My son was driving my newly purchased 2010 chevy Silverado 1500 z71 offroad vehicle. He had pulled off the roadway momentarily, and upon pulling back onto the pavement and beginning to get up to speed, the side curtain air bags deployed and the vehicle shut down. He was able to restart it and drove about 50 feet when it shut down again. Of course, all the components to the air bags were in the cabin and he jumped out of the truck where he was stopped and was able to look over the situation. He contacted me and since he was only 31/2 miles from our home, I drove to the location. The air bags were hanging, and the passenger seat belt was locked tight. He had his seat belt on and it was hanging. He said he hadn't hit anything, had just pulled back onto the pavement and the bags went off. The truck eventually was able to be restarted and he drove it home. The deployment cracked the head liner and I have had an estimate to repair the damage and fix the air bags, a total of $4800 that my insurance won't cover due to the fact there were no injuries because there was no accident. Why are there so many instances of this happening nationwide? now I am out almost $5000 for something beyond my control as the dealership where I purchased it won't help either.
My dash was fine on 6-10-15, when got in it on the morning of 6-11-15 the dash was cracked by the airbag. The vehicle is 5 years old but only has 54,000 miles. I am the only owner and it has been well maintained. This seems to be a very frequent problem that is occurring with Chevrolet vehicles. . Read more...
The dash is cracked on the passenger side next to the top left corner next to the passenger air bag panel. My fear is if this air bag is deployed shards of plastic will become shrapnel and injure my front seat passenger.
