37 Wheel problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Purchased the used vehicle originally at 42000 miles. Have taken impeccable care of it. Acual dates of incidents are unknown due to the fact most have been ongoing. Brakes failed due to abs. Fixed twice by gm under the safety recall. Both fixes were bandaids (dealer cleaned and applied a "special" grease twice, they never replaced the abs sensors. Third fix I paid out of pocket to replace the sensors, and since then the abs has been ok. Brakes failed due to rust and corrosion (all lines and 2 calipers had to be replaced. Fuel pump failed, fuel lines failed due to excessive corrosion, fuel tank straps failed due to excessive rust and corrosion. Slow leaks in 3 of 4 wheels due to excessive rust and corrosion in the rims.

43 Wheel problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

The front wheel hubs and bearings, including wheel speed sensors, are failing on these pickups. This is, apparently, a known issue and gm refuses to do anything about it. Why not? this is a blatant safety issue.

44 Wheel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/10/2011

Noticed vehicle vibration at slow speed and persistent but not as severe at highway speeds. Not being a mechanic I thought it felt like a tire out of round or tire out of balance. Took it to a firestone shop to inspect and correct problem. Mechanic found that the right front bearing was falling apart and needed to be replaced. The tires were ready to be replaced they had 60,000 miles on them with a little cuping but fairly even wear. Without stopping to check the tires the bearing most likely would have failed at highway speeds, which probably would have prevented me from filing this report.

45 Wheel problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/02/2010

Had been out of town for week-end. Was returning and traveling north on I-65 towards montgomery, alabama. Exited I-65 north to make a gas stop at greenville, alabama. Upon reaching yield sign noticed loud scraping, crunching, popping noise coming from left front of vehicle. Stopped immmediately at service station. Checked vehicle by moving backwards and forwards. Noise continued. Spent the night at hotel. Called repair shop following Monday morning. They replaced front wheel hub assembly. They have old parts. Mechanic said we were lucky wheel did not come off on interstate and cause bad mvw. Vehicle has 35,000 miles on it. No noise was coming from wheel until exiting highway. No motion in steering or any indication that there was a problem. Was told by several other mechanics that this is not uncommon incident. That the assembly is not servicable and that it just goes bad immediately without warning. Have had report that one vehicle had both wheel hubs go out within a few weeks of each other.

46 Wheel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/18/2009

Chevy 2005 Silverado 68,000 miles. Bearing assembly went out on left side. When I heard a loud "clunk" noise I towed it to the dealer. Mechanic said wheel was about to fall off and called it "catastrophic" failure. Now 4 weeks later other side is going out. This could have killed me. I do a lot of highway driving, only reason I discovered it was because I drove with windows down and heard the noise. This could have killed me if I had the air on and windows up!.

48 Wheel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/28/2005

Consumer stated while driving on I-66, around mile marker 58, the tire blew out. This happened at 6:45 am. Consumer felt the steering wheel shook, and he felt the rear of the vehicle would fall. This was the driver's side rear tire. The tires had been rotated approximately 2 weeks ago. The tire was previously on the front driver's side. Consumer had a picture that he will send in. The entire sidewall blew out. This occurred on a 2004, Chevrolet Silverado. This was the original tire for the vehicle. Consumer contacted Chevrolet that he had been dissatisfied with general tires in the past, and tried to have the dealership change them at the time of purchase.

49 Wheel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

On 2 separate occasions I had flat tires with my 2003 chevy 2500hd 4x4 truck with aluminum wheels. Fortunately in both cases it was on my driveway rather than on a public road. The aluminum wheels appear to have electro-chemically welded themselves to the wheel hubs. I could not remove them (after removing all lug nuts of course) with a 12 pound sledge hammer & wood block. My local chevy dealer informed me they use a 20 pound sledge hammer. I requested some form of anti-seize material be applied to the wheel/hub interface but was told this is normal for this vehicle. I even drove the vehicle for a few feet with no lug nuts installed to break the wheel free to no avail. I called chevy roadside service who facilitated the tire change. This is ridiculous had this failure been on a highway my life would have been endangered by having to work under the vehicle while only supported by the manufacturer supplied jack; while traffic passed nearby.

