3 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2017

Yesterday I was driving on a straight road with a few turns in a rural community. All of a sudden the theft system light starts flashing, my speed drops by force, my steering wheel tightens, and the engine shuts off. Thankfully the driver behind me was not up to speed as he had just turned onto the street after me. Otherwise, he would have slammed into the back of my car. I put the car in park and started my routine of trying to get the ignition to turn over. This process calls for me to put the key in the igntion, turn it to the right, and wait for the board to light up. Once it is lit, the car usually starts again. This is the first time the engine was shut down when the theft light starts to blink. In the past I have had trouble getting the car to start when the light comes on. I have had several ignition switches replaced at the suggestion of their chevy technicians but each spring/summer I continue to have this costly problem. The managers and technicians seem to think that this is not a big issue and that I will need to continue to replace the ignition switches because the car thinks that I am stealing my own car. The only way for me to get the car to start up again is to put the key in the ignition and turn it to the right without actually starting the car. After 5-10 minutes the electrical board lights up and then I am able to start the car. While this car is a 2003 model, I have had this issue since the car was new but gm refuses to do anything about it. The only thing they have done is to replace the key fobs but that obviously is not the issue for many of their customers.

11 Ignition Switch problem

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu that I purchased new on 12/27/02. The ignition switch had to be replaced on 7/23/2014 at 70,328 miles for $307. 13. I would like gm to at least pay this amount. There is a gm 14350 recall on this car. In talking to gm they would only consider paying for this, if the problem was caused by rotation of the ignition key I am a man 71 years old and have owned many cars, most purchased new. I keep most cars 10 years and over 100,000 miles. I have never replaced and ignition switch until now. This problem took about 3 months to diagnose. The initial problem developed when the cruise control turned off while in use. It was very intermittent and not predictable. Then the check engine lite came on. The codes indicate a problem with the oil pressure sending unit and the cruise control. The next time the check engine light came, there were no codes. The next set of problems was the power window, ventilation (ac and fan), and radio would not work. The main indicator of this problem was the fuel and temperature gauges would not work. I would get various warning lights after starting the engine including abs, battery and others. The problems got worse as the temperature got hotter. Half way between milwaukee and appleton, 100 miles into a 200mile trip, we stopped at a rest stop. Upon returning to the car, I couldn’t get the fan or windows to work or eliminate the battery warning light. Fortunately, the back windows were open and inch when we left the rest stop. About 10 minutes after leaving the rest stop, everything came on. The car became unusable because of these problems. Taking it to and independent shop the owner was very patient as day after day, nothing would fail. Finally on a hot sunny day with the car in the sun, I was able to get the car to fail. Replacing the ignition switch fixed all these problems.

Ignition switch and gear shift lock up and cannot shut engine off or get key out. Cannot put gear shift into park only reverse. Wrecker had to be called the last time it happened and tow to dealer. Dealer had just worked on the car and replaced the ac control panel for the second time since new. You could hit the dash and get the ac on and sometimes the key out of the ignition switch. This all cost me $ 1,118. 00 this last time. Ignition switch was always trouble to work with. Wife was stranded several times at shopping centers in the past two years with these problems of key switch and ac off. Hit the dash and hope to get ac on or key out. I would like to commend your company for making a durable product. However, I purchase a 2003 chev-malibu in 2004 from carmax-raliegh, n. C. According to the carfax, there was only one previous owner. I purchased the extended warranty for only three years and had the vehicle serviced by rick hendrix Chevrolet in durham, n. C. After the warranty expired, I would take my vehicle to a certified mechanic in norfolk, va that I have dealt for the past 20 years. Consequently, I would have repairs done and he kept the car running as required. However, about year 2010, during regular maintenance - the check engine light came on, followed by the service engine light - then the vehicle would start but no display on the dash and no electrical functions worked? about 5-10 minutes later with car still running - the dash would light up and electrical functions operable. My mechanic was able to eliminate to check engine/service engine displays with required maintenance. However, the dash display and power loss continued? he decided to replace the ignition switch and shortly afterwards the same problems reappeared? now I have two separate keys, one for door/trunk locks and one for the ignition. Presently, even after maintenance, the vehicle has started missing/putting or possibly losing power? I contacted gm (800)222-1020 and (800)630-2438 and was told that my vehicle was not on the gm recall list? can you confirm that information and the reason why it is not on the list? do I really need to wait until my family is injured or worst before a defect is acknowledge?.

