Steering Column problems of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

Ten problems related to steering column have been reported for the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2010

Upper steering column intermediate shaft clunking noise when turning or on bumpy road, have to replace this part at my cost. Gm knows about this common defect but there is no recall on this part even though they manufactured 2 replacement shafts to fix this problem. I don't know why there is no recall. Seems a steering issue is important.

2 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving various speeds, the steering column makes a clunking noise whenever a bump is struck or driving over rough terrain. The vehicle was taken to the dealer twice to have the steering shaft serviced. The current mileage was 69,400 and failure mileage was 65,000.

3 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2006

Clunking noise coming from the steering column, can be felt at any speed especially in gradual turns to left or right. Had problem fixed twice at dealer expense as a known problem. Now happening again, after having received a "redesigned" steering shaft. What is the problem? should the steering shaft fail every 20k miles? what if it comes loose, on the interstate, at 70 mph? someone should act to get this resolved premonitory!.

4 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2005

Owner - 02 chev Silverado pickup - VIN 2gcek19v121210683. Recently, I begin to detect a clunking noise coming from the steering column. At times, you could actualy feel this through the steering wheel. I checked several on line consumer sites and discovered this is a documented problem w/ several types of gm vehicles. When I contacted several gm dealerships, I was informed they were aware of this complaint. When I questioned the dealerships further, they informed gm had issued service bulletins on this issue and had also revised the intermediate steering shafts design and replacement shafts are on back order. When I contacted gm,they contend, this is not a safety issue, but readily admited the original design has problem. Gm also contends it is not unsafe, nor are the shafts under recall consideration. I question gms views on this issue. Are these steering shafts being tested or reviewed for possible safety defects? the noise in my vehicle became so unnerving, I decided to have the shaft replaced, rather then chance a failure while oprating the vehicle.

5 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2004

Consumer complained about steering column problem. Consumer took vehicle to Chevrolet dealership, and was told that this problem was not a safety issue. Manufacturer insisted that consumer had to repair the problem and send in the bill, and they may consider it. Meanwhile, the problem recurred, and nothing was being done about it. The front end and steering column knocked at 21000 miles. The dealer filled the column with grease which corrected the problem until the vehicle was out of warranty. The consumer indicated that it sounded like the front end was falling apart. The dealer indicated that a new joint for the steering column is necessary.

6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2004

Truck had less then 25,000 miles when I noticed a 'loose feeling' in the steering when making turns and a discernible bumping. I found that there is a TSB on it(chevy TSB 00-02-35-003a) and had it fixed under warranty- but from doing research I've found that this fix is a 'band-aid' and they really should replace the intermediate steering shaft with an improved model. Concern: very distracting and concerned that it might make me ignore a more serious problem- such as 'loose lug nuts' or something else in the future (thinking it is just the same problem recurring when it is really a more serious problem).

7 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2003

Vehicle began making a clunking noise that could be felt within the steering wheel and steering column. Eventually became a rattle so bad that it was taken to a mechanic who informed us that there was a technical bulletin issued on this problem. #00-02-35-003c. Vehicle was taken to local gm dealership for repairs. It was stated on the n/c invoice that the solution was 'repack steering shaft with grease kit' part #26098419, vehicle had 6,941 miles on the odometer. Vehicle was fine for some time, but began to experience the same issue again. Local dealership was called and we were informed that there was nothing else that could be done. Vehicle now has just over 20,000 miles and is still making this noise and the feeling in the steering column is very bad. Feels as if something is going to fall apart at any moment. We have received no further information regarding this situation and will now try to contact gm to find out if a solution to this issue has been found. It actually feels 'dangerous', like the steering is not 'sure' and very loose and sloppy. We had a front end alignment performed just a month ago but that did not improve this issue. Obviously it is the steering shaft problem again. I feel this should be investigated to find out if indeed there is no safety risk.

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2003

A very noticeable clunk in the front end when turning right or left. Can be felt through the steering wheel and on the floor. This problem has exsisted for over 15,000 miles. Dealer put an extra heavy grease in steering shaft. Only lasted for about 2,000 miles. Several more grease attempts. No improvement. At 35,900 miles new front shocks. Problem is still present. I am concerned as to what may come next. Loss of steering? truck is now out of warranty and I am apparently on my own.
