39 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2012

As I was driving down the road, I signaled for a left turn. When I signaled the turn, there was a buzzing noise in the steering column and the engine turned off, resulting in a complete loss of power to steering and brakes. Luckily, I was going about 10 mph and was able to stop the car, albeit in the middle of the street. I noticed the dashboard lights were on. The car restarted immediately and I drove it 1/2 block to a parking space. I subsequently took the car to fh dailey, the local chevy dealer. They told me there was a problem with the bcm (body control module) that had caused the engine to shut off while the car was being driven. They are replacing the bcm. They did not seem particularly concerned about the problem and my impression is it is not unusual for them to encounter it. I am concerned that, had I been driving in traffic, on the highway, or on a curving road, the engine failure could have resulted in significant injury or fatality to myself or others.

40 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

1. Car keeps overheating. Put antifreeze it and run for a while and it will overheat again. No antifreeze on ground but keeps losing the antifreeze. Took vehicle to mechanic and was told that the antifreeze is mixing with the oil that it has a cracked manifold gasket. Recommendation was replace engine. 2. Took vehicle to the dealer and they said that the on board computer chip thing needs to be replaced and they informed me that is a known problem with the car but no recall is in place as of yet. The repair cost is over 1300. 00.

The car dies when you are on the road . When you shut it off to get gas or anything it wont start the gagages go all over the place. This car is very unsafe and gm needs to recall the electrical system some one is going to get kill from the car with no warning just shuts down.

43 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2011

Car fails to start after shutting off. Theft system has to be reset by leaving the key on for 9 minutes. Gm knows about this but will not do anything about it. Car does this about twice a month. Car started doing this at 52000 miles in 2005.

44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2011

I bought this car as a "steal" from a dealership. It was used as a trade in and the carfax report looked good. However, no one told me of the passlock problem. Today, I had to call off work after stopping for a cup of coffee and having to spend 3. 5+ hours resetting and starting the car, I have often had difficulties and learned of the 10 minute trick, but it doesn't always work. Gm should stand behind their products. From what I've gathered the repair can cost as high as $600 for a design flaw that will likely repeat itself. No wonder they went bankrupt with such shoddy products.

45 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

I have had intermittent electrical problems almost since buying the car in 2004. In 2010 I experienced a scary new twist: my blinkers won't always work. It happened maybe three times total over the next 12-18 months, but it is happening again, and I am now doing much more around-town driving. I have read other complaints where some owners have been able to get the blinkers working again by toggling the hazard lights, but this is not the case with my car. I turn the vehicle on and the blinkers will work the first time I use them, then not again for the rest of my trip (or in some cases, the rest of the day).

46 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2010

Passlock - theft system activates and will not allow you to start the car it occurs 2-3 times a week took it to garage - they reset the system - still does the same thing over and over - did not fix the problem 2002 chevy Malibu.

47 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

I just bought a used 2002 chevy Malibu. It only had 72,000 miles on it so I thought I was getting a great deal. Little did I know that it would leave me sitting, not starting, about once or twice a month! now I find out that many other people have this problem. I also found the work around of letting your car sit in the on position for ten minutes. If chevy knows this, why don't they fix it? I may never buy another chevy. I can not believe they are not standing behind their product. I'm tired of stressing every time I go some place and shut my car off, wondering if it's going to start.

48 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

Purchased 2002 chevy Malibu back in 2005 with 26000 miles on it . We had it serviced twice a year and for minor issues ,2009 manifold gasket started leaking replaced and was repaired. In 2010 started noticing when starting abs and theft light came on turning key off and turning key on and not starting letting on for about 15 minuets than turning off and starting car lights went off. This needed done every time this happen . Asked and was told there was a problem in my switch but no one stepped up to fix this problem. This car left me sit five times from shut off and will not start. Had it towed and they did work on every thing else thinking it would solve the problem . Had car stop running all lights came on while driving . I think this issue started back in 2001 and all these years they knew about it and didn't do anything about it . Now they are saying this is not in their recall.

52 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2009

The theft system of my 2002 Chevrolet Malibu periodically is triggered for unknown reasons. It happens fairly often up to several times a month - most recently twice today, 6 December 2009. To correct this issue I have to set my car in the "on" position for ten minutes while the system resets. This is very inconvenient (if I was on my way to an appointment or job) or could be quite dangerous &/or life threatening (trying to get family member to the er or trying to escape an attack of some kind). Chevrolet needs to do an investigation & recall whatever is causing this fault in their cars.

53 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

For the past few weeks, my car has had a problem starting up. I had someone look at it and he said there is a problem with the theft system. When I try to start the car, it will not do anything. I have to wait until the theft light goes off before the car even starts. I thought that seemed strange but after reading other complaints I see that I am not the only on having that problem.

54 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

2002 Malibu in for repair. Notice the last 12 months that at random times whether or not blinker was used, the clicking sound of the blinker stays on with no turn lights in the dash on. Could be driving down the road on a straight path and the clicking noise with just begin. Somedays it does not happen and somedays it wont stop. The shop said that it was a bad hazard switch and charge me 150. Dollars. Well guess what, I left the lot and it is still making noise. Also one out of ten times putting car in park the head lights will shut off but go back on once placed back into drive.

55 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

I was driving at about 45 mph when negotiating a turn and went to use the turn signal and it would not work. Since then it only works a quarter of the time and often the hazard relay is clicking in and out very fast like it is shorting out. If you push the hazard button in sometimes you can make the turn signals work and sometimes not. And often times the hazard will not work either. No fuses are blown?.

64 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2008

I bought a 2002 chevy Malibu from a car dealership. Once I drove off the lot the blinkers stopped working for me, they were working during the test drive. After trying to figure out what was going on I found that the problem was connected with the emergency lights box. Whenever it was in a certain position the blinkers would work otherwise they did not. I tried fixing it with some rubberbands and duct tape- for some reason that worked for awhile but now it's acting up again! help!.

65 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2008

On 6-24-2008 I was driving down the street, and I went to turn on my left turn signal, 100 feet before the turning lane (so as to warn the person behind me, that I was going to move into the left hand turning lane), and I went to turn on my left hand turn signal, and not realizing that it wasn't working, I went to move over into the left hand turn lane, and I almost hit the car that was behind me, because as he said "you didn't give me any warning that you wanted to go into the left turn lane, where I already was. You didn't turn your signal on"! the guy was really pissed off at me. I had my turn signal on way ahead of time. However ,after careful inspection, I noticed that the turn signals were "no longer working at all"! this really worried me, because if this guy had gone totally crazy on me, and had a gun, I have no doubt that he would have used it on us. I noticed that these turn signals on my 2002 chevy Malibu, are some how inter connected to the emergency signal (I found this out, after reviewing my 2002 chevy Malibu repair book. This problem needs to be corrected immediately, because it is a major problem, every time I go to make a turn. It's caused more problem's than my family or I have ever wanted. Up until this problem arose, my family & I always believed in chevy car's. Now thou, I would have to reconsider ever buying a chevy. I need this problem fixed immediately.

69 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2006

My car is a 2002 chevy Malibu. I am experiencing turn signal failure and hazardous emergency light failure the turn signal works on occasion only. There are times when it does not work at all ( many occasions ). An average % of how often it works is about 5 %, the other 95 % of the time it doesn't work at all. My emergency lights won't come on sometimes. There is a clicking noise being heard within the car almost all of the time. The sound appears to be coming from the hazard emergency light switch. Also, my remote keyless entry is not working. It won't unlock the car doors or the trunk. I have to press it at close range at least about 10 times maybe more before it will unlock the car doors or open the trunk.
