Subject vehicle hit a large pothole on us interstate; theft deterrent warning light illuminated. Stopped vehicle, turned off car. Restarted car, theft light off, resumed course/speed to final destination. Approximately 5 days later, after only local city driving during these 5 days, car would not start while parked in home garage. After attempt at jump start, had car towed to local garage where technician diagnosed issue as "car went into theft mode. " technician reset and cautioned that subject vehicle may need new ignition control. This is third or fourth time theft deterrent warning light has engaged over the past 3 years, but only time car has shut down and not started. Still using original key, although I have subsequently removed it from key chain to avoid recurrence.
After driving from our house to a family members house, we had parked our car to visit for a while. When we returned not even 30 mins later, we went to start the car and it wouldn't start. After many past issues with this, we sent it in to a shop to have them take a look at it. They stated that the theft-alert system was malfunctioning. I wish chevy would finally recall this issue.

The car was purchased in November of 2012 in washington. On the drive from washington to missouri, the car would not start after the engine was off. After waiting three days for the mechanic in a small south dakota town, he "fixed" it in ten minutes. The "solution" of keeping the engine on for ten minutes, turning to off, and then starting it again is only a temporary fix to a very real problem. This problem is so real and obvious that the ten minute solution is included in the owner's manual (why that instead of fixing it, I'm not really sure. . . ) the problem has persisted intermittently for the last year and a half, anywhere from two to eight times a month- until this last month. I began keeping track on a calendar the number of times the car would fail to work - 26 times in five weeks. This is beyond annoying. The problem would be even worse if it were not for the fact that I am a teacher and the last week of school was the first week in these five weeks. Now that I am out for the summer, many days now I stay at home, thus reducing the chance of the car failing to work as I am not using it. That last week of school, it "stalled" every single day. Two days ago, it quit working four times in one day. I have been late for work, church, and other obligations. I have been stranded in dark parking lots late at night. Alone. This is not a problem anyone should have to worry about. I drive as infrequently as I possibly can now, and was fervently praying that my car would start after filling it up with gas this morning. This is a known problem. I was hoping the most recent recalls would affect this car and when typing "2003 Malibu recalls," into a search engine, while no recalls were shown, web site and forums aplenty all came up, with multiple complaints about this singular problem of this singular car. It is a known safety problem. Why is there no recall?.
Car failed to start, only cranked. Had spark plugs, wires, ignition switch, fuel pump, fuel filter, relays, coil packs, etc. . . Replaced. Got it running drove about 40 miles, now it just dies while driving. . . No warning just cuts off. I have taken it to various mechanics and have spent alot of $$. I even had new gm motor installed. I am afraid to drive it as several time I was on highway. This is a serious safety issue. This will cause an accident or worse death. Dealership has given no help.
The first time this happened I tried to start my car and it would not start and ended up having it towed to a garage hundreds of dollars later to find out it was an theft system part that needed to be replaced. So we did that then the same thing started happening again. I got out the owners manual and was reading about turn the key for 10 minutes. Well this has been a on going problem for some time now. It was not until I starting reading all these thing on the internet to realize this is a major problem and that I am not the only one. My vehicle you never know when its going to start or not so in the morning I have to go out earlier then usual just in case I have to turn the key for 10 minutes or not. The scary part is reading all these people that have been driving and the car just stalls out on them. Gm what is it going to take for other lives to be taken before you realize this is a major problem. My car has been a great car other then this problem and it still is a great car. Just if the this theft system problem would be fixed. Come on gm step up to the plate and do whats right do the recall and get this fixed so we can go on with our lives. Thanks.
My 2003 chevy Malibu would not start. I learned that the reason it would not start was due to the theft system pass lock. Somehow the theft system was triggered and cut the fuel supply to the engine. I did what the manual said and waited 10 minutes with the key in the on position. The car started after that; however two weeks later, the car does the same thing. The process is repeated to reset the theft system. But now I wonder how many more times this problem will occur and why hasn't anything been done about a recall. . Read more...

Also, the fuel pump was replaced, because gas was not going from the tank into the engine, the cruise control occasionally would not work, the service engine light would come on intermittently, and electrical components, such as the radio and windows stopped working.
The car is a 2003 chevy Malibu. Occasionally, the "theft system" light will turn on for no reason, and the car will not start. The manual reset is to wait 10 minutes and try to restart the car. This was discovered after several expensive repairs, including fuel pump and ignition, were done. It has been inconvenient and sometimes dangerous to wait around for 10-30 minutes to restart the car. The theft system is flawed and there needs to be a recall to help owners fix this without having to put hundreds or thousands of dollars into fixing things that will not resolve the problem.

