When driving all gauges go to zero, truck doesn’t illuminate which gear it’s in, warning lights come on (service 4wd, service stabilitrak, service traction control, reduced power steering, service traction control, service trailer brake system ). When not driving if these issues show on the dash when parked and the car doesn’t illuminate which gear it’s in, it does not crank over, does not start, there is no clicking noise either like if it was a bad starter. All the dash lights, gauges, radio goes black as if I turn the vehicle off instead of on. This has been happening since around 2020-2021 in colorado. It was in a shop for over a month with no resolution. In idaho in 2022-2024 in a shop for a month with no resolution, and now CA in 2025. No mechanic shop can figure out what is wrong, no “certified gm” shop or “certified gm engineer/technician can tell me what’s wrong. I have had the following replaced already and still having issues. Body control module (bcm), the transfer case control module (tccm), and the brake control module (bcm).
Issue is based off of this service bulletin, but gm has failed to call a recall on this for coverage. I was driving my daughter to softball practice. Every few minutes there would be a "stabilitrak" message showing on the driving information area. Then in slower speeds my dashboard screen would blank out and then go back to carplay. Then once I approached a parking lot at slower speeds my vehicle lost total power and shut down. Then had to switching the gear to park, then turn off the ignition key, then wait a few seconds and turn the key on to start the truck. It started as normal and was able to park in the parking space. Very scary and this is a very serious issue, I could have been in an accident with my daughter. This has to be addressed, I can't be the only one having this issue.
Steering assist is reduced drive with care.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the message "service power steering" was displayed, and the steering wheel was difficult to turn in either direction. Additionally, the abs and stabili-trac warning lights remained illuminated. The cause of the failures were not yet determined. The local dealer was informed of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 114,800.
Engine shuts down on its own causing steering wheel to jerk and almost locks preventing control. Has been doing this for three weeks and is now getting much worse. Seems to do when making slow speed sharp turn. Almost hit another car in intersection yesterday due to steering control loss. I have seen numerous mentions of this on the internet but seems gm does not have a fix. The truck is now dangerous to drive as it can completely shut down in the middle of an intersection.
Brakes fail at low speed forward and reverse.
While turning vehicle at slow speeds the trailer warning,no trailer on vehicle, stability control hill assist radio and steering stop working as well as vehicle will stall out. Depending on when it happens it may stall while turning into traffic. I have searched the issue and found there is a ground problem under dash near windshield. It has happened multiple times like 15 as of this date.
What happens is my "abs light" comes on and when I pull into the driveway. . . The truck shuts everything off. Locks the wheel!!! lights off!! it's deadly seriously!!! stabilitrak stops the truck from moving!!! this needs fixed bad!.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 50 mph, the power steering assist warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stopped the vehicle. The contact had not turned the vehicle off however, the power steering functionality returned. The contact stated that prior to the failure, the vehicle lost electrical power intermittently while driving various speeds. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
Complete loss of electrical system power and engine power, vehicle stalls and coast to a stop. This has happened seven different times in the last 4000 miles driven. Possibly due to faulty ground connection electric power steering system and or stabilitrak I don't know but it is very dangerous. And there has been many other people experiencing this on silverado facebook groups.
When driving the truck it has a continus pull to the right side.
The stabilitrak system is malfunctioning on my vehicle. It does it intermittently but can be available for inspection. When the stabilitrak system malfunctions, the vehicle will either shut down completely while driving, violently jerk the wheel to one side, or it shorts out the system for brief seconds while driving. Once the system malfunctions the "stabilitrack" warning light comes on as well as the check engine light and traction control light. I have had the truck looked at on more than one occasion. The dealership I purchased it from first said they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle, but after showing them the video they came down to a bad power steering control module. I am having a second mechanic look at it to see if there is another solution. I have been reading this is a common problem on these vehicles and it is caused by a bad ground under the dash.
18v586. Gm's own number for this recall is 18289. These are for the 2015 silverado’s . The 2017 Silverado 1500 are doing the same thing as the recall from above describes . My wife had almost accidents cause of this . I almost had an accident today as well getting off the freeway . I know a lot of people are having these problems as well . Gm needs to own up to this mistake they did with these trucks . They should be held responsible for this defect on this truck .
Dear NHTSA, the truck has lost electrical power several times over the past few months but only 3 times while driving. Today it completely shutdown while making a right hand turn at a busy intersection causing the loss of power steering and braking while narrowly missing a car waiting for the traffic light it took both hands to turn the wheel and both feet to push the brake pedal enough to stop on the shoulder. Prior to this latest incident I removed the engine compartment splash pan, checked the starter and ground connections and all seemed well. I then unplugged, cleaned and reconnected all electrical connections in the engine compartment and fuse box. The complete shutting down of a vehicle and its electric system while driving is a very dangerous matter. Sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Service power steering message comes on and off at random time. Almost got into a accident a couple of times. One example is I was getting off the freeway and the exit made a u shape turn. The power steering message came on and I lost power steering and it became so hard to steer. The wheel almost jerked out of my hand and almost went straight into the wall had to use my whole body to turn the steering wheel. Checked grounds and connections all that seem good also checked for codes and there were no active codes.
