2 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2016

Multifunction switch randomly fails to turn on low beam in motion and stopped. To operate the vehicle with some lights on at night, left hand has to hold down the high beam as it fails to stay on. Steering wheel must then be operated with only when hand. Replacing the the multi function switch fixes the problem until it fails again. Averaging 6 months between failures and have replaced the switch 3 times already.

3 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2016

I bought my 2004 Chevrolet Impala (3800 v6 engine) new, which has now less than 12,000 miles, & I drove primarily for running errands. One month ago, its body computer memory went bonkers. The day after I returned after xmas, I went to get grocery. As the car was normal the previous day, I did not expect any problem. However, upon finishing shopping 30 minutes later, I found the car (1) honking non-stop, (2) its dome lights could not be turned off, (3) the ¿door ajar¿ warning jingled all the way ¿ even though I stopped by roadside to ensure all doors were closed. On top of that, (4) the turning signals (both left & right) stopped working. About 5 minutes after returning home and locking up the car, (5) the honking/dome lights/door warning started again. Although I reset the control panel, the problems did not go away. I therefore took the car to the dealer, but their mechanic could not find the causes offhandedly, and an appointment was made to thoroughly check the car with diagnostic instruments. However, on the day of the appointment (1/26/16), everything was normal again, and diagnostic tests could not find anything wrong by the dealer. Today (2/12/16), the turning signals malfunctioned again briefly and worked again, but (6) the instrument panels were all erroneous, with readings of fuel, coolant temperature, tachometer above limits - even when the car is stationary. I expect that it is a matter of time that (7) the speedometer will also go defective. At that time, the dash board will have to be replaced as a whole, costing more than $500 dollars. Obviously, the computer system is not working right. I should add that my car has been maintained regularly with the dealer. I hope my report will bring NHTSA¿s attention to the above parts/workmanship problems of gm.

7 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2015

Come on now, I see the complaints on a bunch of things that is wrong with my 2004 Impala. An there is more than one person saying it. There seems like there is a serious problem here that you guys seem to be ignoring an refusing to fix. I think its about time for some people to get together and file some kind of lawsuit against you guys if you don't address these issues. Now for the same complaints for my Impala, number 1 it does not like to start sometimes and then I have to wait 20 mins to an hour just for it to finally start. Number 2 the security light stays on. Number 3 the gages to my speedometer and gas move all over the place and doesn't give me the accurate reading. Other experiences I've had noticed is that my brights don't always like to shut off the first time, the car pulls mainly to the right, but also back and forth. And all the buttons and light to my radio works but no sound comes threw. I haven't experienced any of the other things in the complaints yet but these ones I have an they need to be addressed like I said before something is done about it by the people. Thank you.

8 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2014

2004 chevy Impala loses low beam headlamps due to an issue with the multipurpose switch located on the steering column. After doing a google search found hundreds of others with the same issue. After losing low beam headlamps after a few months high beam lamps are also not working.

9 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Switch became difficult to change to high beems, sometimes the lights would go black. Now high beams only stay on by hold switch back.

10 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2013

Headlamps turn off while driving.

11 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2013

While driving on a rural and curvy road, my lights when out when I switched from my high beams to my low beams. I could not see for a few seconds and luckily the high beams came on when I used the multifunction switch to engage them. I am lucky that no one was coming because I was unable to see where I was going. The multifunction switch did not “click” like it typically does when I switch from high beams to low beams. Luckily no one was injured when I was driving but if this happens in the future to someone else there could be tragic results.

12 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2010

Had high beams on, heading home, lights all of a sudden went off! pulled over and stopped. Low beams work fine, high beams do not.

13 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2010

The toggle between low beam and high beam quit working, it won't stay in high beam, but that didn't affect my life very much. But suddenly, the driving lights went out on this 2004 chevy Impala. This is dangerous, not just a minor inconvenience, and now I cannot drive at night at all, dramatically affecting my life. The part is extremely expensive to replace, between $550 and $800, and that seems to rise to the level of a manufacturer responsibility, given the similar consumer items that have switches that perform satisfactorily far longer in the life of a product.

14 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

Head lights went out completely on car. The only way to have head light is to pull the bright light switch back and hold it. So one hand for bright light and one for steering. So with on coming traffic its either the bright lights or no lights. Happened on a very dark night on a country road. Could have been a very bad accident. Lucky that my 3 small children where not with me.

15 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2009

Driving on a dark rural road at night and tried to put my lights on high beam. The lights went totally out when I tried to put them on high beam. Previously during the past 3 months they have flickered when I went to put them on high beam but did not go totally out. I have tried several more times to put them on high beam and the lights go out totally each time so I do not dare to try to put them on high beam now at all. I have called a dealership to have this looked into. They say they will have to test the car first then take the steering column apart and probably replace the switch. Estimated cost up to $1000. 00 my car has only 27,499 miles on it and I bought it brand new in 2004.

16 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2008

While driving at night my high beams will suddenly shut off. If I hit the dim/bright switch, the low beams will come back on. I have tried taking the lights off of the automatic setting but it makes no difference. It is very dangerous to be driving at night and the lights all of a sudden shut off.

17 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2007

I bought a used 2004 Chevrolet Impala and October 19, 2007 and a few months after I had the vehicle the speedometer stopped working. My speed odometer said I was doing forty when I got pulled over for doing 55mph, and as I pulled off and looked at the speedometer it was stuck at 40mph. Also the lights go out at any given time on their own. I was driving home one night and my head lights shut off in the middle of a curve and I hit the brakes and slid off the road. This is a real safety hazard. After I fooled around with the highbeam switch for a while the lights started working again.

18 Exterior Lighting problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

I have read several complaints on forums, such as the ones on carcomplaints. Com, about this issue. 2004 chevy Impala. . . Using the high beams, and suddenly its dark out side. . . The lights just turn off! you have to flicker the high beams a few times, and the normal lights will come back on. My lights have turned off while driving in the dark at least 400 times so far! this is going to get someone killed! everyone wants around $700 to fix the issue, I think chevy should step up and pay this!.
