there was no power steering. It happened twice that day but after the car was shut off and cooled down it did not come on. The day after it happened again but stayed on longer. When the car was brought into the dealership on 12/31/12 they told us it could be the power steering motor or the steering column witch they both were not under warranty . It keep happening with the car for a week. I then brought my car to my mechanic on 1/4/13 and he replaced the power steering motor and it has not happen sense. Before I brought my car to him I went online to see if there was anyone else with the same problem and what they did it fix it. That's how I found out it wasn't just my car that this has happen to that there was a lot of other people who have had the same problem. Thankfully we were able to control the car and not get into an accident.

9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2011

I had just bought a chevy Hhr lt that had 30,000 miles on it from the Ford dealership ( this was a trade in). When I got home with the car, the front end made a jiggling sound. I took it to the chevy dealership and they had to replace the steering stabillizer shaft link and steering column , thank god this was covered by warranty.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2011

I have a 2008 chevy Hhr, and have had to do quite a bit of research to find out what the real issue here is. There are a lot of complaints on other web sites about the intermediate steering shaft going out every few thousand miles. The problem is, that no dealership can seem to diagnose the "clunking" noise coming from the drivers side front wheel and steering column. However the few shops that have figured it out are having to re-replace the part constantly. Gm has re-designed the part for other vehicles but not the Hhr. Mine has been replaced every 10,000 miles, 4 times now and it wears out after about 10k. Gm should create a better one for the Hhr and offer a recall since their part is defective.
