40 Traction Control System problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/24/2012

As I was driving to golf on Monday September 24th, on interstate I-80 heading west, my 2009 chevy Impala onboard computer stated the following, service traction control, reduced power, starter disabled and the check engine light all at roughly the same time. My car completely died and I had no power steering. Luckily I was able to coast out of harms way and get to the side of the road. I checked some wires under the hood and didn't find anything loose. When I attempted to start the car back-up, the onboard computer flashed, starter disabled. I sat with the car for about 15 minutes and tried once more. This time it started and ran normal, but the check engine like was on(still is). How scary is this really? enough to make me hate driving this car anywhere. Not to mention I'm a single dad of 4, who needs to get to work, school and many other things.

41 Traction Control System problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/22/2012

While traveling on I-95 at about 75mph, the following message appeared on the dash," repair traction control system. . . Engine power is reducing". Thankfully, I was approaching a rest area, so I safely coasted to a secure area. After escaping a potentially fatal accident, I researched this traction control message, only to discover innumerable customers had the same problem. This issue should be investigated since it is a universal problem, one that is endangering the lives of gm and other drivers on the highway.

42 Traction Control System problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/20/2012

I have 42,000 on my 2011 chevy Impala and the service traction control and then reduce engine power as well as the check engine light came one. I have read it is the throttle body and not covered under the extended warranty, but numerous people are having the same problem with the same exact thing and no recall or any kind of care is coming from gm. . . . And those of us that are still paying for our cars are getting the short end of the stick. . .

43 Traction Control System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala

45 Traction Control System problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

My car is giving a reduced engine light, traction control and now starting disabled. The car will not start or dies in process of driving car. This is dangerous and I have rea this is not the first time.

46 Traction Control System problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 08/10/2011

The traction control turns on frequently. This causes the car to make a grinding noise. When braking the car makes a grinding noise and car is not stopping it feels like it's locking up and sliding. In a sudden stop needing to be made is at great risk of a accident. I have replaced a elbow shaped part that has busted open twice. Car is constantly over heating the radiator cap has a rustic clay like substance. It won't hold antifreeze, I don't see a leak but it needs refilled quite often. The engine smokes, the cars rpm's will flex up and down and the car will just cut off. I'm wondering if the rustic clay like substance has gone through my engine and is causing me many problems with it. I have found reports of lawsuits in past regarding dexicool in gm cars doing this and ruining the engine. The problems in the reports are just like mine and many others on here. Help!!'.

47 Traction Control System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/20/2011

We purchased our 2007 Impala ss on 11/17/09 with 33,003 miles on it. On July 20, 2011 while driving home from work with my wife and stepson on the I-94 freeway in clinton township, mi. , the leftside rear tire blewout. We notice that it had broke the inner plastic piece and bent the muffler tip and there was clearly no rubber left on the inside of the tire all you saw was wires. Had to put our spare tire on. Took the car into the tire shop on July 22, 2011 to have that tire replaced, service guy said there was no rubber left on the inside of the left tire in the rear, and the wires were clearly visible and showed us them, which we had noticed when this occured. He also stated that on the rear rightside the wires were showing too. We had him replace all 4 tires on the vehicle. He also stated that we had been the 4th Impala they had replaced tires on in the past week. While on the lift we noticed that the back tires were slightly leaning out, like (/) left side and (\) right side, I told him that I want the tires back and he gave them to me. We took them home and took picks of them and the back of our car to show how the tires were still leaning out, and also took pictures of where the plastic had been broke in the wheel well. This has happened in less than 20,000 mile since we purchased the vehicle. I went to the dealership that we purchased the vehicle from and told the service guy what had happened, he stated that there was no recall as of yet on this problem but that other people had came in with the same complaints, that I should get ahold of gm and see what they say. He told me that he was aware of the police vehicle that had been recalled but as of yet knew nothing about all others. He stated that he wished he could do something for us but there was nothing he could do. When is gm gonna do something about this?.

