38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 03/28/2014

On 3/28/14 I was driving on highway at 6:30am and my car just turned off displaying engine power reduced. Taken to dealer and they claimed it was notice and now it been 4 times this has happened. Recently on 10/11/14 I was driving home from work and stop at a red ligth when my car began to shake and on dash display message read engine power reduce which at this point my car cut off and would not start back up. . I waited about 10 min and turned it on again. . This proble has been recurrent since then and now my child safety latches when put on will not let doors close and when moved to open position the safety lock will not reposition itself to the open position. Recently on 10/07/14 my service airbags message displayed for no reason. I have contacted dealership and they dont know why this is happening but wont trade my car for another and I have contacted gm and still no one has helped me these issues. 40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

Drove 1 mile. Turned engine off for 15 min. When restarted car it started shaking, warning message on dash read engine power reduced. Unable to drive more than 30 mph, with car still shaking drove 1 mile to my local mechanic, when mechanic restarted car and conducted dx test and reset code the problem resolved, no further incidents after miles of test driving. Hesitant to drive car any long distance for fear it may happen again and curious if other Hhr drivers have had this problem or if there was a silent recall. . Would like advice as to how to correct this issue, prevent a reoccurrence without expensive dealer costs and feel safe driving this vehicle. Please advise. Thank you.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/20/2013

Vehicle ran fine entire day(12-20-2013), I parked to shop with my wife at a local mall. When we were ready to leave the vehicle would turn over and then immediately shut off. This happened at least 10 times, my battery was beginning to drain so I stopped. My wife and I decided to continue our shopping and come back to vehicle later. Once again I started the vehicle and it immediately shut off. I had to call a towing service (aaa) to tow us to a local repair shop. The next day I was told the vehicle started fine and they could not find any problem. The mechanic did tell us that the vehicle had previous error codes from last night pointing to ignition and starter units, but they found no problems. I have received numerous recall notices from gm describing this very thing and have requested a full refund of my towing fees ($95. 00 invoice#73066) and trying to set up my repair since the recall notices went out in April 2014. I have not heard anything since. Gm case # 71-1317180641 operator (jim).

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/12/2013

Intermittently, engine temperature gauge will fail to register any temperature at all. This triggers the service engine soon dash notification. This happens at all speeds, varying times and no pattern.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

I have had my recall competed on my ignition switch, however, I am concerned because I still have an issue where I turn off the car and take the key out of the ignition, and either I hear the engine still run slightly, but more commonly the issue is that the door chimes as if I opened the door with the key still in the ignition (although it is not). I thought the replacement after this recall would fix the problem as I had previously brought it to the dealership and they could not "duplicate it" or see any immediate issues. Should I be concerned that this is still happening after the recall?.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/13/2013

While traveling on an interstate hgy, at apox, 65 to 70 mph I felt the car pull hard to the right, after going into a spin , it became hard to apply breaks and to try to correct or control the spin , there were vehicles including a semi all around my car. As I slid off the traveled portion of the hgy. My car impacted the wall head on. I was slammed into the dash . A moment later I calmed down and thought to myself why didn't the airbags deploy? I hit the wall at least at 35 mph, then I saw the car was not running, I saw the key had moved to off, I started the car and drove home.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/30/2013

Ignition switch can not be turned to off position. Cycled thru gears (automatic trans) several times thinking park sensor switch pin may be the problem - no effect. Aware there is a recall on this ignition - called hotline - 1st attempt, busy, 2nd attempt received recording. Called dealership of purchase, service dept closed at 1pm sat. Located fuse panel, removed engine control module fuse, this stopped eng. Elec power still on due to key stuck in on position, removed battery connection. Following Monday morning called dealership & reported problem, service dept verified recall & informed me replacement ignition cyclinder is taking in excess of 4 weeks delivery.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/23/2013

