26 problems related to tire have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle was unable to pass inspection due to tire (tread) separation on all 4 bridgestone potenza 's inspector pointed out that all 4 tires were cracked throughout the entire circumference on all 4 tires and dangerous/hazardous to drive on. Had to purchase new tires in order to pass inspection. . . Have taken photos of all the tires. . . Tires were purchased in oct, 2010 and replaced in Nov, 2015 -- tire had a total of 24,183 miles on it. . . And still has plenty of tread left.
On 6 August 2010, I purchased 3 tires from ray's tire & service in st. Augustine, FL 32084, having a goodyear logo touted on their invoice and a huge goodyear sign on their buildings, therefore, one would assume that tires being bought and installed are goodyear. . . Well that's no so. . . While driving to cleveland, ohio suburb last Monday (20 sept 10), my left front tire separated on I-75 running at approx 74 mph heading north in london, ky. Had it been a woman driver with lesser driving skills, lord only knows the horrors. Upon returning to town and visiting ray's tire for a rebate, I was told it was not responsible and that tire installed was a kumo tire. . . Not a goodyear. . . Thus, I ask those of your overseeing highway safety, is this acceptable as a "truth-in-advertising" issue? thus I ask of you overseeing highway safety, is this acceptable to goodyear corporate board of director stewardship? thus I ask, is this acceptable from a highway safety standpoint and trustworthy, the average consumer can feel comfortable with? this 84 year old ww ii overseas veteran consumer does not believe so and feels strongly you shouldn't either.
On June 18, 2010 I had an accident that I believe was caused by a tire failure. No other vehicles were involved in this accident and there were no injuries. The vehicle was declared a total loss by my insurance company. On June 18, 2010 at approximately 6:00pm I was driving on the pennsylvania turnpike. My vehicle was headed west somewhere between the donegal exit and the new stanton exit of the turnpike. The weather conditions were what I consider ideal driving conditions. I was in the right lane of the two lane roadway and as I was approaching a moderate curve in the roadway my vehicle pulled severely to the left, I attempted to control the vehicle by using the steering wheel and moderate pressure on the brakes. No amount of control I tried to exert was of any value and within seconds my vehicle had struck the jersey barrier on the left side of the highway and spun into a position against the right jersey barrier facing traffic. I would like to add here that I had owned and driven this vehicle for over 10 years and approaching 75,000 miles, I was completely accustomed to maintaining control of this vehicle even while driving under the worst of conditions at highway speeds. At the time of the accident my vehicle was equipped with four p215/60r15 93t yokahama avid tour s s319 bw serial no. M6orplhr1410 tires. These tires were purchased and mounted on June 15, 2010 and had approximately 150 miles on them. The immediate and severe loss of the control I experienced is the basis for my opinion that one of these tires failed catastrophically to cause this accident. My auto insurance company has researched the matter and found that there were no manufacturer recalls, investigations, or technical service bulletins relating to the conditions described. I urged them to make a physical inspection of the vehicle to determine if the tires or any other defect of the vehicle could have caused the loss of control, but they were unwilling to do so. I've had 2 tires manufactured by cooper tire fail due to faulty construction. Both tires have failed within the past year. They are 215/60r15 avenger gt rwl tires manufactured by cooper tires and I purchased them at kauffman tires. Serial #u9mwff6032.
The tires are cracking and splitting abnormally. The ones that are under 3 yrs/36,000 we have been taking to dealerships. Several dealerships have not been willing to replace these defective tires under warranty. Firestone is only replacing them by prorating the tires. (tiresize: 9215/60r15).

Consumer had inspected tires and found out that cracks had developed between treads which could lead to tread separation. Chevrolet, Malibu, 1999, 215/60r15.

On 3/1100 at about 6:35pm, I was coming from dallas to houston. Just before wyllis my car went totally out of control after my right front tire went to pieces. According to witnesses,my car was all over both highways, almost been killed by two 18 wheelers and altimately crashing on a guard on the south direction. I lost conscience and when I came to I saw alot of people over me and then taken to the first emergency. After that I was sent to another hospital emergency & after 3 days in the intensive care I was in a room where I stayed about 9 days. I sustained a fractured neck, open scal, broken right-shoulder,knee and a very bruised & swollen left wrist but not broken. Given the facts (which can all be substantiated by my dealer's records) the maintenance of my car and tires were up to the minute. We were told nothing was left from the tire and the pictures taken show the bear well of the tire all twisted. There has never been any doubt in my mind that I came very close to been killed,as a result of a bad tire. I contacted firestone and through agents I was told that I had no claim since I did not have the tire. (tiresize: p215/60r15)( dot number: tire size: p215/60r15 ).
Center of tires worn out at 30,000 miles. Rim problems, gm said no!!firestone said it happens too often!!! (tiresize: 214/60r15)( dot number: tire size: 214/60r15 ).
The tires have failed to hold air properly for any lenghth of time since originally purchasing the vehicle. It was recently noticed that the tires have gone completely bald in the center of the tire. In contacting the service manager at dave heinrich Chevrolet in lockport, NY, we are told that this is a common problem with the Malibus in that gm states that these tires were not designed for this car. Gm has since issued a bulletin stating that these tires should only be inflated to 28# in front and 26# in back, which varies from the manufacturer suggestion. Gm refuses to address this issue and the tires appear to be unsafe, although the service manager states that they "are probably safe". Gm says that our only remedy would be to contact an authorized firestone dealer, even though gm sold the car with the defective tires---gm says that they are "not defective". Please advise. While traveling at 30-40 mph right rear tire, with rim and hub still attached, came off and almost caused vehicle to go over a bridge. Dealer/manufacturer were not contacted at this time.
All four tires have cracks, all around the perimiter of innner and outer thread channels. Called firestone said water could possibly get into steel belts causing them to rust and tires to fail. Firestone also said that a firestone dealer would pro-rate thread wear, how can a manufacturer's defect cost a consumer money. Also I have personal;y seen the same defect on quite a few other chevy mailbus, with the same tires, maybe this should become a recall before one of these tires do fail at high speed. Thank you.
