16 problems related to steering have been reported for the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
: the contact stated the vehicle pulls to the right intermittently. The pulling occurs suddenly and last for only a second. The contact had the vehicle inspected for the problem by an independent repair shop in 2000. The repair shop was unable able to determine the cause of the pulling. The problem continued and the contact called the local dealer yesterday. The dealer was able to determine a possible cause by phone and suggested repairing the steering sensor. Updated 03/17/06.
The consumer complained about power steering problems. Some times when driving and making either a right or left turn it felt as if power steering shut off. The consumer stated that he was told by dealer that there was a device built into the vehicle for protection. The evo (exhaust valve opening) was replaced.
While driving, the steering wheel jerk to the left and right.
While driving on highway steering gets very loose, and wheel feels as though it is going to come off. Took vehicle to dealer while it was still under warranty for repairs, but they could not find anything wrong. Later, after the warranty had expired, the owner found the cause of the problem on the internet, the steering position sensor. Dealer not willing to make repairs under warranty even though the problem was detected before the warranty expired. Manufacturer aware of the problem, and has designed a modified sensor to correct the problem.
When making a slight turn vehicle will jerk. Also, dealer has replaced the electronic steering sensor.
1997 Chevrolet Silverado ext. Cab. 1500 series, at low speed I am experencing intermittent loss in my power steering on left turns.
Faulty steering sensor; replaced one sensor at 16,000 miles or less, the second sensor failed at 31000 miles and replaced. Dealer notified.
While driving at high speed the steering system malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to sway into other lanes. Dealer replaced steering sensors. Dealer cannot determine the problem.

The power steering wheel would lose tension. Would jerk before this happens. Speed is not a factor. Not noticeable at low speed, but at higher speeds. Been to dealer 8 times for problem. Mechanic informed owner it's 4-wheel front steering sensor & repaired it. Problem still exists.
While driving at any rate of speed vehicle severely pulls to the right. Cause unknown. Consumer was informed that a wheel speed sensor was needed.
