I own a 2000 Chevrolet silverado ext. Cab 4x4 I am having a problem with the abs on this truck ,abs comes on at low speeds ,the brake pedal gets very hard and cant stop, this is a very dangerous situation . This has happened on many occassions ,dont feel safe driving this truck. I have talked to other Chevrolet truck owners with the same problem,I have not hit anything or anyone yet, Chevrolet needs to take care of this problem with their trucks before someone gets hurt or worse yet killed, thank you for your time , thomas oliver portville.

Vehicle is a 1997 chevy K1500 pickup
the problem is that the abs brakes sometimes activate at low speeds, which definately causes it to take a couple extra feet to stop, which could be a problem since it typically happens when in stop and go traffic and you're already close to the car in front. The dealer gave me a TSB which describes the problem and says it is due to corrosion of the wheel hub. My mechanic tried to fix the problem, but the sensor on the passenger side was siezed in the hub, which likely means the entire hub will need to be replaced to fix the problem. For the time being, the abs system has been disabled, and the brakes are now functioning normally (but obviously without the anti-lock function). Based on news reports, this is a very common problem which gm appears to be downplaying. This has prompted me to file this report so that my vehicle could be counted in the statistics. Note that this was not a single event, so the "incident date" is approximately when the abs system was disabled.

I have a 1999 chevy silverado K1500 extended cab. I bought it in the summer of 2002. By January of 2003, I began having trouble with the abs kicking in when is was slowing down to a stop. The roads were not wet or slippery and I almost went into traffic several times (I have also almost hit a parked car pulling in a parking space, and almost went over a steep embankment since then). I paid over $300 in February 2003 to have them fixed and that lasted until February of 2004. When I almost went over the steep embankment at my local grocery store when I was pulling into a parking space, I decided to pull the fuse. The only problem with this is that you don't have cruise any longer. I finally decided I had to get it fixed because we wanted the cruise feature so I got it fixed in December of 2004. By that time, the Chevrolet dealers are finding out there is a problem and they just need to clean out the sensor which now costs about $75 (the dealership I bought the truck from wouldn't even admit there was a problem). The big problem is that I do not know when they will give me problems again and I am still a little afraid to drive my truck. I have 2 young children and I would hate to be in an accident and hurt them because of something that chevy knows about and refuses to deal with. I have been checking online, and I have noticed a lot of people are having the same problem. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed before someone loses their life over it.
