7 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/25/2012

I drive a 2010 chevy Hhr. I noticed not to long after I purchased it new the door(drivers side passenger) would not open from outside or even inside when I would crawl inside and try to get it open. It would only do it on occasion. Now it has ceased to happen at all in the past 6 months. On may 25th of this year the passenger side did the same thing. My mother and I were traveling to my daughters graduation and it completely locked her inside. She could not get the door opened at all even though I hit the unlock button and she tried many times to do the same thing on her side. The actual door lock was in the up position showing that the door appeared to be in the unlock position but when she went for the handle it was still locked. This happened several times on this day. It even set my alarm system on my car off because after it refused to unlock it eventually did and then refused to lock back. I go around after getting out of the vehicle making sure all my doors were secured and it was not locked even though the latch was in the down position and appeared to be secured. Is this a computer problem with these vehicles? I have read about problems with the older model Hhr's having this problem but not on a newer one of the year I have. What I want to know is can someone access my computer board in my vehicle and set those locks to mess up? it was almost like someone was maybe wanting in my vehicle and what a better way to do it than to mess with the locking system. I would have never known my vehicle was unlocked had I not went over and physically checked it that day because like I said it appeared to be locked. The lock actually went down when I hit my key fob to lock my doors that day. Weird thing is. . . It hasn't done it since then. . . . How does a vehicle fix itself?.

8 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Our Hhr's lock/latch system stopped working completely on 4/18/2012. We started having problems in March 2012 and had our mechanic look at it, but he couldn't get the problem to duplicate, so he cleaned the key lock and lubed it. The car is permanently locked. We don't have a key lacentry on this vehicle, it is a manual lock. We now have to incur a lock smith and/or towing bill + a repair bill for the mechanic to fix what he believes is a failure/breakdown of the latch system. We have an extended warranty, but we're not sure if the warranty covers this part; even if they do we still have a $100 deductible.

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

Key stuck in iginition in 2010 Hhr. Could not turn car off or remove key. Had to take to dealership to have a new iginition put in. This is a know problem by GMC, but they will not cover repairs or issue recall. The iginition switckes they use or defected and should be recalled. Should not fail on new vehicles. Could be a danger and cause harm.

15 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Both key fobs began working intermittently, finally failing completely. Problem began around 38,000 mileage. Complete failure around 40,000 mileage. Now key in door no longer works (only one key entry on entire car) so taking to dealer tomorrow. Mileage around 45,000.

16 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/23/2011

Bought a used 2010 Chevrolet Hhr on July 09, 2011 from a major dealer. On July 23,2011, drove two miles to super market. The engine would not shut off and I could not remove the key from the ignition. Finally had to disconnect battery to stop the engine from running. Had the vehicle towed to Chevrolet dealer and was told the ignition lock cylinder was broken. Fortunately, the vehicle was still under factory warranty and was repaired at no cost. The service advisor said this occurs frequently with this car and would no doubt happen again. Great to know it will happen again, only you don't know where you will be when it happens or what time of day or night.

17 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/10/2011

Originally the passenger interior door handle broke leaving us unable to exit the vehicle without opening the door using the outside handles. Now the driver interior door handles broke and we cannot exit the vehicle without lowering the window and opening the doors from the outside. This has to be a safety issue because we could potentially be trapped inside the car in an accident.

18 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/08/2011

Drivers door is broken, have to roll window down to get out, also, remote is not working, I have to lock/unlock with the horn honking everytime I park. After doing a search online, I found that a lot of other people have had the same problem, and it seems to stem from the fact, that chevy has decided not to be built like a rock, instead, built with plastic. (can you even recycle it?).

19 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/04/2011

The ignition interlock cylinder in our 2010 Chevrolet Hhr failed and the key became stuck. We were unable to remove the key or turn it to the "off" position. I had to remove the fuel pump fuse and battery to shut the vehicle off. This also disabled the airbags in the vehicle. Gm stated they knew there was a problem and have issued "advisories" but no recall so the customer is responsible.