Safety issue. The car went dead several instances at stop sign, when making a turn, and while driving. On July 2, 2014, I did contacted gm at 800-222-1020 about the ignition switch recall for Malibu 2003 and they told me that I would receive a letter to take to a gm dealer but I never received it. I did call then again and now I was told that the VIN was not being recalled. Yesterday, I did replace the ignition switch as I can not risk a major accident or loss of life. If you send to my address a self-stamped envelope I will send you the ignition switch that was replaced so you can make your own opinion. I am very upset of this game with the life of the consumers, I read NHTSA recall number 14v400, but I suggest that you google: theft system chevy Malibu 2003 and see the truth, so how can this happen after the Ford explorer? who regulates this mess with the ignition switch?.

Cheverolet must take responsibility for costs incurred by owners who must repair fuel pumps and ignition switches.

We started having different problems with the fan not wanting to work for the air conditioning, lights not wanting to work and failure to start. We had it fixed by a local mechanic on 5/21/2014. I feel like this ignition switch recall from gm needs to be extended to older vehicles and that the key fob is a cover up for the bigger issue.

32 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2011

We own a 2003 chev Malibu, sold and serviced in canada, but manufactured at gm's lansing, michigan assembly plant. Chev Malibus are not yet included on the gm ignition switch recall list, but in oct/11 we had exactly the same problems reported by those vehicles currently on the recall list: for perhaps 5 seconds, a total loss of all power (engine, lights, power steering, power brakes, etc. ,) while driving on a highway at 60 mph, at night. After that 5 second delay, all power resumed, (lights, engine, etc) and the car operated perfectly for the rest of the drive home. A day later, we again had a total loss of all power, this time while turning a corner at slow speed. The loss of power steering and braking made it very difficult to avoid an accident then. A couple of days later, on 25 oct/11, I had my ignition switch replaced at my local gm chev dealership, at a cost of $416. 51. At no time did the dealer mention any known problems with these ignition switches. In light of the recent recall, I contacted my gm dealership, who stated they could not comment on whether the replacement switch is potentially faulty or not - and how would dealers know, if gm replaced the original switches without changing the part number? were dealers told to get rid of the "old stock", or to return it to gm? the dealer stated that, if and when my vehicle is added to the current recall list, they would "replace the replacement". In other words, I could be driving with a faulty switch - a potential danger to myself and to others. . . . And, to date, gm apparently doesn't plan to do anything about it. I'm out $416 and may still have a defective ignition switch. I recognize that your department's authority doesn't extend to canada. However, although my vehicle was sold and serviced in canada, it was manufactured in lansing, michigan - like hundreds of thousands of other chev Malibus.

34 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2011

The ignition/passlock system problem of intermittent no start that many others have with the 2003 Malibu left me stalled in traffic. Lucky for me there was no accident (not yet anyway). I have been dealing with this problem for a couple of years by doing the 10 minute reset as described in the owners manual. I took it to the dealer who replaced control & cable binding. Replaced floor shift control. Replaced shifter cable & ignition switch cable. The problem remains. I basically gave up complaining to the dealer and went back to the 10 minute reset procedure. A couple hundred dollars down the drain. My son asked why the car was never fixed. He found the technical service bulletin describing the exact problem as I and many others have with the 2003 Malibu: it states that "engineering would like to inspect any vehicle before the actual repair has been performed where the repair diagnosis leads to replacing the ignition lock cylinder for an intermittent or hard no start type of condition or customer complaint. " (NHTSA item number 10002562) (service bulletin #022003). My son complained to the dealer and was told they fixed the stalling problem. They said I didn't mention anything about the ignition lock cylinder. My statement in the service order reads as follows: owner states can't turn ignition lock cylinder at times. From what I have learned, the ignition lock cylinder should have been replaced. The ignition/passlock system is defective and should have never been installed in the 2003 Malibu. Gm knew this but installed it anyways. They even have a remedy in their owners manual describing the 10 minute reset solution. Gm creates the problem and then have unsuspecting customers pay $$$$$ to fix something else instead of fixing the real problem. This defect is an unsafe and an unethical scam!!!!!!!!!!.

35 Ignition Switch problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2010

Was not able to get keys out of the ignition switch. The keys would stick, and I was not able to remove the keys. Took it to a Chevrolet dealership, and they had to replace the shifter and knob assembly. I am the original owner of the vehicle and used the original keys. Furthermore, this car had low mileage, 56,040 miles, for a seven year old car, and was barely driven to have to have such a serious repair. I see that there is some kind of technical bulletin for this issue, but Chevrolet should have paid for the repair instead of charging me the $346. 56 to repair a known issue that should have been recalled. I have had so much trouble with my 2003 Chevrolet Malibu that I would never purchase a Chevrolet or gm product ever again. Most of the issues that I see in the service bulletins are issues that I have also had. After finding this website, I hope to let other Chevrolet Malibu owners know of the potential problems that can occur with their vehicles, and also hope that one day, something can be done to make Chevrolet liable for all these issues.
