1 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2016

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the instrument panel fractured. The contact was unable to read the gear positions. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 81,000.

2 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

The speedometer is erratic, displaying 40, 50, 80 mph running, sitting still in park. Then will peg to 130 mph when driven. Later, it will eventually correct itself after cranking 4, 5, 8 times and work properly temporarily. Then repeat. This is a common, known problem with these gauge clusters and Chevrolet div. Refuses to fix at no cost because the truck is outside the timeframe stated in "special policy # 07187", but it meets the mileage and VIN criteria. To the best of my knowledge, the truck did not fail during the stated timeframe. Cost of the repair is $560 and I believe Chevrolet should fix it at no cost to the owner.

3 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2013

Was driving about 60mph and speedometer went to zero then wouldn't go past 15mph after that. Sometimes it works and then not.

4 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2011

I was operating the vehicle on the interstate. The speedometer showed 70 mph; however, everyone was passing me. I pulled over to investigate but the speedometer would not go lower than 30 at a complete stop. It did go back to 0 within a few a days; however, it is again showing 20 mph at a dead stop. Dealers/mechanics have given me three different stories as to how to fix the problem. Per a lot of other similar reports, this appears to be a defect with the vehicle and should not be at my expense. It is a severe safety factor. I've always been a chevy silverado man but I'm feeling disappointed in gm by not backing their product like they used to do.

5 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2010

Speedometer not working properly. Does not read accurate speed. When needle starts to rise, the motion is not constant. The needle instead "ticks" up upon acceleration.

6 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2010

The speedometer reading is very erratic and does not display the correct speed any more. Speedometer reads 30mph + while sitting still. Gm dealer claimed that the vehicle is outside the 70,000 mile replacement period since the vehicle has 80,000 miles on it.

7 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2010

2005 chevy crew cab. Speedometer problem. Incorrect speed reading. 17 year old son now drives truck and concerned about safety and tickets. Is gm going to recall this obvious safety hazard. Concerned parent.

8 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

Speedometer works intermittently.

9 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2010

My vehicle is 2005 chevy Silverado 1500 purchased in 2007 with mileage of approximately 47,000 miles at the time of purchase. Upon driving thevehicle for three months, my speedometer started sticking intermittently, but would reset. Since, my speedometer sticks on a daily basis, sometimes all day. The only remedy has been to turn my vehicle off and back on, where as my speedometer goes down at five mile per hour increments until back at zero. In the last three weeks, my tachometer has also malfunctioned and does not read at times, therefore making it impossible to know how fast I am going nor how high my engine is idling or increasing/decreasing in speed. There is no apparent event leading up to the failure and my conclusion is that the instrument cluster is defective in its entirety. In March of this year I was traveling in oklahoma during a sudden snow storm in which traffic was traveling at an estimated 20-30 miles per hour. I accelerated to an unknown speed, however not excessively. I lost control and my vehicle slide across two lanes of traffic opposite the lane I was in and I slide into a ditch in which my bottom air dam was torn off. I was able to repair the damage however I only accelerated because I thought I was traveling at ten miles per hour. When my vehicle came to a rest in the ditch, my speedometer was still at ten miles per hour. A state trooper did assist me by getting a tow truck, however no report was filed by me. I believe that if I had know how fast I was going, this may not have happened. It is inconclusive, however I do believe the malfunction is a safety concern. I have priced the replacement, which is the only remedy, at or about $450-700 and this is not an isolated malfunction. I have researched and found that there are many, many cases of this very defect in the same model truck from the same manufacturer and believe that it should be a recall, not a "special provision" du to the manufacturers knowing since 2003 about this particular defect.

10 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

Our 2005 chevy silverado's speedometer broke at 57, 218 miles. We called a dealership in the area and were told that there are no current recalls for this and told me that they wouldn't be able to do anything for me. I told them that I do not think a speedometer should break when the vehicle has less than 60,000 miles on it. I found a recall online, but evidently it doesn't cover my vehicle. . . Only certain 2005 silverado models. . . . I don't feel I should have to pay for yet another thing to break on this vehicle (hub assembly twice, actuator broke 3 times before the dealership would actually listen to us and fix it correctly). I want to file a complaint to be pro active and report the problem in the hope that gm will do something about it and start making their vehicles better.

11 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2010

I have a 2005 chevy silverado and all the dashboard gauges stopped working. When I called gm they said they knew about this problem, but never sent out any notices. They would cover parts and labor for mileage of 80,000 and below. My truck has 102,200 miles. I feel gm should stand up for their products no matter the mileage. It is nothing that I did to cause the gauges to stop working.

12 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

Purchased a 2005 Chevrolet k1500 silverado used in 10/2009. In 01/2010 the speedometer stopped working at approximately 72k miles. Dealership advised us that this is a known problem in several gm full size trucks and suvs 2003-2007 model years. Gm will not fully cover the cost to replace the defective part. We argue that a speedometer is not a wear and tear item, that the presence of multiple complaints by thousands of consumers prove that this part is consistently failing. We argue that proper operation of a speedometer has a direct impact on the safe operation of a vehicle. We believe that gm should be required to fully cover the cost of the replacement at no expense to the owner of all affected vehicles. If a speed related crash resulted and the liable party was driving an affected vehicle, gm would share in the liability of that loss. This again points that this is a safety component that is consistently failing in thousands of these vehicles.