20 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/24/2011

The front passenger's door latch broke under normal wear and tear because it is made of plastic. You cannot open the door from the inside once it is broken, it has to be open from the outside or you have to be tall enough to reach over to the outside door handle and open the door. Lot of complaints because the only way to repair broken handle is to replace the entire door panel a cost of over $250.

21 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/15/2011

Inside door handle on my 2006 Chevrolet Hhr broke off when I opened the door. This creates a safety issue for the driver as the door cannot be opened from the inside without lowering the left front window and opening with the outside handle. If the electrical system is damaged then the window will not open. The driver would then need to crawl over the center console to the right door or the front seat to exit the cars rear door. In a collision or fire the driver may be injured, panicked or confused and not be able to exit the vehicle. The plastic handle should be replaced with a more substantial metal one.

22 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/08/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that the driver side door handle fractured. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the entire driver side door panel needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The current and failure mileage was approximately 63,000.

23 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that the driver side door handle fractured from the vehicle while attempting to exit. The contact was unable to open the driver side window and had to climb to the passenger side door to exit the vehicle. The contact spoke with a dealer and was told that the entire door panel would have to be replaced and even although the vehicle was under warranty, the door handle was not and would be the liability of the contact. The failure and current mileage was 72,000.

24 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 03/07/2011

Driver side internal door handle broke off leaving the door inoperable unless the electric window is opened and the hand put over the door and opened on the outside of the car. This is also a hazard because if the car battery is dead then how do you get out of the car?.

25 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/19/2011

I have a 2006 Hhr. While trying to exit out the passenger side door the door handle broke in my hand so now anyone sitting there has to open the window an reach out and open the door (or someone has to open for them). The other problem I just encountered is that the "door open" message and dinging noise keeps coming up while I am driving. The door is not open! also, the radio won't shut off when you turn the car off and open the door. When pushing the inside lock/unlock button on the driver's side, all the doors lock except the driver's side. It goes down, but comes back up. My mechanic thinks it is a door latch problem. Also the alarm goes off by itself after locking the car with the remote. I was awoken at 3:00 am to the sound of my car going off, this has never happened before! gm needs to do some recalls on these items, as I see a lot of complaints concerning the same items.

26 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/15/2011

Driver door interior door handle snapped off. Dealer will not help. Entire door panel must be replaced. Cannot guarantee recurrence.

27 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/10/2011

The interior door handles on the 2006 Chevrolet Hhr fell off. The only way to fix it is to replace the entire door panel just for the cheap plastic handle for approximately $500. 00. If I was in an accident and the car would not start again, I could not get out of the car through the driver's side because I would not be able to roll down the window to open the door from the outside. Or if the car were on fire, I simply would not be able to escape. This needs to be a recall item as this is a huge safety factor. A bigger safety factor that the latch on the pop up middle console on the chevy Hhr that was recalled back in 2008 (I think). There are blogs all over the internet of people like me who are experiencing the same problem. I am a single working girl who simply cannot afford a $500 interior door panel replacement for a cheap plastic handle because this is not reasonable. I tried to get chevy to replace it and they simply said they would give me a $40 discount. That is ridiculous!!! I bought the car be cause it was economical and not one thing about this replacement sounds economical. This is a safety hazard and could lead to a death.

28 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/30/2010

I am an owner of 2007 Hhr with 51,000 miles. I locked my car went into the store came out and the driver side door would not open. The remote button would work the lock up and down button but still the door would not open from the outside handle. I then put the key in the door and still it would not open. The lock flips up and down with the key and the remote but the door handle will not open the door. The handle is not broken. So I entered the car by the passenger side door, crawled over the seat and shift level to get behind the wheel to drive home. After arriving home I could not get out of my drivers side door. It would not open from the inside, so I had to crawl over the shift and seat to the passenger side to exit the vehicle. I have a torn muscle in my arm so it hurt to do all this. I took the car to the dealer and they replaced the latch inside the door for $397. That's outrageous. That was 7 days ago. Today, I went to town with my husband and the passenger side door would not open. Now I could not exit on the passenger side. This is crazy. Same thing on the passenger door. Will not open from the inside or outside and I had to crawl over to get out. This is a severe safety issue and for people who have disabilities it is definitely a safety issue. Also, if we were to have any accident or emergency we would not be able to get out. What if a child were in that seat. The dealership said they did not have anyone with this issue but after looking on the internet it is a very big issue and needs to be recalled to fix it before someone is killed or seriously hurt by not being able to open the door to get out in any situation. The door will not open from inside handle or outside handle so you are stuck inside or locked outside.

