The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle started to shake violently when the brakes were applied. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. However they did advised the contact by phone that the vehicle could have developed tire flat spots and the rotors could have seized due to the vehicle seating for two months on dealers lot waiting for parts in order to repair recall NHTSA campaign id number 14v047000(air bags, electrical system). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 89,551.

On several occasions while driving the vehicle the electric power steering failed causing my son to have to pull over quickly as it was quite difficult for him to control the car. During one event he also described what seemed to be loss of brakes as he said he had the brake to the floor and was not stopping; he had to use the emergency brake; this occurred at the same time as the power steering loss. He has had several instances where he would try to accelerate without affect.

Driving straight ahead on dry asphalt street at about 28 mph. The brakes began applying themselves very hard over and over and over. Made car buck and nearly stopped me dead in traffic. Dashboard message center said "esc active". It was the electronic stability control activating itself for no reason at all. I fortunately know where the esc off switch is, pressed and held it in until "esc off" came up on the message center. This halted the rogue braking. If I had been on the freeway, a total loss of would seem likely.

Vehicle was exiting parkway when loss of braking and steering occurred causing vehicle to collide with guardrail nearly head on. Air bags did not deploy. Major damage to front of vehicle as well as rear of vehicle as it swung around and struck the guardrail a second time with the rear of the vehicle before coming to rest across the roadway.
Vehicle was sitting while running my husbands knee bumped the key fob and the ignition switched to off. I checked and found there is very little resistance to the key turning off.
The esc light cae on and it became difficult to steer, turn, and jerking when I apply the brakes. I've taken my Hhr to the dealership on 3 and 4 of April 2014 for software update. Back to dealership on 7,8,9, for computer, however there was no additional charge. 17 April same issues as the 3 rd. 21 st to tweek the esc problems. I have been experiencing problems with this vehicle every since I got it. Now with me reading these recalls come to find out this car is not safe at all. When I get to 60mph my car shakes. I thought it was the breaks but I have brand new break put on. It still shakes when trying to ride on the highway. Is anyone else having these issues?.
This has happened a few times with this vehicle, usually at speeds in excess of 50 mph. When being cut off by another vehicle, hitting the brake hard and steering away from the offending vehicle cause the Hhr to fishtail and get very squirrely. It just starts going back and forth in a rocking motion and only settles down by taking my foot off the brake. It feels like the car could easily go into a roll over. I have had it inspected by les schwab and they replaced the struts and shocks, but saw no real problems. This latest incident occurred many months after that work was completed, so that apparently was not part of the problem. It will also occasionally give me a shimmy in the steering wheel when decelerating from a moderate speed. However, that does not occur most of the time. . . Rotors appear to be fine.
While driving on a wet road at 30 to 35 miles per hour. The car shuts off when I topped a small hill and I lost all power. No place to pull off the road. I placed the car in park and turn the key to off and restarted. The engine light came on and the message displayed was engine power reduction. I drove 20 to 25 miles per hour to my destination the car would only go 30 miles per hour and the car shifted roughly and jumped. A nice guy there, turned the key to the on position 3 times before the engine light would go off. Called dealership and they said bring it in, I already had the recall letter and ask him if it could be related to the recall (as I am on a fixed income) he said no and it would cost 150. 00 I have not had any other episodes and I hope I don't it was very scary. Glad I was going slow and not a busy road. I had previously removed the key fob and was only using my ignition key as per the recall letter instruction. Waiting for the next letter for the recall and hope the fix prevents it from happening again.
My car started with the ignition switch back in October with the key not shutting off the car and having to disconnect the battery to shut it off, took it into the dealer and they fixed it, but now things are getting scary. Every other day my car is telling me that the abs systems needs fixed and that the traction control needs serviced. The breaks were replaced in December of 2013 and we were told that there is nothing else wrong with the car and now this. . Took it back to the dealer and they informed us that there is nothing wrong with it, but the lights come on and go off for no reason. . The passenger seat belt locks all the time and even after you unlatch it, it stays locked for some time. I am so frustrated over this issue and can't get any answers on it.

