Two problems related to other fuel system tank assembly have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the key became lodged in the ignition the vehicle could not be powered off. Also, the contact mentioned that the fuel gauge was showing erroneous readings and would read that the fuel tank was empty when it was actually full. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 205,000.
On very cold days (<20 deg f) gas gauge registers accurately for ~10 secs. , then falls to empty, when tank is not empty (originally happened with 3/4 tank). When engine stopped and restarted, gauge registers accurately for ~10 secs. Then falls to empty again. Only after ~1 hour of driving does the problem stop.
