4 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2014

I was driving on a down hill road with a stop sign at the bottom. I began to press the brake and the pedal went to the floor. I could not get the truck stopped and ended up in an empty field to avoid a wreck with impact. There was a huge wet spot on the street where by brakes failed. Very scary with my young children in the truck with me. The break lines were all rusted and had given way. According to the repair shop (and the internet) this is a known issue with these vehicles. I am also now having an issue with my instrument panel going crazy. The speedometer will say I am traveling 110 when I am rolling up to a stop sign. The fan blower will be on 0 and it will blow out at full force and will not turn off, even after the engine has been turned off. This ultimately results in a dead battery. I have had to have several jump starts. This issue according to my mechanic is a "known issue" with this vehicle. However, my VIN # produces no results for recalls. So like my silverado break down on the side of the road issues, the search results have left me stranded as well, only this time I am not walking down the road with my small children.

5 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

This was not a wreck but could have been. Complete brake failure on my truck. Lines completely rusted out. Googled this and have seen many complaints on this. Chevy does not make the lines anymore and have redesigned the braking system on 2004 up trucks. $3100 to replace if you can find them. Now I'm stuck with a truck that is not safe to drive. No brakes whatsoever. Thank god it was early Sunday morning. Brake pedal went clear to the floor. Had to slam it into 4wd and put trans in low then neutral and then ran off the road to avoid a collision.

7 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2012

My wife and I were commuting to work the morning of 4/6/2012. A car in front of us put their blinker on to turn left. . . I applied the brake and to my surprise the brakes failed!! there was absolutely no warning that there was a problem and with the low miles of the truck and being the original owner I knew that proper maintenance of this vehicle has been done. By the grace of god I was able to barely miss hitting this vehicle at a speed of 45mph. If the car had to have come to a complete stop I would have no doubt plowed into the rear of the car with more than likely resulting in very serious injuries. After the incident and taking the truck to the garage I have learned that this is somewhat becoming a common occurrence with certain gm vehicles produced between 1999 and 2003. This must be made public before more incidents happen resulting in injuries and fatalities taking place!!.

8 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2011

While under hard braking the drivers rear brake failed just above axel. After the repair during the test drive 3 lines ruptured on the drivers side frame rail just below the drivers feet next to the abs module. I see that there has been a NHTSA action number : ea11001 already started on this problem.

9 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving approximately 5 mph, the anti lock system engaged and the brakes failed. He stated that the brake pedal almost extended to the floor. He applied excessive force to the brakes in order to stop the failure from occurring. He called the dealer and was advised that there were no recalls associated with his VIN. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure occurred daily. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000. The current mileage was 70,120. Updated 12/21/bf updated 12/23/jb.

10 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2009

2003 chevy silverado lt 1500 4wd ext. Cab. Brakes changed x2 with 35,000 miles on now. Lines rusted causing complete brake failure. Abs caused the vehicle total failure to stop. This all happened in approx. One month. I feel very fortunate that I did not kill myself or someone else. Cost approx. $600. 35,000 miles. This is a travesty. What are you doing about it????.

11 Brakes Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2008

2003 chevy silverado anti-lock brakes repeated cause failure to stop, especially on slippery surfaces. The algorithm does not work. While driving / coasting at 25 mph, a car made a sudden lane change in front of me. I applied the brakes on a snow covered road and the anti-lock brakes activated, causing me to roll much more rapidly toward the back of the car. I swerved into a parking lot opening, but the rear driver side scraped a small roadside tree. The anti-lock brakes also activate when I apply the brakes while driving over rough roads. I have frequently rolled into intersections when this occurs. It's the worst on slippery roads. I conducted several tests by driving a fixed speed and attempting to stop in as short a distance as possible on a snow covered slippery road. If I apply brakes up to the point where the wheels want to lock, but I don't press hard enough to activate the anti-lock pulsation, I can stop in the shortest distance. If the anti-lock brakes pulse, I roll much further. If I let off the brakes a little during the pulsation, the truck still stops in a shorter distance. This flaw is not as noticeable on dry pavement. When I notified the dealer, they told me that's the way they are, and there was no recall, etc. I hope someone issues a recall before serious injury or death occurs. There's a good chance I will disable the anti-lock functionality, at least during winter driving. The anti-lock brakes on other similar vehicles suffer the same conditions from my investigation. The truck would be safer without this malfunctioning system.