13 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2009

Around December 2009 I noticed that my tachometer was working intermittently. The problem has now moved over to my speedometer which is registering my speed +/- 25 mph off the actual speed. This is worse than me texting while driving as I am always having to pace my speed with over vehicles or trying to mentally gauge my actual speed.

14 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

While traveling at a speed of 60mph the speedometer would increase to around 100mph. After coming to a complete stop the speedometer still registered 35mph. I was able to reset the speedometer by cycling the key on and off 5 times. I've had the same issue at least 3 times now. This should be a recall issue before someone gets hurt or killed, not to mention all the speeding tickets being issued for this defect.

15 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

The speedometer on my 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 z71 with the 5. 3 liter v8 stopped working at about 93k. The speedometer in now stuck at 120mph and does not give me a correct reading.

16 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2009

2005 Chevrolet silverado speedometer stops working and/or sticks between 40 and 60mph at rest. This appears to be a common gm truck issue and it's a common topic on the gm message boards as well. Gm apparently knows of the problem but no recall has been issued. This needs to be recalled as it is a very common defect. Your immediate help is requested. Because we are unable to gauge speed accurately this has created a dangerous safety concern that could place others (the public) at risk.

17 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2009

The evaporated canister went bad. The mechanic said normally this should never go bad. 1 week later the speedometer fails. The cost to repair the canister was 290. 00.

18 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2009

Just bought my 2005 Chevrolet silverado 24 hrs ago. Speedometer went out. Reads 120 at all times. This is very dangerous , also illegal. Something needs to be done to resolve this issue. Gm should have quality product !.

19 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2009

2005 chevy silverado truck with 79,000 miles started experiencing problems with the speedometer jumping and sticking. We brought it to the dealership and was told $538 to fix it. However, after searching the internet to fix myself, I discovered that many people have experienced the same problem and there is a lawsuit pending because of this problem.

20 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2009

The speedometer in my 2005 Chevrolet silverado quit working, or will register inaccurate speeds. My truck only has 54000 miles on it and I know that they are "extending" the coverage on the 03-04 models but not the 2005's. This failure could easily cause speeding tickets or worse, accidents. Gm is fully aware of this problem and they need to correct it. I am trying to get mine fixed through gm but they will likely only pay a percentage of the very expensive repair.

21 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the speedometer displayed inaccurate readings and constantly shows the incorrect speed of travel. The failure has been occurring for two weeks. He feels that it is a safety issue because he does not know how fast he is driving. The current and failure mileages were 51,640. 22 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

I have a 2005 chevy Silverado 1500 the speedometer shows it is going 120 mph sitting at a stop sign. From online research I found that this is an ongoing problem, since 2003. My truck has 38,720 miles on it currently. It creates an unsafe condition, since I can not determine the correct vehicle speed.

23 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2008

2005 chevy silverado speedometer stopped working. I was driving and the speedometer showed 20mph less than actual speed. When I stopped it showed 120mph. Gm had recall for this for 2004 and some 2005 models, gm says my VIN number is not covered.

24 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving the speedometer began to malfunction. The vehicle registered a speed of 120 mph while driving 35 mph; however, in a school zone it registered 80 mph. The speedometer recently read 0 mph and would not increase beyond that speed. The dealer stated that there was no recall or warranty available. The dealer also stated that the repair cost would be over $500 not including the labor costs. The manufacturer has not been notified. The current mileage was 64,964 and the failure mileage was approximately 64,000. Updated 03/10/09. The consumer stated the speedometer was stuck at 20 mph. Updated 03/10/09.

25 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2008

At 57,055 my 2005 chevy silverado speedometer quit working and since I had received a letter about a class action suit I referred to this letter however it only covered the 2003 and 2004 models. I feel that the speedometer is an essential part in the safety of a vehicle and therefore am paying my $200 deductible to have the speedometer fixed under my extended warranty plan, but I also feel that gm is aware of that this problem extends beyond the 2004 models and is failing in their customer service by not extending the warranty to cover all affected vehicles.

26 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2008

Speedometer failure. Was driving 2005 Chevrolet silverado and speedometer starting going higher until it was showing 120 - at stop signs - showing 60mph - not working correct. Vehicle has 65,000 miles on it.

28 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2008

I have a 2005 chevy silverado. Last winter my speedometer began to malfunction (stick). Now it is stuck at 120 mph all the time. This is unsafe and appears to be a problem among a lot of the 05 silverado's. There is a recall on the 03 model and 04 model. I've done research online and there is a lot of people at the moment waiting on a recall.

32 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2008

Speedometer failure on 2005 Chevrolet pickup which could lead to ticket for speeding or eventually accident. Dealership said this was a common occurrence on these vehicles. Found out that there is a recall for 2003 and 2004 models. This is an expensive item for me to pay out of my pocket. Why is there not a vehicle recall for 2005 models when this occurs all the time? my vehicle currently has 69,000 miles.