48 Traction Control System problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

No events appear to lead up to the problem. It occurs randomly without warning, especially during backup operations. The abs seems to come on whenever it likes during braking, causing heavy loss in stopping power. This can occur regardless of road conditions or speed. Similar to this, the traction control system appears to come on during acceleration at random times, especially at low speeds or in reverse. This occurs on dry roads frequently and occasionally causes the vehicle to pull heavily to one side as neither side is actually slipping. An accident has not yet occurred but certainly can given the nature of the failures. A TSB is available concerning the abs. This vehicle has a whopping 75 tsbs! service bulletin number : 4615 NHTSA item number : 10023171.

49 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 05/15/2011

1. There were really no events that led up to the failure. 2. The abs system started engaging at inappropriate times (when traction control was not warranted--completely dry). This started out sporadically but has since become daily. At first, just the abs engaged and the "traction active" light illuminated. Now, it will cause the traction control system to disarm itself and the "service traction system" light will illuminate. 3. The front hub assembly was replaced 4 times with 4 different parts.

50 Traction Control System problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/11/2011

"service traction control" warning light comes on intermittenly during operation of vehicle even in perfect driving conditions. When this warning light appears, the brakes respond by becoming "spongy" or "less reactive" limiting the driver's ability to brake safely. Car was inspected by two different auto repair technicians and they were able to rule out tire/hub/brake issues but were unable to pinpoint a cause for the warning light to appear and cause the problem described above. They said they reset the car's computer and this resolved the issue for about 3 weeks, then the issue recurred.

51 Traction Control System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/10/2011

I have a 2008 chevy Impala, nice car unless it snows. It is undrivable in the smow. Its like driving on ice, I have never ever had any car handle like this. It is the most unsafe car I have ever driven. Something needs to be done the draler says to bring it in next time it smows, well I can't, I will not drive it in the snow. I have been in the ditch 3 times this winter ( and its only the firts of January)and each time I was only going no morer than 30mph and swaying all over the road, all the other cars were moving along norrmally it wasn't bad out, just a little snow. It's like driving on ice. . .

52 Traction Control System problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/21/2010

2008 Impala LS,with new tires. Have never driven a car that handles worse in the snow. The traction control system is a joke. It actually makes driving in the snow unpredictable and unfamiliar. I am very experienced on ice and snow but this car makes me feel unsafe because it is. I wish I would have never purchased this car based on this reason. All this in only 1 1/2 inches of dry snow.

53 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

The traction control is constantly engaging even under ideal driving situations. It engages while driving and turning at slow speeds. Once engaged during pulling onto a road and due to holding car back (no traction) almost had a collision. Also when the brakes are applied a noise is heard and a slight push back of the brake pedal occurs. Noise is possibly from the abs. Since the two (tc and abs) are linked it could be disrupting one or the other. I have searched several forums and many consumers are complaining of the same problem. Many have tried several solutions, but the problem persists. Wrote a letter to gm about this problem. I am very concerned this is a safety issue and only a matter of time before a death occurs due to this issue. Also no known root cause or easy fix and cust have spent thousands to fix issue at dealer yet issue remains. This should be researched and recalled before anyone gets seriously hurt. Thank you in advance.

