The consume states that the parking brake is not holding on 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. This has been an issue for about a month. The owner has taken the truck to the dealership, and they classified it as a normal wear item. They dealer is not going to replace this for free. There is a recall on the manual transmissions but not the automatic. But the owner says that they share the same parking brake system. The owner has contacted the manufacturer, and they were aware of the problem,, and stated that there was no recall. Nhtsa recall 05v161000. On manual transmission. The owner was going to have this fixed, but it will be at his expense. There were no prior problems with the truck. There is about 60% of the brake lining left on the back brakes. The owner is pushing the brake to the floor and it is not working.

Safety issue: 2002 chevy 3500 1 ton dually (53,000 miles). Truck brakes starting acting funny. Take truck dealership for brake inspection. Dealer charge $$ for inspection and informed us that all 4 brake rotors were rotten (beyond repair). Not wore but rotten. Seems they use re-cycled material in their brake rotors. Seem this is a major safety issue because rotors could fail completed due to rot and cause vehicle to lose brakes. Cost of replacement is $2000.
My 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1/2 ton ext cab pickup's parking brake is apparently worn out and will not hold vehicle at all. I have ask the local gm dealer to adjust the parking brake but they told me they are not adjustable (which now I found out was not true) but must be replaced. They told me the rear brakes and parking brakes need replacing much more often than the front brakes. My rear disc brake pads are still in good shape and do not need replacing but the parking brake has not been holding for over a year now. I have found there is an investigation on this exact problem NHTSA action number ea04011. I am interested in knowing the outcome and if somehow I can get repair/correction assistance from gm on this matter. Thanks.
Parking brake on 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has worn out prematurely. Vehicle has 50000 miles, and parking brake will not hold at all. Took vehicle to garage to have parking brake adjusted, and after adjustment the parking brake still would not hold.

Parking brake failed and does not hold when engaged been about a year now and was told there was a recall so I'm waiting to see if this is the case chevy told me my truck was not considered in the recall so I would like to know if I'm the only one with this problem.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Emergency brake does not hold. Consumer contacted dealer, and they stated brake pads needed replacing. Please provide any further information.
Premature wear of parking brake caused brake shoe to wear. Dealer has repaired vehicle. Consumer stated that the parking brake design allows shoe to drop down and contact the parking brake drum while vehicle was moving. This wears out shoe and drum.
Parking brake will not hold vehicle on modest incline.
Park brake will not hold. Vehicle has rolled over 3 times with park brake applied. Dealer replaced park brake once.
Emergency brake was not holding when engaged. Vehicle was taken to dealer, and informed dealer that emergency brake was wearing out. Consumer would like to know how could it be when it was never used. Gm informed consumer that this was a design problem and if the brake was replaced, the same thing would occur.
Emergency brake shoes are wearing out faster than they should, to the point where consumer can't use emergency brake . The inside drum area of the rotors was rusting causing premature brake shoe failure.
Vehicle rolled forward while parked and brake was applied, owner replaced parking brake. Consumer had to jam the transmission into park to stop it from rolling. The dealer informed consumer that parking brakes wear out every 15,000 miles.
Check out my other listed complain on this site, the odi id # is 745532. I'm just posting another complaint because I haven't heard a word from NHTSA regarding this issue. Silverado abs modulators need to be recalled! they are getting water in them. There are numerious listing on this site regarding this issue. Nhtsa needs to investigate this issue! it is ridiculous for consumers to take the hit on a failed, poorly designed piece of equipment. The more technology advances the more theses electronic units cost to replace. The direction we're headed in is that ten years from know when a electronic unit fails at a thousand miles over and out of warranty, it will have to sit in the driveway because the average american wont have the cash available to fix it. I had a abs modulator fail at 54,000 mile, the unit would not turn off, even with the key out. I had to pull the fuse to stop it. The dealer would not do a xxxx thing about it and neither would gm. The dealerships are rteplacing alot of these units. That means there is a defect (poor design) with this unit. Anybody with this defect should get a new and improved unit for free regardless of warranty! I have a more descriptive explanation of the problem on this site, again the odi id # is 745532. I'm an engineer and it pisses me off when a company hides behind closed doors when an issue like this arises. It pisses me off even more when a government agency (NHTSA) that is suppose to protect the consumers saftey fails to contact me regarding this issue. I'm beginning to wonder if NHTSA actually read these complaints. I submitted odi id 745532 five or six months ago, may be even longer than that and still no word. Any body that wants to contact me regarding this issue an email me at jabrant@email. Sae. Org.
Vehicle rolls back when parking brake is applied. Chiming alerts consumer that it is engaged. Parking brake has been malfunctioning since 6 months of purchase. Problem has progressed. Dealer was informed of problem. This vehicle was taken to the dealer who said there wasn't anything wrong. Consumer has been in contact with the gm customer service, but, is having a hard time getting a resolution to this problem.
The emergency parking brake doesn't work. Consumer took vehicle to shop for repairs, and dealer released the emergency parking brake in order for the consumer to drive the vehicle home. When consumer got home, took the emergency parking brake off as was suggested by the dealer.
Whenever driving the vehicle there is a loud noise coming from the brakes and the pedal vibrates. Also, when applying the brakes the pedal goes straight to the floorboard. Sometimes the parking brake doesn't work. Consumer had the vehicle in the shop five times for repairs, and the dealer still doesn't know what the problem is. Since then dealer changed the brakes/ rear drums/front pads the rear shoes and back drums twice, and they still can't determine the problem.