2003 chevy Malibu: the theft light comes on and the car will not start for a period of time. This happens just about every day, and we have to wait for the car to start. Car failed to start. A local mechanic was aware of the problem that gm was having with the Malibu's. He showed me how to turn the key to on for 10 minutes and then the theft light would stop blinking and you could then start the car. This past year it has been happening about daily or every 5 to 6 times that you go to start the car. Mostly on short trips of less than 2 miles. I contacted 2 local chevy dealers and they claim to know nothing about the problem! I have been told to bring it in and they would check it out - at a charge. What if this happened in an area that was not safe for my family or me - we could not start the car and would have to just sit there for 10 minutes!.

Car would not start , theft lamp flashing, went online and found issues with gm theft deterrent system[pass key] many others are having same issues, also some claim the car quits on them and they have to wait 10 min. To restart car. Even in my owners manual it states that this system may fail. And it gives a procedure to follow. Car may or may not start//recommend fix is a new ignition switch/passlock sensor at a cost of 500. 00 to 800. 00 dollars to the consumer I feel that gm should replace these on an as needed basis under warranty for any one who encounters this quitting//no start condition may cause accident if car just shuts down while driving????.
I own a 2003 chevy Malibu. In the last 6 months, the theft system light pops on and doesn't allow me to drive my car. I found out if I turn the key in the on position for 10 minutes, the light will stop flashing and will allow me to start my car. This has happened 4 times now where my car will not start and I have to do the 10 minute wait for it to restart. My car is the only means of transportation for me and my husband who is severely disabled. I have read online that this is a problem that has occurred to hundreds of chevy Malibu owners. I need my car to function correctly. What if I have to take my husband to the emergency room or doctor and my car stops running? I believe chevy knows about this problem as they listed the 10 minute remedy in their owners manual. I would like chevy to fix this as it appears to be a ongoing problem with the chevy Malibu.
For the second time in two years, as I started my car the theft system light came on and the car would not start. The dealer says that the ignition has to be replaced due to the pass key theft system not recognizing my key (the original key) and breaking the ignition. This has left me with a dead car alone as a woman at night. This is the second time this has happened and I have had to replace the ignition.
The theft system (passlock) engages on my car for no reason. The first time this happened, back in 2003, shortly after purchasing my car. I was at a bank, with my young daughter, getting money out of an atm. After returning to my car, the vehicle would not start. I had to pay money for a tow, and the mechanic charged me $800 to replace the fuel pump. Car did not need a fuel pump, it only needed the theft deterrent system turned off. I know this because the mechanic called to ask me how to do this. At the time, I had no idea. I now know that the $1000 I paid for tow and fuel pump were a total waste of money. Since 2003, this theft system engages for no reason, 2-3 times per week. It is insane. In order to dis-engage it, I have to wait 10 minutes sitting in my car; sometimes with my young children. I have read thousands of complaints for this problem, dating back to cars made in 1996. I cannot believe gm has not been forced to issue a recall for this worthless theft system. I wonder what genius felt it necessary to force someone to sit in their car for 10 minutes, key in the ignition, to reset the theft deterrent system. I'd rather my car be stolen! while I am sitting in my car, waiting for it to start, me and my family could be kidnapped, robbed, killed. This is insane. If it cannot be made to where it does not malfunction, they should just not put in on vehicles. Or, they should only make you wait a mere 1-2 minutes with the key in the ignition. 10 minutes is an insane amount of time to have to wait for this to reset.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu. While starting the vehicle, the theft passlock sensor and the ignition lock cylinder lights illuminated and the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was able to start after ten minutes of holding the key in the ignition and restarting the vehicle. The failure recurred approximately 15 times. The vehicle was taken the dealer where it was confirmed that the theft passlock system malfunctioned and the remedy was to replace the ignition. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
Started in 2005 when car was bought used, auto theft system light will come on and soon after car will not start did this for 5 years straight off and on then completely stopped for 3 years now has started back up in 2013. This is very annoying afraid car won't start when needed for an emergency. Also when put into park key will not come out until you mess with shifter and you hear the click of it going into park.