54 Traction Control System problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/22/2010

I had purchased a 2010 Chevrolet Impala in July, 2010. The first attempt at repair of the front end vibration was on 10/22/2010. The dealership did not recognize the vibration. The vehicle tires were rotated on 01/26/11 in an attempt to stop the vibration in the front end. The vehicle was taken in on 03/18/11 for front end noise (thump) while turning the wheels. The vehicle was taken in on 07/07/11 for the thumping noise in the front end while turning the wheels. The vehicle was taken in on 07/28/11 for a front end thumping noise when turning the wheels. The vehicle was taken in on 08/16/11 for a front end thumping noise and the dealership notices the tires were wearing slightly cupped on the inside edge. The vehicle was taken in on 09/08/11 for a whining noise from tne engine bay and power steering fluid was flushed. The vehicle was taken in on 04/09/12 for front end thumping noise, wheel bearing, transmission surge, and whine noise from radio. The vehicle was taken in on 06/27/12 for rough idle, tire replacement, transmission. The vehicle was taken in on 07/27/12 for rough idle, transmission surge, thump noise in front end and whine noise in radio. The vehicle was taken in on 10/05/12 for transmission surge, rough idle, thump noise in front end, and whine noise in radio. The outcome at this point is the dealership tried to reprogram the vehicle, gm approved replacement of all four tires, a replacement of the power steering pump, wheel bearing on driver front side. The dealerships have done two throttle body cleanings. The dealership has stated they will replace the rotors but gm would not approve replacement only turning on the rotors. This case has been opend with the better business bureau whom advised me to contact NHTSA. Gm refuses to replace parts because their computer system cannot tell them what is wrong with the vehicle. Gm has recalled the police vehicles for front end suspension and has a lawsuit pending in michigan for personal vehicl.

55 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

When wheels are turned to the right either slightly or all the way the traction control kicks in, loss of power and loss of brakes when abs also kicks in. Bought the 2002 chevy Impala LS just a week ago. This issue started as very intermittent but I can re-create the issues now just about every time I drive the car by turning right from a stop. At this point nothing has been done to fix the issue because no one knows why it is happening.

56 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

2000-2004 chevy Impala abs/trac control issues affecting braking under wet conditions and low speed. Complaints at topix . Net.

57 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 08/09/2010

The vehicle's traction control system malfunctions. From a stop position, the accelerator pedal is applied, the vehicle will surge forward, then temporarily lose momentum rendering the vehicle stationary. It occurs every time the vehicle is driven. Maintenance has been performed to the brakes and the hub assemblies have been replaced; the old parts are not available. After attempts to resolve the source of this problem, the issue remains unsolved and poses a severe safety issue. Due to this unsafe malfunction, there have been several near front, rear and side collisions while pulling into traffic.

58 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/30/2010

My 2002 chevy Impala 3. 8l v-6 has a problem with the traction control engaging when braking in turns to the left. This causes the brakes to slip and grind. A humming sound can be heard when this occurs. The traction control and sometimes the "check abs " light becomes illuminated at the same time. The car has been taken to a local chevy dealer for repair. Both right and left front wheel hub assemblies were replaced. I requested a check of wiring harnesses to see if there was deterioration. None was apparently found by the shop. I'm afraid to drive this car or allow others in my family to drive it incase the brakes can't engage properly. From reading online accounts of other drivers, I am not the only one with this problem with a Chevrolet of this model. After having the right front hub assembly replaced, I thought it was fixed. Then after having the left front replaced as well to the tune of around $500. 00 a piece, I though the problem was fixed. Not so. Where does this end. I urge you to look into a recall of this model and have gm ultimately fix this problem and avoid allowing for a possible accident with injuries or death.

59 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/11/2010

The abs system on my 2001 Chevrolet Impala engages and the "traction active" light comes on when making a sharp turn from a stopped position. The light goes off and the abs system disengages within about 5 seconds. This happens at least once each time the car is driven. Three trips to the local Chevrolet dealer and no repairs made and no solution thus far. The chevy dealer says they cannot duplicate the problem.

60 Traction Control System problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/07/2010

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Impala. While driving approximately 80 mph, the trac stability and engine warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle immediately stalled. The vehicle was restarted after twenty minutes and resumed normally. The failure recurred three times when driving extended distances. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 52,000.

61 Traction Control System problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/06/2010

My 2002 chevy Impala 3. 8l v-6 has a problem with the traction control engaging when braking in turns to the left. This causes the brakes to slip and grind. A humming sound can be heard when this occurs. The traction control and sometimes the "check abs " light becomes illuminated at the same time. The car has been taken to a local chevy dealer for repair. Both right and left front wheel hub assemblies were replaced. I requested a check of wiring harnesses to see if there was deterioration. None was apparently found by the shop. Im afraid to drive this car or allow others in my son to drive it incase the brakes cant engage properly. From reading online accounts of other drivers, I am not the only one with this problem with a Chevrolet of this model. After having the right front hub assembly replaced, I thought it was fixed. Then after having the left front replaced as well to the tune of around $350. 00 a piece, I though the problem was fixed. Not so. Where does this end. I urge you to look into a recall of this model and have gm ultimately fix this problem and avoid allowing for a possible accident with injuries or death. This is something that gm knows there is a problem and again should be recalled.

