general problems of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 - part 1

My vehicle was serviced for the chevy l87 recall a couple of thousand miles ago. It currently has 13343 miles on it and I was driving down the road and then all of a sudden the engine just stopped and my vehicle lost power leaving me stranded on a state route xxx in [xxx], which is a dangerous route with nowhere to pull off. This issue has been going on for years now and chevy needs to make this right. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Got my truck back yesterday from in shop for 2 weeks from being repaired. Got to red light just stopped my engine shuts off. Dash shows engine/transmission problems. Exact same thing happened two weeks ago. Had to get towed into dealer again this am.

Not that anything has happened to my truck but im genuinely worried that something bad will happen with my motor. With it being the 6. 2l l87 motor. My truck was manufactured July 2024 which is 2 months after gm's cut off. I love the truck but im worried about going to and from work, what if I was to turn and this truck dies and I go into oncoming traffic? what about everyone else driving their own vehicles? I hope something is done because im really thinking about getting rid of this truck in fear of something bad happening. Thank you.

This complaint is in relation to the investigation into the gm l87 (6. 2l engine) investigation. I own a 2024 Chevrolet silverado with the l87 engine. I had my truck inspected through the recall a few months ago and the engine passed at that time. The engine oil was changed by the dealer per the recall at that time. On August 23, 2026, I was traveling at highway speeds on an interstate highway when my truck began to lose power, downshifted hard three times and died in the middle of the highway. The truck shifted to nuetral and I was able to coast off the highway into a rest area. I attempted to start the struck but nothing happended. I had the truck towed to a dealer. They inspected it on August 25, 2026 and determined the engine had a catastrophic failure and needed to be replaced. I am currently waiting on a replacement engine.

This vehicle is a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 featuring a 6. 2l v8 engine and a 10 speed transmission, currently at 58,136 miles. The vehicle was experiencing a severe shudder. An official gm technical assistance case (tac) engineering case was opened on July 30, 2026 confirming a verified dfm cylinder deactivation or valve train malfunction. However, on August 21, 2026 the dealership falsified the repair log by printing ‘concern not duplicated’ to the manufacturer, while physically installing an unapproved aftermarket range technology dfm eliminator module into the vehicle’s engine harness to artificially override the factory emissions and cylinder deactivation programming to mask the mechanical failure. This vehicle is part of the active NHTSA engineer analysis ea26005, and the manufacturer’s dealer network is actively using unapproved third party hardware shortcuts to evade mandatory warranty repairs before the vehicle’s 60,000 mile factory powertrain limit expires. I called gm to report and request a warranty freeze and regional field engineer to go to a different dealership and was told they can’t freeze a warranty because the tac was closed on August 28, 2026 as resolved even though it was not resolved.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph uphill with a boat hitched on a trailer, while depressing the accelerator pedal, the engine overheated and the vehicle was pulled over and the idol warning message was displayed. The contact pulled over to the right side of the road, however the vehicle lost power with the boat trailer wheel still on the highway. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was 21,000.

Had the motor replaced under recall / warranty at a certified chevy dealer. ~41k miles. 6. 2l l87. Graff chevy of chesterton indiana. After long lead times and getting the run around, the truck was "done". Picked it up and many things were still wrong/incorrect. They were able to take care of it. A day later, the truck died in the road. Towed to another graff dealer. 2 days later it was found to be a bad ground. Fixed. Fast forward ~3k miles later. The transmission went out and locked up on a main roadway. Towed to another dealer (west herr chevy orchard park NY). They found the root cause was due to transmission cooler lines coming loose from faulty installation during motor swap. There were also many other items found that were broken or loose under the hood of the vehicle from faulty workmanship. I am being told it is not covered under warranty because of the previous dealer's workmanship (graff indiana) I was able to get the truck put of the roadway and to a safe place, but this very well could've caused an accident, and I would like to document it.

6. 2l engine stopped working on the highway.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the transmission upshifted as intended; however, the vehicle then suddenly downshifted to a lower gear. No warning light was illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that the failure worsened and jolted the occupants inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed; however, no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 47,278.