While turning steering wheelat low speeds. The steering wheel will jerk out of your hand and lose power. All the electrical power on the dash will go out for a few seconds and return the steering will return. Also, this is happening over three times in the past week and almost causing me to crash into other parts cars. There is a recall for other vehicles in the 2015 model with the same problem, campaign #18289.
While turning a corner at a reduced speed the power steering went out and I couldn’t turn the wheel to the right. I almost ran into a car pulling out of the street I was turning into. A few seconds later the power steering came back on.
Was driving down the road at 65 and the truck shut down completely and had control of steering that time. Put truck in neutral and it restarted. Then was in a gas station getting gas then went to pull out after filling up and the wheels jerked and almost broke my wrist the instrument cluster said stibilatrac and shut down. Went to restart then the instrument panel said lower driver window then close . It did this one more time in the gas station parking lot.
Hello so I have a 2017 Silverado 1500 and I was driving on the highway a 70 miles by hour with my enclosed trailer and the steering wheel start getting hard and I slow down and tried to get out the highway so when I tried to turn to my right the steering wheel make a clicked couple time like getting locked, so was hard and scary because I can't turned it this is the 3rd time that happens to me !!.
While turning out of a parking space. I went into reverse, when I tried to turn the steering wheel it turned the other direction. The dash went dim, stabilitrac message came on the information display and the truck completely shut off. I had no lights no anything. I popped the hood touched the +battery terminal and lights came back on. Was able to drive home.
1. I lost power steering, power breaks, all dash lights/power and I believe air bags. The truck is available for inspection. 2. The first time I was traveling at 65mph in moderate traffic, it was very difficult to pull over to safety. The second time I was traveling at 50mph on a very windy road with heavy traffic. I almost hit another vehicle head on with several vehicles traveling in both lanes. The last time I was backing into my carport and almost bumped I to my house. 3. No, I called onstar the first time, they did a system check and said everything was good. I called a dealership the second time and they confirmed I had no open recalls and explained it would be difficult to troubleshoot because it was intermittent. 4. I will be calling back to the dealership in the morning to make an appointment. 5. I got the audible chime, the airbag light came on and the "trailer break" message came on the info center. But everything goes back to normal.
Stabilitrac service light comes on and dash lights flicker for a second, radio sound cuts out a second, then power steering is lost until putting in park or restart of vehicle. Just like recalls for other Silverado 1500s. Happens intermittently.
I am the owner of a 2017 chevy silverado with a little under 50000 miles. I have had an issue with the computer system occasionally re-booting while driving. Also, on occasion, I will get a warning on my display for "trailer braking system" for a fraction of a second. I have mentioned this a several service appointments and inspections, but the dealership was never able to pinpoint the problem. On the morning of Monday, February 28th, I dropped my children off at school, pulled up to the edge of the building and the "trailer braking system" warning flashed for a split second on my display. I proceeded to the stop sign. As I was making the turn into traffic, the computer seemed to have re-booted several times in the period of a few seconds. However, this time, my steering locked in place while making the turn, putting the front of my vehicle just over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic. The doors locked and unlocked several times, several chimes went off, the display flashed a few times, and then, after a couple of seconds, I was able to steer and pull back into my lane. I promptly called chevy support to report the issue, as I believed this to be an important safety issue that chevy would be extremely concerned with. I was disappointed to find that the operator was not interested in taking my information, she suggested that I contact the dealership for service, which I already was in the process of doing. I explained that I was calling to report a safety issue to chevy, not to merely complain, and offered my VIN number. She reluctantly checked the last 8 digits of my VIN number for known recalls and again suggested I call for service. Dealership said that my power steering module needed calibration updates. But, they are not sure that this will solve my issue. I see many complaints like this online and chevy is not proactively scanning for this computer issue even though it could be deadly in traffic, especially on the highway.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that after coming to a complete stop at a red traffic light and attempting to turn the steering wheel in either direction, the steering wheel would forcefully jerk to the opposite direction and the dashboard instrument panel would blink off and the message “stabilizer" was displayed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified. The failure mileage was 52,000.