Was snowing got car high centered in driveway could not get ignition to turn off tried off and on for a hour finally frustrated went in home the next morning of course my battery was dead. This happened within the first two weeks of buying the car. Then dealership came out got vehicle started took to shop. I got the car back a week later. Then was driving car and on the weekend on my way to work message on dash says reduced engine power and would not let me go more than 30 mph. The roads were completely dry so road conditions were not the issue. I again called the guy who sold me the car he switch me over to the mechanic who said bring the car in next time it does that otherwise they wont be able to tell what went wrong. Then the next week my front tire was wobbling like it was going to come off and it was not the lug bolts because I checked them so back to the shop again. They said some bolt was loose under the hood to the front end and I should be fine. Then I believe it was a week or two later the ignition locked up on me again and they blamed that on me. I have had the car for a year and owe more than it is worth so cannot trade it in because I owe three times more than it is worth. A month ago again the message came on the dash reduce engine power on my way to work live 11 miles out of town so drove on the shoulder of the road with my flashers on to let other cars by. Among that I had the windshield leek water in my floor on passenger side every time it rained. The dealership had put in a new windshield and did'nt get part under the hood back on correctly. I could go on and on but bottom line after buying the car it was in the shop three times before I even got plates for it. I have been really frustrated with the car but not much that I know to do since owe too much on it.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/16/2013

I pulled in my driveway and put the car in park and could not turn off the key. I tried to everything, steering wheel, key, shifter, brakes, etc and I could not turn the car off or get the key out. I had to pull a fuse to get the car to shut down. This problem is similar, if not exactly, the same of other complaints on this type car. I will probably have to have it towed and repaired by a dealer at great expense. Not good for gm.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

For the last year, the traction control light has stayed on as well as the engine light. Shifting is difficult and I am afraid that it will effect the transmission and that the transmission will eventually be destroyed. There are several websites where other people are having the same problems but to my knowledge gm has not recalled these vehicles for this problem.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/19/2012

Key binds in ignition, engine will sometimes continue to run after key is removed from ignition, sometimes key binds and unable to start car, dealer states unable to duplicate this issue and will not repair.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/13/2012

This is an ongoing safety problem that chevy/gm doesn't care to worry about. My cars steering wheel shakes when I am driving. Sometimes to the point of the car to be uncontrollable in addition to this the traction control light goes on along with the engine light. I have brought this in to the dealer every two months and have been told a combination of what the dealers mechanics feel the problem is. I have had steering columns replaced, cam shaft solenoids, bushings, rotors. The list goes on. Nothing has fixed the issue. Today bringing back to the dealer I am now told that I am lucky to be alive as both control arms in the front are seconds from breaking along with the links that keep the car stable. . The mechanic shared that had I hit a pothole I would have died as the car would have spun out of control and impossible to recover as I would have no way to control the steering wheel. Now having two kids, and this being an ongoing problem one would think that chevy/gm would pay for the replacement of their faulty part. I cant afford a new car, and I can no longer afford to pay for gm's mistakes. My car is paid off and now I don't feel safe driving it. To "fix it" and I say this loosely it will cost 1,800 out of my pocket.

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/11/2012

I went to a meeting and when I parked and tried to turn the car off, it wouldn't let me turn it off. I am a female and didn't know what to do , so I had to call my husband and he came and had to disconnect the battery so it would shut off. Then we had to call a wrecker service and have it towed to a dealership to have it repaired.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/25/2012

I drove my vehicle to new jersey for vacation but came back to virginia within two days. Upon my arrival in virginia, I repacked my bags and headed to charlotte, nc. All the driving that I was doing was highway driving. To new jersey I drove I-81 north and I-78 east. To charlotte, nc I drove 220 south and I-85 south. After I got off on I-85 south to go back to the hotel on the way up the hill towards the hotel the car stopped moving forward. It would rev up when pushing on the accelerator but would not move forward. The car however would shift gears and go in reverse. I parked the car in a parking lot and had called my insurance company to have the car towed to the local Chevrolet dealership. The dealership determined that the transmission failed but could not give me a determination as to why it failed. Had the transmission failed as I was speeding down I-85 south there would have been a serious accident. Additionally, this morning (August 22nd , 2012) the car would not start. The lights inside the car would come on such as the gauge lights, radio, etc but the engine would not turn over. I had the car towed to the midpoint Chevrolet dealership and it was determined that the starter was bad and thus had to be replaced. Also, the morning of November 24th upon returning to my car from a night out the car would not start again. This time no lights would come on. The only indication that there was at least some power was the indicator light on my car charger. I contacted my insurance company and received a jump start from a local tow service and the vehicle has been running smoothly ever since. This has occurred twice in the last few months but there is no indication as to what may be draining the battery's power. I have had the battery checked twice and on these two occasions and is deemed to still be good.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/23/2012

