Six problems related to hydraulic power assist steering system have been reported for the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Consumer received a recall notification. After taking the vehicle to dealer for recall repairs consumer was involved in single car collision. Steering failed.
When turning right power steering failed intermittently.
While driving or turning, the vehicle lost power steering and it became difficult to steer.
Once the vehicle is at "normal operating temperature" the power steering becomes hard and will squeal. I have replaces the power steering fluid, in entirety, and the problem still persists. I plan on going to a dealership ASAP, but reading all of the articles on this vehicle, it appears they will tell me the same. It is a rack-and-pinion problem that I will have to incur an out of pocket expense.
Intermittently steering became hard to steer. Dealer notified, and was unable to locate cause. Feel free to provide any further information.
While driving 75 mph, consumer heard a noise coming from under the hood. Then, vehicle lost power steering.