I bought my 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 certified pre owned on 11/04/2019 shortly after I purchased it I started having problems with it. From brakes to lights. An took it in for the recall on brakes and steering. After that I've not had cruise control, and the stabilitrak warning light has been on. And just about a year ago while driving an pulling trailer, I lost communication to transmission, electronic brake, park assist, trailer brakes, ect. An was forced to stop! after taking it in to dealership to fix it, they did which lasted not even a month and done it again numerous times leaving me stranded. Now just last night 11/23/2021 while pulling my trailer, as I came to a stop sign I hit my brakes and all trailer brakes locked up bringing me to a stop (trailer brake on dash has been set on 0 since they haven't worked since purchased ) I had to unhook trailer wiring to make it home. As I took off I lost communication to transmission again and trailer brake system warning chime kept going off repeatedly, lost dash gauges, causing transmission to get hot. As it was stuck in a certain gear. Your defective wiring/ electrical system has fault and potentially caused a serious accident, and is going to cost me an enormous amount of money to fix. Also the torque converter has been acting up for a year, forcing me to purchase a tuner just to stretch the life of transmission. This vehicle is not safe to drive on highway! this vehicle is life threatening. Putting my life, my familys life and innocent peoples life's in danger! problem needs resolved or reimbursement/ new truck. A $37,000 truck should not be life-threatening. This truck has spent more time in a garage than on the highway. Solutions have to be done. Why pay for a $37,000 truck you can't use or risk everyone's lives!.
While attempting to turn left at an intersection, the power steering locked up after about 2 inches of turn on the wheel. I was forced to abruptly brake. Tried again, still wouldn't turn. Third try, it released. This could have resulted in a serious accident, as I was angled across the on-coming lane and stopped. If I had not braked, I would have went head on into a light pole. I listed my complaint on carproblems. Com, and there were dozens of complaints on this same steering issue associated with the 2017 chevy silverado, some resulting in accidents with injury.
Warning on dash servive power steering.
While driving at low speeds the power to the shuts off and seconds later turns back on. This happened multiple times while in slow traffic and turing into a parking lot. When the power shuts off I lost the ability to steer and brake.
Lost all communication to transmission control module, electronic brake control module, trailer brake control module, broken can bus wiring, lost windows, can not drive!.
When driving my 2017 chevy silverado at lower speeds my steering wheel locks up when turning bringing my truck to an abrupt stop, once in the middle of a street. While the steering wheel locks all the electrical and lights on the inside of the truck shut off and on and my stabilitrak message pops on my screen followed by service trailer brake. It started happening just here and there about a month ago but now it is happening every day. Im scared to drive my truck this is getting dangerous! going to have to take it into the dealership ASAP.
While making low speed turns the power assist fails, momentarily resulting in extreme difficulty turning/maneuvering. This happens no matter what type of road surface is being driven on (paved, unpaved) and does not happen all the time resulting in situations where I have momentary loss of control.
I receive many error lights every time I drive my 2017 silverado. Lights include stabilitrack and traction control disabled, trailer brake systems service, and power steering diminished. The safety complaint is due to the power steering actually shutting down and a sharp loss in engine power and hard shifting. On many occasions I have had to leave the road until the problem went away. I have gone into quirk Chevrolet on many occasions but they have not been able to find the problem. I have recently contacted Chevrolet directly and they have set up a case and will keep open until this is fixed.
Two separate occasions with no warning when the vehicle's steering wheel was turned to the left, while in motion, would stop during the turn and jerk back the opposite direction and power to the vehicle would be lost for a second then have power restored. The first time I was backing up and had to turn the steering wheel left to avoid hitting an object, at this point the steering wheel locked up and jerked back in the opposite direction and the headlights flickered, radio screen went blank, and the climate control lights went out but all power came back on after a second. The vehicle did the same six times while trying to back up. I have a video after I backed up and parked and the issue repeated itself so I could get a video to show for a repair. The second occasion was when I was on a 25 mph two lane road. I was turning left onto another road and after coming to a stop to let a car go by I hit the accelerator to get the vehicle to move and the issue happened again but this time the engine cut out, door locks cycled, and lost all power to the vehicle. When I lost power my vehicle was half way into the on-coming lane of the road I was turning off of. Vehicle is at the dealer now at an attempt to fix the issue, the dealership has seen the video I have and the mechanic could not replicate the problem but found issues with the electric steering while doing test drives. As of now I'm not aware of the issues that were found. Mechanic told service supervisor that the electric steering needed to be updated in the computer to smooth out the issues. Since the original issue could not be replicated, not sure if this will be the fix. If video evidence is needed please email me and I will send video.
Driving down the road and power steering goes out when I hit a bump in the road. Comes back in when turn of the vehicle and turn it back on almost through me in the ditch a number of times. Just losses all power steering all at once.
I was driving down a city street at around 35mph, steering got real stiff, and the steering wheel wouldn't move back to center, shortly afterwards all power steering assist went off. Was able to get to safety but things would've been a lot worse if there was traffic.