29 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/25/2010

I own a 2006 chevy Hhr lt. Thanksgiving day I went to move my car out of the driveway and when I tried to get out of the car the interior door handle on the driver door came off in my hand. I have done my research and found this is a common problem with this vehicle. I even walked up to another Hhr I saw on a parking lot and it had the same problem. My safely concern is that I cannot open the door without rolling down my window and reaching outside the car to the exterior handle. If I was in an accident and had a electrical failure I could not exit the car because I could not roll down the window. Everything I have found in my research is that Chevrolet is not recgonizing this as a real problem and from what I have seen/read they have been unwilling to correct the problem when it occurs or help the vehicle owners in any way. I have checked on the repair and found that the door handle itself can not be replaced that you have to buy an entire door panel for over $400 and that is just the part, no labor. How can this be a known problem, and Chevrolet not stand behind their product? the inability to exit my vehicle in the aftermath of an accident greatly concerns me and should concern Chevrolet especially with the multiple complaints I have read online of this issue occurring.

30 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

2006 Chevrolet Hhr interior door handle failures. In my instance the plastic handle that is used to open the door on the drivers side broke off. This is a widely complained about issue on the web. If you google "hhr drivers side interior door handle broken" you get 1000's of people discussing this issue. The cost to repair is very high and people are not doing it. Chevy does not sell just the plastic part, they require you to purchase an entire assembly, the cost runs nearly $600 with labor for a plastic part. The issue is that dealerships do not stock this part, they need to order it and it takes time, this is a safety issue as the only way to exit the car is to open the door from the outside, so that requires rolling a window down and opening it from the outside. If you needed to exit the vehicle in a hurry, such as after an accident, you would not be able to do so. This is a great concern. Besides the fact that this is being reported as a problem and chevy is not trying to rectify the situation, or to even provide the part outside of purchasing the entire assembly.

31 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/24/2010

Inside driver side handle broke off, unable to open door from the inside the electronic window must be opened and door opened from the outside.

32 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/22/2010

My 2008 Hhr looses power steering while turning, then suddenly returns power causing to oversteer. This is a sever safety issue as it is a come and go type problem,I do not drive during inclement weather fearing body damage to persons and vehicles other than myself. I have taken to dealer only to be told we can not determine the problem as it is intermittent. Also the tire pressure display is on even tho all tire pressure is correct, not sure if they are related to "electric" power steering. Would like this as a record if any persons are injured or worse killed due to the possible short circuit in powersteering. How many people have to leave the vehicles at home after spending all their money on them for this to be a recall?.

33 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/10/2010

Driver side inside door handle bfoke off, need to open window and reach outside to open door.

34 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/17/2010

Chevrolet Hhr-2007 with 57,000 miles - the inside door latch on the driver's side broke. I found out that the hinge on the latch is plastic and to repair it I have to replace the entire door panel . I am partially disabled and recovering from knee replacement. This is a severe design problem. Many people who buy this car purchase it because it is easy to get in if you have ambulatory problems. Please help me and other consumers.

35 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

Chevy Hhr 2006 drivers side interior door handle broke off in hand during normal use. Made of cheap plastic. Auto maker states that the only way to repair is to completely remove the door and pay. All of this for a piece of plastic which should cost pennies to replace? I suffer from neck pain and have trouble rolling the window down to reach out and open the door. They have to fix this at their cost. This is obviously no fault of the owners and only due to faulty (plastic) equipment they are using.