Fuel leak in front of drivers side rear wheel. This is completely unacceptable in an 8 year old vehicle. The fuel line corroded and leaked heavily, cost me $254. 22 to replace this faulty gas line. I am obviously not the only person this has happened to. I have also had all the other typical problems such as the key will not release from ignition, bad rotors, loose front end bushings and excessive front end vibration over typical street cracks. Broken drivers side interior door handle, cracked windshield. . . . . .
Steering shakes violently when braking from 45 mph and slower causing the car to try to change position in the lane. There is a noise of something loose in the left front when braking or hitting bumps or on rough roads. Brake pedal pulses. All this happens when driving under normal driving condition. This is an unsafe condition and needs the NHTSA attention.
The srs light was red and stood lit for one month and then it went away, I have 3 children under 17 years of age and this problem just worries me and has me worried about the safety of my family while in this car. We had the ignition replace by the dealer about a year ago, because my wife could not turn off the car. No other problems reported by my wife. We love our Hhr. Great family car. We might need to go bigger since our growing family. Hope this problem of srs gets fixed or does not become a future problem.
Engine shut off first time resulting in minor contact with garage door while pulling into driveway. Shut down 2 more times at low speeds and a 4th time at 50mph in a cement barriered construction zone on a bridge, no road shoulder, due to speed at shut down was able to coast through construction to roadside. Ignition control module was replaced after incident, however shutdowns continued after. Drove car with single key only since ignition control module was replaced, however my vehicle stills shuts down! it has been included in the recall but it still is not safe and I don't believe will be safe after recall repair! I don't want to wait until I kill someone to have the gov, gm, or anyone care, that the cars that are actually shutting down need to be taken off the road and replaced! please someone help the car owners like me! help us feel safe again and not as though we are playing russian roulette every time we drive our cars! I am begging someone at this agency to please make them replace our known defective and unsafe cars! my car continues to shutdown after removal of all things on the key! help! I have 2 small kids and have to keep them safe!.
2013, when applying breaks on grade steering wheel violenty shaking. June 2013 if applying full breaks, steering wheel would also pull. Could not control vechile with shaking and pulling. Drove ith hazards in slow lane at lesser speeds. Very bad situation. This siuation occured again this year (2014 may) while again on a grade. The shaking is voilent it very difficult to control the vechile. Drove with hazard again in slow lane. . This is very dangerous and worse when turning. Good wayto kill yourself and others. I was at the dealer havign my ignition replaced and they said its normal and the rotors shoudl be turned. I explain that the car was barely controllable. No standard rotor problem should make a car shake and pull that violently. These cars should be taken off the road. They are also no very compitent in windy conditions. I live in a mild climate zone and have driven many vechiles and my fisrt winter in the card was very very uncomfortable. That and the windows being copped are a huge visibilty issue. A design like this should have never been approve. Add to that poor parts to save money and these are just not safe. Not safe to those that own them or others. Also front end has ongoing front end suspension problem. I had perviosu issues with the radiator and guard that shoudl have been installed by the dealer but was not. As well as fauly door handles. Reapir bu dealer but now the door leaks. These are samll things compared to the othes. I would like the drvign commision to do the right thing and have the company buy these cars back. . I appreciate the new iginition but that does not hing to help the breaking issues they call normal.
Developed serious wheel wobble when breaking.
The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that the brakes malfunctioned, causing the contact to crash into the rear of another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact suffered injuries to the chest and both legs. The vehicle was destroyed and a police report was filed at the scene. The manufacturer was not notified. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The failure mileage was 51,300.
