The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina. When the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for scheduled maintenance, she was informed that the intake gasket needed to be replaced. The repair will cost $1,000. The current and failure mileages were 51,000.
The engine started knocking around 100k miles and getting worse ever since. The piston pin is going bad. I found out that gm knows about this problem by a certified gm technician. He told me that all 3. 1l engines have this problem and gm wont fix it. I feel shafted and will never by a gm product again.

While driving, the engine will cut out, then run smooth again, causing the car to jerk. Several times the engine would die. The car would start back up, when you put into gear and push the gas, the engine would cut out, the car would jerk as the engine cut out and then reengage, but eventually the engine would die. We sent to our local repair shop, he replaced the spark plugs, minor tune, replace air filter, check fuel pump - ok, and replace fuel filter. Car ran fine for three days and then repeated the same problem. Took back into shop, replaced ignition switch and coils. Engine runs ok, but when engaging into gear engine did not have the same response as before, it felt like it was running at half speed. Car is now slow to gain speed. Top speed is 65 miles per hour. Now 'service engine soon' light is on, sometimes flashing.
All engine mounts upper and lower had to be replaced. Also had to replace both tie-rod ends, inner & out.

Engine with 60,000 miles is basically dead, chevy wants $500. To "look" inside and see what the problem is. Private mechanic said it's something to do with the pistons not properly fitting into cylinders. (I think he called it "piston slam") have heard of others with same 3. 1 engine dying anywhere between 60 and 80 thousand miles. Why should I have to pay $500 for them to look at it, and then another $3500 for a new engine? yes, the car went out of warranty in Dec. But this is obviously a pre-existing problem that should be under recall.
Lumina had 33698 miles and was clattering when cold starting, lasts 3-10 minutes, called dealer where car was bought, dealer says it is piston slap and it is common, nothing they can do about it. Gets worse and worse as the miles rack up. Car has been in three times for engine clatter and have been told everytime piston slap very common and unwarrantied.
Consumer was driving down the highway at 40mph and noticed fire coming out from under the front side driving wheel . When consumer pulled to the side she noticed the engine was on fire. Dealer has been contacted.
Registered by mike kearney. Consumer has ongoing problems with the engine cutting off intermittently when car is running, sometimes when air conditioner and heater are on. Dealer contacted, and cannot remedy the problem. Problem still exists. Provide further information.
Engine at cold idle is knocking again, 7000 miles since new pistions, transmission is slipping again after 7000 miles, front end suspension dealer has never been able to duplicate the problem have had it looked at 6 times.
Antifreeze was sprouting out. Light had came on. Drove to dealership, and was informed by mechanic that engine gaskets were gone & needed to be replaced. This was second time that engine gasket problem has happened.
