When backing out of the drive way and go to accelerate the abs/traction control engages and causes the car to stop. It also happens on the road once u come to a stop and or stop and turn onto a street or highway. Almost got rear ended a few times. I read online at its happening alot to people all over. This problem is constant ever since I bought the car. Previous ower advised me of the problem as well.

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2016

I've owned a 2004 Chevrolet Impala for the past 7 years. Every year or so my abs, service traction system, and track off lights usually during a non-event situation. I put my brakes on and they lock and all of a sudden all my lights are on. I've spent a lot of money constantly fixing this problem. Everyone else with an Impala seems to have constant issues with this as well. I'm now being asked to completely change out my abs module & controller for a whopping $3k on a vehicle with only 130k miles after already spending thousands of dollars over the years for abs/traction issues. This is clearly a persistent safety issue which is costing Impala owners an arm and a leg and needs to be looked into. I've owed many vehicles with much higher mileage and never had issues like this before.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2016

While driving down the highway I saw some smoke or steam coming from under the right dash . I didn't know what it was , so I check my gauges and every thing looked ok , I continue to driving trying to make it to my mothers house. The car cut itself off and I shift to n and roll into the driveway. I got out went into the house for a couple of min. When I return the car was smoking , I dash water on top of the hood but the smoke turn into flames that's when I called 911. Help came and was able to put the fire out.

5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Faulty/worn ignition switch in this vehicle will generate the following issues: (determined through trial and error due to chronic electrical issues:) 1). Engagement and disablement of abs system because of lack of good power to the system from the ignition switch circuit. 2). Entire loss of directional system(turn signals) again because of lack of good power to the system from the ignition switch circuit. These two situations lead to vehicle that is unsafe to drive at the time of the failure which may happen stationary or while in motion. These issues were intermittent and would happen at any time. Ignition switch in a vehicle should not generate issues such as this.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

Cheverolet Impala 2004, traveling on a 4 lane divided highway, at 65mph, using cruse control, 2 adult passengers using seatbelts, driver saw truck entering the intersection from the drivers right side. The driver accelerated and swerved to avoid a collision. The Impala was struck by the truck. Skid marks were made on the highway by the tires of the Impala from the impact to where the Impala stopped and the engine stopped. The driver worked to put the car into park to restart the Impala in order to move the Impala to a safer position on the highway, out of the lanes of traffic. Upon stopping the driver turned off the ignition key to the off position. The key was not on a key ring. The key had been removed from the fob and key ring upon receiving the safety recall notice, gm recall 14350. The hazard blinkers were turned on. The driver and passenger moved to the adjacent frontage road. The driver of the truck called the local police. The driver of the Impala called 911. A police report was made. Pictures were taken of the damage to both vehicles and the skid marks on the highway, made by the Impala. No skid marks were visible along the path traveled by the truck. The Impala hazard blinkers were turned off. The driver attempted to start the Impala. The Impala did not start. The passenger worked to start the Impala, the dash lights did not turn on, the head lights did not turn on. A witness moved a vehicle into position to facilitate a "jump start", the Impala started, the security warning light was illuminated. The Impala was driven a short distance and parked, odometer reading 297336. Arrangements for repair have yet to be determined.

@ 65mph traffic came to a slow dwn,I had plenty of space 2 stop if I had 2 in my lane. I applied the breaks & the wheels locked up & was skidding out of control,it surged into the lane left of me & the rear slid over where I was sideways. I tried to control my steering but it would not respond, then it went into the lane right of me nearly missing a truck it shot over to the right lane and was now on the shoulder where I still had no control of any steering at all. Then the car slamed into a concreat retaining wall and finely the car stopped. The air bags driver and passenger never inflated. Damage to the front end was a total loss including the hood, both right and left side fenders had crunched, the driver and passenger doors bent then the battery died. I already replaced a battery three weeks ago from some kind of electrical system was malfunctuing.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