Letter fwd fm fmcsa concern the safety of his 2009 Chevrolet Hhr ss, brakes are extremely hard causing difficulty in stopping vehicle at times, inquiring why there wasn't a recall (enclosures not imaged fwd to nvs-200) the consumer stated when he recently pulled away from a curb behind another vehicle that stopped at a crosswalk, he came within an inch of rear-ending the vehicle, because the brake was extremely hard, which made it difficult to stop. The consumer experienced the same scenario again, but it involved a pedestrian who was crossing the street in the crosswalk. The consumer stated a technical service bulletin was issued by Chevrolet, but not a recall. The dealer informed the consumer the cost to install an auxiliary vacuum booster pump was $1200. 00.
After abiding by the recall to change the ignition switch, the car starts freaking out randomly. The dash lights start going on and off. Loose power steering, power brakes and the car just stops. You can be going 70 miles an hour down the highway and the car just gives out. The dealership refuses to fix it unless I am willing to pay all the fees. I had a second dealership replace some fuses but after 2 days it started doing it again. After the first episodes, I called and opened a ticket with Chevrolet, but because the dealership I used didn't want to mess with the car any more they were not very helpful. Now I am driving a death trap because I can't afford a new car and I won't let my children drive or be in the car.
I purchase the vehicle in February 2013 with 54000 miles on it. There was a shaking in the front end while braking. I was insured at the dealership that it was because it has new brakes and if it does not stop bring it back and they will fix it. I brought it back and they rotated the rotors. It worked well for about two weeks. The rotors started shaking again after only two weeks. So I brought it back again and they put new rotors on the vehicle. It has started again with the new rotors. This time it started with in a month. My car while breaking will sometime feel like there is ice under it on dry roads. I am going to take it today to big o tires and have a friend work on it that I trust. The car just hit 70000 miles. I have done only one oil change and taking the car in three times for wrapped rotors. There is something wrong that they are just ignoring. I stated that I took it in twice I took it to pinegar chevorlet in branson, mo where I purchased the vehicle. Here is some specific information on service dates and mileage purchase of vehicle: 02/14/2013 52534 miles 1st repair: 04/22/2013 rotated rotors 56032 miles 2nd repair: 08/24/2013 61,107 replaced rotors went and talked to pinegar Chevrolet told then that they are vibrating again on 10/26/2013 65777 miles. Blammed the whole thing on my driving. The rotors are thinner then they are in the new cars. They do it to be more fuel efficient. It will cost about 100 to rotate the rotors. There is something wrong with my braking system and they are just ignoring it.
After backing out of a parking space, stopping, and proceeding forward I attempted to again apply the brake after about 150 feet of moving forward. The brake pedal was hard but the brakes were not being applied at all. It made no difference even when applying much additional pressure to the pedal. It felt like the abs was preventing the brakes from working as I coasted to a stop. After a brief amount of time the brakes seemed to work normally. It has now happened two additional times after the car has been sitting for a number of hours.
I had to replace left and right control arms on this vehicle, brakes constantly can't unlock doors from inside, have to roll down window to unlock, now having engine problems and one of the control arms going bad again. Plus something is causing rain to get in my car somewhere, because when it rains at smells mildewy.
On two occasions within the 3yr/36,000mile warranty, the esc and antilock temporarily went out with dashboard notification. No esc problems since, so it was not taken to dealership. In the meantime, we have a power steering problem that only occurred once during the warranty period at 35,000 miles. Now, at 40,000, the problem has worsened so the power steering fails every trip. The car steers hard when this occurs, obviously. Restarting the car resolves the problem for a few minutes.
This car is a safety hazard going down road. I bought it new in 2008. Rotors & brakes are horrible - have to have repaired multiple times. Bearings have went out, replaced & one went out again. I spend approx 1200 dollars a year just to get shaking out of front end, turning rotors & tires. But that isn't really the problem I am reporting: was having trouble with ignition switch - it was recalled - took it to dealer to have it replaced - understand that I was having no problems with car at this time - upon leaving dealers and within 15 miles power steering light comes on & I lose power steering. Now my power steering goes out unexpectedly whenever it decides to. Took back to dealer because I felt this was something they messed up and was told this is just a problem with Hhrs and that power steering motor needs to be replaced. After researching this. . . It is very common with this car, along with brake issues, severe shaking in front, bearings going out and many other problems that I have also had. I realize my car is high mileage, I work as a home health nurse & use this car for work, but I do keep it maintained. I hope that I will be able to get into different car before I get in accident in this one.
