While driving the lights went dim and the steering was hard, the information panel on the car said "power steering", the car finally stopped running and had to jump start the car. 2 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact stated that the steering wheel was getting progressively tight and that there was an abnormal noise that continued as the condition continued. The dealer was notified several times while the contact was waiting for months to receive the parts for NHTSA campaign numbers:14v252000 (electrical system , electronic stability control , exterior lighting , service brakes, hydraulic , vehicle speed control), 14v153000 (steering), 14v224000 (power train). The contact stated that while exiting a parkway the steering wheel was tight while traveling less than 5 mph and upon pulling out the contact had to make an abrupt left turn. The contact noticed that due to the failure extreme force had to be applied to the steering wheel and while turning, another vehicle crashed into the front right passengers side and the air bags did not deploy. The driver and the front passenger did not sustain injuries. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was notified of the power steering failure and refused to remedy the recall repair for the power steering. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. Dyd.

3 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2014

I have had my car since 2011. I didn't have any problems with my car until 2012. My steering shaft broke and it was replaced at a chevy dealership. All was fine until this year in March, where my steering was becoming very hard to do. When I turned my wheel, it would make sounds as if it was breaking and I needed to use a little more force to turn the wheel. As of may 15, 2014, I took my car to a chevy dealership where a family member asked if they could see if any parts on my car was on recall and there are several recalls for the Malibu. My steering is getting worse by the day and my car is driving horribly. I have a 4 yr and this is my only transportation to and from work. I'm afraid to drive too far because the steering wheel might get stuck and may cause an accident. I wanted to report this before something actually happened.

6 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2011

While driving my power steering went out. It felt like wet cement in the steering column. I have driven a car with out power steering before this was much harder. I pulled over opened the hood to see if anything was loose. Could not find anything. Once I restarted the car it was fine. 30 mins later making a left turn it goes out again, turn car on and off and it works again.

7 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2010

Upon acceleration using the gas pedal, the car loses total control of its steering. All engine lights and failure lights go on. Sometimes just making a simple turn at an intersection, the car loses complete steering capability. This has happened at various speeds, including on the highway at 50 mph accelerating over a slight incline or at 10 mph at an intersection while making a left or right turn. I noticed trouble with the steering when I first bought my car under warranty but it wasn't as severe. Just when backing out of a parking space the steering was tight, but the dealership could not find the problem. I have had the short rack steering gear, steering rack, intermediate shaft, and serpentine belt replaced but to no avail. . Read more...

8 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

2004 Malibu. Steering was hard on one side and soft on the other. Too it to dealer. Dealer fixed it by computer. Now both sides of steering re equal - but - it continually wants to steer on its own to the right. It will not hold a straight line, unless I keep my hands on the steering wheel. If I hold it loosely, it will veer right into whatever is on my right side. Dealer said this is normal.

9 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2010

I have a 2004 chevy Malibu maxx. On Jan. 26, I got into the car. My check engine light came on and the information center said to check power steering. The steering was a little hard. My friend was going to check it when I got home. By the time I got home that night, the problem was not occurring and the lights were off. This has happened a couple times since. Then today, 3/2/2010, I got in the car. It was very difficult to steer until about 15 mph. It was less difficult between 15 and 30 mph, and o. K. , but not normal, over 30 mph. When I got to work, I had to move my car after a few minutes. When I got into it and moved it, the steering was fine. I am reporting this because of the similarity with the cobalt steering issue that has caused a recent recall. The symptoms sound exactly like the news reports, but the Malibu isn't on the list yet.
