A police officer pulled beside me and said my brake lights were not working at all. Brake lights will come on and stay on or will not come on at all. Took this vechicle to a mechanic and it has to do with the connection with the bcm. Thought this was recalled but there is no recalls on my vechicle. I asked some other owners of the same model and they are having the same issues. This is a huge safety hazard.

7 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2017

When driving brake light continue to stay on. When pressed they go off and pressing to floor they come on but when released around 6 seconds later they come on again. Was taken to dealer ship to be fixed for a recall . Worked for less than a month and it continues again. Had brake pedal switch replaced and it still continues. Now I'm getting the lights coming on saying esc off and also a traction light. In my opinion all chevy Malibu's should be recalled and done right. Worst car I ever owned. Fix your mistakes please. These things I'm describing happens anywhere I'm driving constantly.

8 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2017

Purchased 2008 Malibu in early 2017. Previous owner stated brake lights come on and off on their own. Had it checked out was told that their was a recall on it. Had recall 13036 work done 3/31/17. Still had problems. Took to dealer on 7/03/17 was told they couldn't duplicate and no codes they recalibrated bpps. Still had problems drove it that way took it back to dealer on 7/06/18. Was told same thing and same work performed. Same problem occurred. Read online that recall didn't solve problem. On 9/10/18 dealer stated been having a lot of same problems with other cars they replaced bcm & brake pedal sensor. Had work done. So far seems to have worked. Never felt safe while driving with brake lights on and while stopped no brake lights on. Can't believe that the manufacturer would let this problem go on as well as dealers.

Brake lights illuminate during normal driving when brakes pedal is not being pushed. Brake lights then turn off when brake pedal is pushed and don't come back on until brake pedal is pushed at least half way down. Cruise control doesn't work when this is happening. Problem happens when driving at any speed. This has been happening for about a month this time. Was previously fixed under a recall but the fix is not working.

10 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2016

While driving, the vehicles brake lights will suddenly illuminate even when the brakes are not being pressed. When this happens, I tap the breaks and the lights go off, only to turn on again within a few seconds of no longer being pressed. Also, in my dash panel I am receiving a "service traction" and "service esc" warning. This occurance has happened before and was corrected in 2014 after a recall was issued - however the same issue is happening again.

11 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

Brake lights remained illuminated even if brake pedal was not pushed, both while stationary and in motion. Traction control was disabled while in motion. Body control module was malfunctioning and had to be replaced. Brake lights remained illuminated on all roads, in all conditions, and at all times. Traction control was disabled primarily on city streets but sometimes on highways. The Chevrolet dealer service department said the cause was a malfunctioning body control module and had to replace it. The problems with the car are the same as those in NHTSA campaign number 14v252000, although a search by VIN reveals no outstanding recalls. The vehicle is currently undergoing repair and I will have repair invoices after the repairs are completed.

12 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2016

Took vehicle to local dealership because brake lights were not working. They informed me that vehicle had a recall on the brake pedal position switch system. They performed the recall. Brake lights worked for about 2 months, then quit working again. They then informed me that since the recall was already completed that this repair would be out of pocket. They informed me that the body control module was defective and I would need to replace this. I purchased the module, had gm dealership program it and they replaced the brake light switch also. Now the brake lights only work under hard braking. They have recalibrate do the brake pedal position sensor numerous times. The lights will work as should until vehicle is parked for 2 hours or more, then they start only working under hard braking conditions. Recalibrate the sensor and they work fine until vehicle sits parked.

16 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2014

Someone following me to work informed me my brake lights were on as I was driving on the highway but when I stopped at the street light, they would go off. Now my engine light is on and the warning to service my traction control and esc system is on. The cruise control isn't working properly all the time. I googled the brake light issue and found a recall for my year of car that can cause my other issues. I called gm and was told by [xxx] that my car is included in this and transferred me to the nearest dealer to make an appt for my car repairs. The dealer said there isn't a recall for these issues but I am under a recall for the power steering recall! they do not have the parts but I can keep calling and checking . I then called gm back spoke to [xxx] who advised there isn't a recall for the brake light yet . It is upcoming soon they are in the first stage of this . No time frame when it will happen. I asked what do I do in the meantime with this unsafe car. She said I can get it fixed at my expense. I questioned if I would be reimbursed once they issue the recall. She answered no promise they will. Later that day the dealership service manager called saying gm told him to call me! we could make an appt to check my car, pay out of pocket , keep receipt , and if the recall includes my parts, I will be reimbursed or I can try to hold out for recall. I am beyond frustrated. I'm under an active recall but no part to fix it and this other in beginning stages. This light issue happened to me in October 2013. I bought a new brake switch, had it replaced by a certified mechanic. Now months later I have the same brake light issue but also my cruise control, esc warning and traction control. The best part when I asked [xxx] at gm what if I am in an accident because you are dragging this out. She replied you should call us back after your accident. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

18 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

My wife and I were travelling on interstate 40 going around 75-80 mph when the cruise control disabled by itself. I could not get it to engage and noticed the tail lights were illuminated. The only way they would go off was to apply a little pressure to the brake pedal. The cruise control will still not work and the brake lights are staying illuminated. Also when braking at high speeds the entire car occasionally shakes and does not brake properly. I have been fortunate enough that I have not needed to apply the brakes in such a manner to avoid an accident.