50 Wheel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

52 Wheel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 04/07/2004

Passenger side wheel cracked. I was not near the dealer and took off the wheel and had it welded at shop that specializes in cracked wheels.

53 Wheel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/15/2003

Center hub caps will not stay tight. Have had a loosening problem since new. Dealer provided a bag of new plastic nuts. On last trip the left front hub center cam off and ended up in the north rim of the grand canyon. Dealer installed a new center hub cap and another bag of nuts. Some of the new nuts wouldn't tighten and had to be moved around to different locations to tighten. I believe the problem is due to the stainless over-lay spot welded to the steel wheel, thus limiting the thread contact with the lug nuts. The plastic nuts only grab the steel lug nut by 1 or 2 threads. My window sticker says chrome style steel wheels. This statement is mis-leading. They are a steel wheel with a stainless hub cap welded to the wheel and a plastic center hub with plastic nuts. The service manager was suppose to check on this problem but never heard back from him. Please note: I am a mechanic. I know how to install these type of centers. I do not over tighten them and they are installed by hand. I noticed the problem when the truck was new and I drove it home. I waxed the wheels and noticed the loose centers. These could be dangerous to a pedestrian if one flew off struck them.

54 Wheel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/28/2003

While driving 40 mph the front passenger side wheel separated from the vehicle. As a result, the driver lost control, and drove into a embankment. Driver sustained injuries to both legs and left arm.

57 Wheel problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/01/2002

I heard noise from the front left wheel. Jacked up the truck and found the entire wheel loose. Took the truck to the dealership, they torqued the hub nut and said it was fine to drive. Took the truck on a trip and had constant problems and noise from that side of vehicle. Returned the truck to the dealer and was told it needed a new hub but was ok to drive. Drove to a conference 200miles away and broke down. Towed the truck to a different dealer and was told that both hubs needed to be replaced. The truck has 75k miles on it. I was told by service advisors at both dealerships that they had seen this problem several times on this model truck. I asked if gm was looking at a possible recall and got a negative. I called gm customer service and filed a complaint (case# 1-60491961) and was politely told that since I wasn't the original owner and the truck was out of warranty "tuff beans. " I told the rep I couldn't understand why gm would want to wait for an accident with injuries to look into this type of a problem. No response. If the loose, or improperly torqued, hub nut caused the hub to fail, seems like this should be a safety issue for gm to consider. Ts.

58 Wheel problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado

59 Wheel problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 12/23/1999

There have been no failures, but I had to put "one" in an earlier field to get this thing to work/submit. Isn't it better to know of a problem before an accident? on page 6-72 of the owners manual for 2000 Silverado trucks it indicates a wheel lug spec. Of 140 ft lbs. That seems unusually high for an aluminum alloy wheel (normally 80-100). I called gm customer service, and they on 12/23/99 confirmed that number. I checked the actual torque settings as the truck was delivered, and noticed that most of them were about 90 ft lbs. I checked with my dealership to see what the shop manual indicated, and was told that there was no reference in the shop manual, but I suspect the service writer did not know fully about how to use that screen. I am going to use 95 ft lbs as my spec. I am concerned that 140 ft. Lbs. Would result in a wheel lug breaking when in a hot and stressed situation.

60 Wheel problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado

62 Wheel problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado

Wheels bend causing tire blow outs and vibration.

63 Wheel problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Consumer states the rear disc brake caliper housing is of such size, shape and placement as to capture debris between the housing and the aluminum alloy wheel, the trapped debris serves to score the surface of the aluminum wheel causing it to eventually separate, this has happened on one of the vehicles, however after examination consumer found similar wheel scoring in other vehicles (1500, 2500 and 2500hd series).

64 Wheel problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

Tires will not stay balanced due to problem with wheels. Dealer says hole in center not round. Replaced tires and balanced several times, but will not stay balanced.
