Driving grand children home from school, turned in driveway and car made loud chatter and clunk sound like something was coming apart or falling out. When the noise happened steering wheel kept spinning freely! received a letter saying this exact thing may happen would be fixed free of charge under 150,000 miles. Car is at 170,000 they will not repair saying extended warranty issue and not recall. Mind boggling how they can be allowed to issue recall for steering motor that may cause vechile to steer harder a safety issue and when your in the process of turning and steering wheel spins freely isn't a safety issue but extended warranty issue. Had we been turning as we were a short time before that at a busy intersection we could have been injured or killed!! this seems completely idiotic how hard steering that could happen such as like when a car didn't have power steering was declared safety issue but extended warranty issue when you lose the ability to steer and steering wheel just spins. How many injuries or deaths have to occur before they are made to fix this issue. They want $900 for part alone. How could they possibly put a mile limit of 150,000 on something that can cause crash causing injury or death!!! this dangerous condition needs to be made public and corrected. Because manufacturer neglected to put an umbrella seal a very cheap part peoples lives are at risk and it is a costly repair due to neglect on manufacturers part!!.
When trying to turn left or right it won't turn and makes a popping noise in steering shaft ? under car inspection noticed that steering spline or shaft where it meets the yoke it just spins when turning wheel! wheels will not turn. Can't drive. This car is my daughters and I'm doing the research for her.
Airbag light continues to come on. I've had this car since 1/31/2014. Used. No accidents. Power steering went out. Took to GMC for recall. 2/2014 claimed it was fixed. 11/2014 steering wheel hard to turn. . Now the tires won't turn to the right. Loud clonking noise when I turn the steering. Tires won't turn. . Near accident. Had car since 1/2014 . Took for recalls 2/2014 7/2014 transmission died. 1000+ in repairs. This car is a safety hazard and I am still paying for this car. Something needs to be done so that I don't have to continue to come out of pocket and waste my money.

For some reason the entire interior trim on the door panels have come unglued and detached from the doors. It looks terrible. I recently received a recall notice regarding a knocking noise in the steering. Of course, this has been going on for years and now the notice says my car must have less than 150k miles on it. I dare say there are not many 2004 vehicles with less than 150k miles? mine is around 164k. We use to spray grease on the joint where it hits when the steering wheel is turned. I had been told a dealer would want to replace the entire rack n pinion on the vehicle, but that would not correct the problem. Guess I am just out of luck.
I purchased this vehicle in 2006 with 17,000 miles at the carmax superstore in naperville illinois and have had several serious issues since. The leaking sunroof with the innumerable failed attempts at repair. The leak has never been resolved and I have resorted to covering the vehicle with a tarp during inclement weather. The constant clicking noise in the steering when moving the steering wheel back and forth and the severe stiffness in the steering wheel when curb side parking between parked vehicles. The intermittent ignition failure, the vehicle will not turn over unless you depress the accelerator slightly. There were countless futile attempts at repair for all these defects through out the years of warranty and extended warranty coverage. The failed attempts of correctly diagnosing and properly repairing these defects by the englewwood auto group in englewood new jersey have left me unsatisfied and super frustrated. Today I am writing because the operators seat has now tilted to the right and is leaning against the center console. There was nothing of significance that occurred while driving that immediately alerted me of this problem, I was simply adjusting the seat when I noticed that the seat was rubbing against the center console. Upon inspecting underneath the seat I observed that the right rear corner does not rise when engaging the electric seat controls. The angle of the lean is so bad that it affects my posture and pains my lower back. I am also afraid that the seat will completely collapse while I am driving. When the seat is lowered all the way down it does level to its acceptable norm, but at 5 feet 4 inches tall I cannot operate safely that low to the floor. For a vehicle that is driven on average once a week it is plagued with some serious manufacturer defects that the dealerships' service department is unable or unwilling to repair.
Knocking noise in the steering column, noise and difficulty turning. Noticable play in the steering of the vehicle. Occurs several times a week, I refuse to drive my car on the freeway or at high speeds in fear of electric power steering going out.
2004 chevy Malibu standard clunking noise when steering. Steering wheel locked up on me when shifted in reverse. Power steering displaying on dashboard, vibration coming from steering at 65mph.
Power steering issues with 2004 Malibu lt. I had this problem with my first Malibu and my new Malibu is starting to show the same tell tale signs of power steering failure. It begins with a clicking noise while turning the steering wheel. At any time the power steering will completely go out. Turning of the motor and restarting the vehicle will temporarily solve the problem. My first Malibu was still under warranty and they had to replace the entire steering column twice. The Malibu I currently have is unfortunately not still under warranty but I feel this is an ongoing safety issue that needs to be addressed before there are serious injuries or deaths. There are many online sites of owners who have complained of this ongoing problem and it does not appear to be limited to the 2004 model but also newer models. Gm needs to make this right with all the money we are spending trying to keep jobs in the USA.
Chevy Malibu maxx 04 steering catches in hard left or right turns with shifting and grating sounds. Complain since new with steering shaft replaced (about 40,000) and other work. Numerous complaints about this issue. Car has 90,0000 now and the noise and steering issues have been getting worse. Dealer says about $300 to replace with no guarantee that it will fix the problem. I feel it is a safety issue and am afraid to drive the car.

I took vehicle into goodyear for oil change and told them more steering noises are happening.
I have been having problems with the power steering just going out for no reason at all. There is a slight clacking noise and the steering wheel fights with you to make a turn. Some days its fine and other days you fear for your life. I see online thousands of complaints about this ongoing problems. No recall!!! what do we have to do to get a recall. . . . Blood shed! there has been tons of wrecks, near wrecks, and money out of pocket to fix this problem and money out of pocket on damage to the auto because of this! what do we as a customer do??!!!????!!!!!!!! right is right! its general motors that should fix this before someone has to die!!.

The contact's spouse owns a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. While driving at various speeds and making a turn, the contact heard a clunking noise coming from the steering column. The vehicle has been to the dealer three times and they replaced the steering column under warranty, the ps gear, and the intermediate steering shaft; however, the clunking noise still persists. I have had an ongoing complaint about a clunking noise in the steering wheel of my 2004 Malibu maxx. Almost as soon as I got the vehicle I felt a faint vibration in the steering wheel and have taken it to Chevrolet on numerous occasions each time they claim they could not duplicate the problem. This knocking happens everytime I turn the steering wheel and it is getting louder and louder. Now that it is out of warranty gm is telling me to once again go and have it diagnosed, which cost about $90 and they do not guarantee to fix it at no cost. I talked to a csr and she does not admit or admit to knowing about this problem. I referred to campaign # 04050a 12/2004 posted on your website.
There is a rattling noise in the steering wheel when turning like something is loose. Dealership serviced the vehicle twice before hearing the problem. Dealership indicated a part needed to be replaced and ordered the part. The consumer has been waiting for 4 months for the dealership to receive the part and install it. Pe04031_cat.