After listening to a radio report on npr describing the problem with gm ignition switch recalls I decided to test my own car for related problems. As I pulled into my driveway I tapped on the key while it was in the ignition and the key switched from on to acc mode. This resulted in my car engine shutting off, power steering loss, assisted brake malfunction, battery warning light, and the airbag light came on. All of these problems happened exactly as the radio report said they would with a faulty ignition switch. Over the last 3 years my brother in-law and I have been having various problems with our ignitions and now I believe all these problems may be caused by the defect which gm has recently reported. I have contacted the gm recall hotline and reported my car model and VIN. They informed me that there is nothing they can do since they have not received enough reports linked to the Impala. I would appreciate the recall list being expanded to include the Impala if possible. At least the years of 2003 and 2004.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2014

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the vehicle would shake vigorously when the brakes were applied. The failure occurred while driving various speeds. The dealer replaced all four brakes, rotors, and tires and performed an alignment; however, the failure recurred. In addition, the vehicle would fail to restart when turned off for thirty minutes or longer. The starter was replaced twice, but this did not remedy the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 161,000.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2014

I was driving my 2004 Impala when I hit a pot hole. I tried to turn and hit the brakes and nothing worked. I slammed on my emergency brake and after a while I realized the car had shut off completely. A month later my boyfriend had the same experience driving it.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2013

The traction control light came on before the snow and ice came and then on my way to work with no warning when the brakes were applied I had no brakes at all. I slid right through a busy intersection with no warning. The abs braking system does not work at all in the snow and ice. I was very lucky the cars were spaced out, that kept me from a very serious accident. I have read online that alot of other people are experiencing the exact same problem with the same make, model and year of car. My question is why have they not issued a recall on the 2004 chevy Impala before it kills or seriously injures other people.

16 Service Brakes problem

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

My wife got into a wreck because chevy has not recalled these issues. My 2004 Impala abs brakes malfunctioned along with my traction control , she tried to stop at a stop sign and the brake pedal kicked up and would not let her stop she removed her foot from the brake and tried pressing the pedal back down and it kicked up kicking in the abs and traction control not allowing her to stop and she ran into a snow bank but my insurance paid for the body work but not the mechanical problems I replaced both hubs on the front, quit doing it for a week or so and then when I drive it the traction control and abs kicks in while im driving down the road. Now my speedometer, tachometer and temp gauge are not workin at 0 rpm my car is doing 90 mph as it sits in my garage not starting because my key will not turn to start it my steering wheel will not lock and because I cant turn my key I can not put my car in neutral to push it out of my garage so I can get it towed I have read so many issues on these and other gm models I am surprised that there was no recalls when I called had this car for 4 years and nothing but problems and money so as my car sits in my garage as it will till these items get recalled I am not putting anymore money in this car I will drive my 98 Infiniti that I have had for almost 10 years because I know its dependable. Never again gm will you get another cent from me I have never had this many problems with any car.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2010

Have changed rotors multiple times, after about a month when braking at high speeds 45mph or higher, car shakes from pulsating brakes. In wet weather makes the car a little uncontrollable dealer says OH its how it is, gm is aware but they don't feel it is a real issue. This among the inability of the heating system to work for more than a year before its components need to be replaced is ridiculous. I had been a loyal gm customer. So sorry wont be anymore this is insane to pay this much for a vehicle and it have this many issues since purchase.

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2009

Well I'm so tired of repairing the same problem . This abs issues are driving me crazy I mean I already replaced the damn computer the bearings the cable that sends the signal and still this problem is going on in since 2009. Ever since 2009 is ridiculous and dangerous I mean is a matter of time before this issue becomes an accident I mean I'm driving fine and all of a sudden the damn car acts all stupid the brakes don't even work fine because the abs system makes them push back to you and then it makes your car pull to the right for no reason it so annoying I'm a hard working person I have invested a lot of money into my car for GMC to sell me a dangerous car I also had to get another motor because the original would shake when ever you would accelerate but I just want to get this dangerous issue fixed please make them repair my car because sooner or later my wife or me are going to have an accident. . . . Thank you.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that when applying the brakes, there was an abnormal noise coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop who diagnosed that the abs system was defective and would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. 21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2009