62 Traction Control System problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/02/2010

I bought a 2009 chevy Impala with 35k miles on and not even a month after I bought it I started having problems with the traction control on acceleration and sometimes on braking. . . I see with all the internet complaints that this is a wide spread problem that gm seems to be putting off. . I have contacted gm and they told me the same thing as every other complaint take to dealer and spend over $100 just to get it looked at and the dealers say the same 3 things as all other complaints it could be three things. . Gas pedal sensor, brake pedal sensor, or the sensor on the hub assembly. . . Hmmmmmmmmmmm gm help. . . Ps after I got mad on phone gm agreed to pay a mere $90 of the bill which is gonna cost over $300 to fix. . . .

63 Traction Control System problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/27/2010

2000 chevy Impala LS,(this problem started when my car was at 40,000 miles) the traction control will come on for no reason. This causes automatic breaking for which you can not move the car you can be backing up, turning, or going forward. The car will lag and then shudder fighting the brakes that have been applied by the car while I am on the gas. I have for my self turned the traction control off. However I have researched on line and found that there are thousands of people with this very same problem. They have been to the dealerships for trouble shooting and replaced many possible parts it could be and the problem will resurface again. I was content with turning the traction control off although with further research I have found the traction control will re-engage, since this button needs to be pressed every time you turn on the car. It will re-engage itself and you can not turn it off. The button becomes useless. This is why I am turning to the NHTSA for help. I see this being a huge safety risk that I am driving and the abs will engage itself because the traction control has come on. I have been lucky this has only happened at low speeds my fear is that I will have my daughter in the car with me and this happens at highway speed. I am sure you can see the danger in this happening at any speed let alone if it should happen at a faster speed of rate. Thank-you for your attention to this matter I look forward to a recall and a real solution to this problem.

67 Traction Control System problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/15/2009

When I give it a little gas to go usually just when im first taking off the traction control kicks in but if I let off the gas it kicksback off. Then again, go a few blocks and hit the brakes and the antilock brakes kick in some times it turns off the traction control and abs it seem like this is a problem with a large number of Impalas and every one is shelling out a lot of money and still have the problem I don't have that kind of money can you tell me what is wrong or should I trade it in for a Ford I am 46 and have always been faithful to chevy but if im stuck with a factory defect Ford here I come.

68 Traction Control System problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

Service traction system/abs several months ago I noticed the traction feature engaging without cause. It began to get worse and engages mostly when you turn (either direction), but happens very often. Took to dealer was told it needed new wheel bearings, had both replaced (which was very pricey) and it was okay for about 3 months and has since started again. This is very dangerous, when the traction is engaged it makes it very difficult to stop when braking, it causes a delay in stopping. I've asked other mechanics, nobody is sure what to do to fix the problem but all have heard several of the same complaints. I googled the problem in hopes of finding a solution, to no avail, but there are 1000's of similar complaints online for the 2001 Impala. There should definitely be a recall. . . . . This is very dangerous!!.

69 Traction Control System problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 12/12/2007

2007 chevy Impala absolutely sucks on any amount of snow. Rear end fishtails left and right as if it has a mind of it's own. Absolutely ridiculous and unsafe!!.

70 Traction Control System problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/01/2007

2003 chevy Impala 3. 8 engine. I have had recurring, intermittent problems with the traction control kicking in when pulling away from a stop in dry weather and dry road conditions. Not an appropriate time for it to kick in. Then it releases. I have had the mechanic look at it several times but they cannot find anything because the computer doesn't flash a code. I am concerned that the car will be unsafe if the traction control operates at inappropriate times.