19 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2013

Brake light comes on without my depressing brakes and a delay when brakes are actually pressed. I took car into the local dealer in town and told could n't locate a problem and to bring car in the next time as the problem was occuring, also cruise control turns off while I'm driving and have been getting service error messages . Just 5/10/14 I noticed another Malibu with the same problems, while this car was acclerating and going aroung other cars it's brake lights were constantly on.

Brake lights come on when the brake pedal is not depressed. When the brake pedal is depressed slightly, the brake lights will go out. I replaced the brake pedal lever sensor. This cured the problem for about a month, now the problem has returned. The dealer did a parts warranty on the switch and supplied at no charge. I picked it up today, but have not installed it yet.

21 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

Everything everyone has been complaining about is wrong with my car. The alarm doesn't work. We have to manually lock the doors sometimes. Brake lights comes on and off as it wants. Just recently, 05/15/14 the car had been really slow at picking up. It was really hard to get the car to reach 60mph. But some days it'll pick up ok too? I hope they fix these issues sooner. Really disappointed.

23 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2013

As I was driving the driver behind me told me that there was something wrong with my tail lights. I then noticed while driving that the brake lights stayed on and when I did press down on the brakes there was nothing. This poses a great problem in that I could have been rear ended due to the drivers behind be me not knowing if I was braking or not. This needs to be recalled. My family owns 3 chevy's, but I am unhappy with the problems I am having with this Malibu. This may be our last chevy purchase.

24 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

The brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal isn't pressed. When the brake pedal is pressed the brake lights are not illuminated. Taken vehicle to dealership more than 3 times in order to relearn the brake pedal position. This affects the traction control, as it turns off because the traction control doesn't know the brake pedal position.

26 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

About a month ago I noticed that my brake lights were stuck on. I didn't pay it any mind since then until yesterday 07/01/2013. A friend of mines was following me home and advised me that my brake lights were on the entire time. I checked to make sure I wasn't riding with the emergency brakes on. Now my car seems like it is pulling and there is a burning smell under my car. I'm not quite sure if this is a known issue or not. I did find an article from the huffington post that stated that there were a few complaints/issues regarding that. What could be causing this to happen. Why hasn't then been considered a recall?.

27 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the esc and electronic traction control warning lights illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that the break pedal was depressed but the brake lights failed to illuminate and the brake lights illuminated independently without the break pedal being depressed. 28 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2013

I was driving my vehicle and noticed my check esc check traction control light came on in my driver notification panel. When I got home I noticed that my rear brake lights were on and I wasnt even in the vehicle pressing on the brake. So I took it for a test drive and noticed that the brake lights would come on without me hitting the brakes and then when I did hit the brakes the brake lights would not come on. This has been in the shop for the fifth time now for the same thing. Huge safety concern when your brake lights are not working.

29 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

The brake lights, including the third brake light, were observed on during normal operation, when the brakes were not being applied. This gives a false indication of intended operation.

30 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

Whilst driving home one night I noticed that my brake lights were on, however I was not applying the brakes. I then pressed the brake pedal and the brake lights turned off. Once I let go of the brake they came back on after a few seconds. At the same time, I received an error that read along the lines esc service traction. My husband and I found a forum where other Malibu owners seemed to be having the same issue, so we removed the panel on the passenger side floor to check for any corrosion, then replaced the panel. The problem stopped, however this issue is re-occurring, and has occurred several other times since then. I always receive the same esc service traction error each time this happens and I am not able to use cruise control as the brake lights are being engaged without the pedal being pressed.

31 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2012

On several occasion I have notice that my brake lights come on without me even pressing the brakes. It also lights up and when I press the brakes it goes off. I have spoken with other Malibu owner and they complain of this same brake failure. It is very frustrating and not safe.

32 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2012

When I would be driving my brake lights would be illuminated. When I would brake at at stop, my brake lights would not illuminate. I was almost rear ended many many times. Traction control error kept coming on for a minute and then would go off. I've gotten it fixed and the problem has reoccured again. Although there is now a recall for these issues for the 08 Malibu the dealership says my VIN# is not included.

33 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Brake lights come on without me pressing down the brake pedal.

34 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2012

After purchasing my 2008 Malibu in June of 2012, I have noticed multiple times that my brake lights stay on when acclerating, and turn off while braking. If I push the brake hard enough the light eventually does come on. I took this into the dealership to have it examined, and they did not find anything wrong with the vehicle. This has continued to happen on a weekly, if not daily basis.

35 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2011

There needs to be an official gm recall on the chevy Malibu 2008. My brake lights would not work. They worked in reverse. Every time I put my foot on the brake to slow down or stop, the lights wouldn't turn on to indicate to other drivers that I was slowing down. When my foot was off the brake, the brake lights would turn on. For me, and the family that I drive in this car, I felt this was hazardous. This was not safe driving for me and for everyone around me. If I had to suddenly stop and apply my brakes, I could have caused a serious accident. The brake light issue is only recalled for 2004-2007 Malibu's. This issue has continued on past 2007.