New 2004 chevy Impala LS first use 3/23/05. Three times since purchase I've had to replace a wheel bearing & hub assembly. March of 2006 the right rear, January of 2008 the left rear, October of 2009 the right front. Each time the abs and service traction system lights were on. I paid $636. 31 this last time. This appears to be a poor design and a safety issue which could lead to the car being undriveable. I was told that the tires would begin to wobble and the steering would be affected if not repaired within a certain amount of time. I've seen on line I'm not the only one who has had a problem with this defect. I'm concerned that the 4th one will fail, or the other 3 that have been replaced will fail again. I am #1 concerned with my safety & the safety of others on the road. I am also concerned about the money I've had to pay because of this design defect.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

2004 Impala, brake rotors warping. Car has approx 73,000 miles. In that time both front and rear brake rotors have been replaced or resurfaced approx 4-5 times due to pulsing when brakes are applied.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2008

My wife was driving home from work when the engine stopped running and caused her to have to pull off the road. It took several minutes before car would restart. Since the first time she had this happen at least 3 times a year since. I've driven the car several times after she has told me it happened again and had our mechanic look at it also. Also have had the instrument panel gauges not working properly for 2 years now and haven't been able to figure out why, we think there is a short somewhere in the electrical system but have not been able to pin point it. The chrome plate aluminum alloy rims the chrome has been flaking off since the car was 2 years old and we now have to keep refilling the tires with air at least once a week. Have gone to the dealer a couple of times but get a run around that its not a problem with the car. I have talked to a gentleman who also has the only other 2004 Impala ss in our town and he has the same problems as we have had and gotten same response from our local dealer where we both bought our cars from. My Impala ss at this time has just over 80,000 miles on it and in addition to problems mentioned above we had to have power steering pump, rack in pinion and alternator replaced and looking like the rack in pinion is going out again as I write this. I've become very disappointed with Chevrolet over this car.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2006

: the contact stated when the brake was applied, the pedal pulsated and the vehicle shook. The front rotors were replaced twice and the front and rear brakes and rear rotors were replaced once. The shaking stopped for one week, but then the shaking persisted. There was a NHTSA recall, # 04v287000, regarding the service brakes, hydraulic. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2006

When turning left or right there is a clicking sound coming from the turn in the steering. During the turn it feels as though there is a break in the steering line. It seems as if it were a chain I would say its missing about 4 links. I took it in for this problem about 6 months ago and it was resolved for a while. I was told the steering column needed tightening. Here it is doing the same thing for the last 2 months. Now I notice the braking is not stopping in the manner it should. I have nearly rearended a few people in the last 2 months or continued just past the stop line at an intersection.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2006

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the steering wheel shutters and shakes when the brakes are applied. The vehicle has not been diagnosed. The purchase date was unavailable. The current mileage is 38,000 and failure mileage was 31,000.

27 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2005

My family and I were traveling down a highway in florida and were traveling about 50 mph and a line of vehicles in front of us stopped, not real fast, but they stopped and we were about 80 yards in back of them and when I applied my brake petal the car just didn't want to stop. It was skidding all along, squealing tires, until I lost control of it and started to fishtail. About 1 foot more or so, we would have been in a major accident! I didn't slam them on or anything. It was kind of a sudden stop, but not really too sudden. All of the vehicles around us stopped prefectly normal. I've driven many vehicles and have never experienced this! my car is still under warrenty, however I have never taken it in. I think I should though. But still, general morors and Chevrolet should be ashamed of themselves for releasing a dangerous vehicle like this! another small complaint I have, which is not necessarly a safety concern, is the fact that the steering is rather poor on this vehicle. When you go around turns, you have a make an effort to turn the steering wheel and get the car going straight again. I am a firm believer that new cars should be better than old one's, however my experiences have obviously proven that they're not. Thank you for reading my complaint. I hope you can get this information out to the public and maybe then gm can make changes.

28 Service Brakes problem
