Check Engine Light On problems of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado

Two problems related to check engine light on have been reported for the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2018

While I was driving on the highway, approximately 55mph; the check engine light came on; smelled like plastic burning at the same time; I was able to stop on exit ramp as thick black smoke filled the inside. Good samaritans helped me get out as flames were ignited under the hood. Several like Mini explosions accompanied the flames.

2 Check Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2017

With approximately 7800 miles on it, my vehicle was in motion and I was crossing a highway when the engine started to stutter and lost power. I was almost hit by an oncoming semi while crossing the road. I narrowly missed getting hit, the semi driver slammed on his brakes and honked at me as if I had done something wrong. I promptly pulled off to the side of the road, and noticed a check engine light. I brought it to my local shop where they had diagnosed it as a faulty lifter. This is a prevalent issue on many Chevrolet/GMC engines as there are technical service bulletins released on this. I have attached an older (2016) tech service bulletin, but there is an updated one with the following part number: 15-06-01-002f. I would like gm to step up and issue a recall on this as this is most definitely a safety concern.
