Four problems related to fuel pump have been reported for the 1996 Chevrolet Lumina. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Fuel filter burned up inside gas tank. The wires were burned and the plastic body was burned and charred. Mechanic was surprised that there was no fire or explosion. He said it was probaly a manufacturer defect and being that I had a full tank of gas saved the car from going on fire.
While driving and went to accelerate and engine shutdown. Mechanic listened to car, and could not hear fuel pump turning on. Then, said that fuel pump had broken. Mechanic drained fuel out, and noticed that electrical harness that was plugged into fuel pump shorted out, and caused it to melt. Mechanic insisted that plug was never connected completely by manufacturer. Consumer said when there would be a short and gas low enough, it could explode.
Fuel pump was noticed burning while being removed from engine; manufacturer notified.
The engine cut off, lost all power due to the fuel pump burning up. Dealer said that fuel pump needed to be replaced.