On-going despite several repair and/or replacement attempts. The rotors have been replaced four times. I just did the rotors and brakes 3 weeks ago. When it is cold the suspension seems like the car is going to fall apart. The power steering comes and goes. The first time it happen I was trying to make a u-turn and was almost rammed from the passenger side door. These cars are a death trap. All my issues has been going on for about nine months.
Car has 38,000 miles at this time. Since 5,000 miles the car when brakes are applied the car would pulsate and shake at the steering wheel and front end. The higher the speed the more severe. This seems to be a characteristic of the model. I am reading on edmonds car forum about thousands of people with the same problems. The rotor warps prematurely causing the issues. The rotors are clearly not the grade needed for the car. Gm has never addressed the complaints and should be pressured to recall the model and replace the deficient rotors.
On approximately March 26 2012 at night on a trip from phoenix az to reno nv my vehicle low beam headlamps went out, I drove from kingman az to indian springs nv with just my highbeams after stopping in indian springs and trying every knob and switch in the vehicle the front low beams came on. Then in the month of April the low beams went out all together and after being in the shop for 2 days it was diagnosed with a relay problem and repair was made and I had low beams again, but now the horn doesn't function and after being pulled over by the police I was advised that my taillights are out. Both problems possibly related to a fuse or relay problem but I haven't had it in the shop yet. Now when I purchased the veh in September of 2011 I noticed that the vehicle would shutter to a stop when applying the brakes, sometimes violently. Had a brake job done in March and was advised that the front rotors were warped. Had them repaired and everything was fine until approximately June 1st when the shuttering/vibrating started up again and the sometimes violently at that. I am really concerned when I apply the brakes that something may break lose when I apply the brakes. I've read on the internet many complaints from Chevrolet Hhr (different year models) owners of the same complaints and that after having the brakes worked on that the vibrating/shuttering comes back within 3 months. Thank you. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Hhr. While applying the brakes at a speed of 25 mph, the contact noticed that the front end of the vehicle began to shake violently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the front rotors were replaced. The failure recurred two weeks after the repair. The recent failure was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were 59,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph and lightly depressing the brakes, the brakes did not respond. The vehicle would not stop and the contact steered the vehicle onto grass and continued to depress the brakes, but to no avail. The vehicle did not come to a stop until crashing into a tree. The contact sustained a fractured ankle and the vehicle was destroyed. The failure and the current mileages were 44,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the brakes was depressed and the pedal went to the floorboard abnormally. The failure caused the driver to crash into another vehicle from the rear. The contact stated that the air bags did not deploy and the driver was injured. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop and deemed as destroyed. The police stated that the air bags should have deployed and the insurance company planned to inspect the vehicle. The failure and the current mileage was 106,000.
Brake pedal assembly: at the upper brake pedal, at the cross tube there was a defective weld, only welded on one side and the weld did not adhere to cross bar. The weld did not penetrate metal, causing the pedal to slide to the left.
This happened when I first bought the car, we could not get the key out of ignition and it would not stay park. So I called dealer and got nowhere, I even made a complaint on here I believe stating someone is going to get hurt. Still to this day I can put the car in and out of gear without having to apply the brake!!! gm has known about this for a long time and there should be a recall. My car didnt have a warranty when I purchased it so they are no help. So I was able to take the shifter console apart and see what was happening, I got my key out and put it together and it did it again and again and again. We have just learned how to manipulate the car so we can drive it.
When braking to come to a stop the brakes/wheels shutter and shake violently.