I was driving my vehicle on the 401 on ramp (going 35km/hr) it was a rainy day. I randomly and all of a sudden lost power, including my power steering. No lights, no warnings, just gone. I couldn't turn the wheel to continue with the curved on ramp. I'm not that strong and without power steering I couldn't do it as well. As I wasn't able to do much I hit the break after I was already mid air from hitting the curb and going straight. I landed perpendicular on the 401. Taking up all of lane 1 and part of lane 2. Lucky traffic stopped before hitting my car. This was terrifying. No warning but no power and whack goodbye power steering.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/09/2012

After parking in the drive way around 11:30 pm the ignition key would not turn off. I tried to use the release plunger but ended up removing the lower steering column cover and forcing it over the key. Then I pulled the wire harness off which shut off the engine. I was able to start the car by putting the wire back on and twisting the key. The dealer said the key was bent and charged me $400 to replace the switch. They obviously used pliers to remove the key. While in their waiting room I read an article in a March issue of motor magazine that said this is a common problem for several cars including Hhr's and they are not sure why. I feel this should have been on recall and not be charged to us. The keys may be too soft or it was a manufacturers defect in the first place.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/17/2012

The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Hhr. While driving approximately 20 mph, the contact noticed the esc warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. Suddenly the speed decreased and the abs began to activate. In addition, the vehicle surged forward with excessive vibration. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and then towed to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician was unable to detect a trouble code. The failure occurred six times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer whenever the failure occurred. The repairs performed on the vehicle consisted of recalibrating the steering sensor and replacing the yaw sensor. The electronic brake control model was also replaced. The failure continued to occur after the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The vehicle was not repaired for the recent failure. The approximate failure mileage was 23,658.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/14/2012

Key stuck in ignition after parking. Could not turn car off and could not remove key from ignition. More specifically, pulled into driveway, put vehicle in park and could not turn off vehicle or remove key from ignition switch opening. The key was stuck in the ignition and I could not pull it out of the ignition switch. Had to drive the car to the dealership where they removed gas pump fuse and car stopped running. Dealership today (1-15-2012) confirms there was a failure in the ignition switch and it needs to be replaced. I have a chevy cobalt 2009 which has a recall on the ignition switch for this exact problem. These are basically the same kinds of car and so there should also be a recall on the Hhr ignition switch, but apparently there is not one. Dealership says there is no recall on the Hhr ignition switch, but there is on the cobalt ignition switch.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

I put the transmission into park and attempted to turn off the car and remove the key to go into a store. I could not turn the ignition switch to off or remove the key. I drove the car home and parked. I could still not turn the ignition switch to off or remove the key. Numerous attempts of putting car into reverse, or drive and into park did not solve the problem. The key was trapped in the ignition switch! called onstar and was forwarded to customer service; tow truck was called. Tow truck delivered car to dealership with engine still running. Problem diagnosed in ignitition key cylinder which was replaced.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/08/2011

My 2010 Hhr has experienced an ignition issue as well. I cannot get the key to turn back to the off position. I got home from work at midnight, put the car in park and when I tried to shut the car off it would not turn back. The only option I had was to pull the ecm fuse and disconnect the battery (or let it run out of gas). The gear shifter will allow me to shift between all gears but it won't turn off. All the electrical stay on, I have only owned this car for 3 months.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/20/2011

My 2010 chevy Hhr has experienced an ignition issue. The key, when the car is set to park, will not disengage. It remains on, with the only option being to let the car run out of gas/the battery to drain. The key will turn (as if to start the car), and the gear can be shifted from park to reverse, neutral, etc. , but will not turn off. All systems stay on, potentially burning out electrical components or causing permanent engine damage. The only way to safely address the immediate issue is to disengage the fuses under the steering wheel, which many consumers may be unable to do.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/16/2011

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Hhr. While the contact was driving approximately 70 mph when the vehicle decelerated to 40 mph without warning. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer twice for the failure. The technician was unable to duplicate the problem but the vehicle was not repaired. On a separate occasion, the air bags failed to deploy when the vehicle was involved in a crash. The vehicle was destroyed. The front seat driver sustained minor injuries to the right hand. In addition, the front seat passenger and and rear seat passenger both suffered minor head injuries. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 18,000. The VIN was unavailable.

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/14/2011

My clutch went out and the car stopped working gas I was driving along the highway. It was not during a shift, just acceleration. The clutch did the exact same thing on December 23, 2013 (mileage about 115,000). I have driven manual transmissions previously and have gone well over 100k miles without replacing the clutch and I am now on my 3rd clutch. I know there is a TSB on a possible bad flywheel (which was not replaced either time), but a clutch to go out twice on a car that has seen for the last 55k almost all highway miles indicates there is a problem with the car.