Check engine light repeatedly comes on. Take it in, multiple chevy dealerships “fix” the errors such as fuel line pump 5x, gear shift issues, modules that went bad and various other issues. I routinely take care of vehicle (oil changes, tire rotations and service when needed) this truck will randomly shut off while driving (stop and go traffic ) I was told to turn off the start/stop which I do every time I get in the truck. However it recently wouldn’t turn over after going through a car wash, it would try and try till I manually stopped it. It’s running rough now and I pray everyday the check engine light doesn’t come on or that it doesn't just shut off mid drive. This truck has been hell on wheels and I bought it with 10 miles on it. Bought it from autonation in 12/2023.

The engines lifters failed in cylinder 7 . In which the engine had to be replaced. It has had all of the proper services on time.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 75 mph, the engine shut off without warning. The contact safely coasted to the shoulder of the road and requested assistance from 911 to secure the vehicle from oncoming traffic. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer, where a diagnostic assessment confirmed a total engine failure, requiring replacement. The contact had previously taken the vehicle to a dealer for NHTSA campaign number: 25v274000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the inspection yielded no visible issues, and the recall was marked as completed. The vehicle remained at the dealer and had yet to be repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 25,500.

Oil cooler failed and truck was at dealer for a month over winter. Now June 20th transmission failed and there is no timeframe on the valve body. I am still making payments on this truck and no dealers have a timeframe.

6. 2l/l87 engine passed pico test in August 2025 (24,190 miles). Switched to 0w-40. Engine lost propulsion in June 2026 (32,371 miles). Towed to dealer. Engine replaced in July 2026.

Engine seized middle of road had to coast off into a safe spot to park.

2024 silverado 3. 0 rst turbo replacement, followed by engine replacement at 80k miles. Advised the dealership about the transmission at about 85k miles. At 103,000 miles the transmission failed. Gm is denying any responbility. This is already a known issue yet gm keeps denying it. Major saftey issue from the beggining of the purchase. Every complaint has been noted by the dealership.

The 6. 2 liter engine has been recalled. The problem is if you pass inspection you are now required to use a higher grade of oil. This results in an additional cost of about $50 per change. The reimbursement of the difference should have been covered by the recall as this was not an intended cost when I purchased the truck.

On [xxx], I was going to atlanta, the truck started hesitating harshly while I was passing another driver on a two lane road. The truck wouldn’t accelerate and the paddle seemed to be stuck, I had to pull off the road to avoid a head on collision. On the 30th of may, I took the truck to allen turner in pensacola, florida where I purchased it and reported the issue, the service department was closed and they sent me next door to a Chevrolet dealership, which was also closed. On today [xxx], I took the truck out for a test drive, and I had the same incident happen, but this time I pulled into a gas station and shutdown the truck. Once I turned the truck back on, the check engine light came on. I didn’t think I would make it back home, because the truck didn’t accelerate correctly, and when I pressed the gas pedal it didn’t accelerate and was making different noises. The pedal seemed to be stuck, with no acceleration. I recorded a little bit with my phone while trying to drive, but it’s not the best. L87 engine failure.

Original 6. 2l engine was replaced subsequent to NHTSA report 11724274 from catatrophic engine failure on January 31, 2026 at 25,274 miles. Original engine was manufactured on may 30, 2024, but silverado hc was manufactured on June 9, 2024, so it was not captured in existing NHTSA campaign 25v?274 and subsequent gm 6. 2l recall and is not currently included in expanded factory 10/150,000 powertrain warranty. Due to original catastrophic engine failure due to crank and connecting rod, covered transmission damage was discovered, truck is currently on third torque converter and transmission has been out of truck for repairs to valve body and 4-10/reverse piston twice. Replacement 6. 2l engine lasted 3,900 miles before exhibiting significant lifter tick bank one/driver side, tear down revealed failed lifter which wiped out a lobe on cam. Gm tac refused engine replacement, instead replaced one cam, 16 lifters and trays on bank one. Drove truck for approximately 300 miles after repair and engine began exhibiting significant knocking from bottom of engine, second replacement engine is now being installed. All routine maintenance and warranty work has been performed and documented at gm certified dealer service department.

While I was visiting my mother in kentucky my 6. 2 truck engine failed. It all happened really quick and no warning signs prior. Truck passed recall in April 26. I just left visiting my mother at nursing home. I was on mountain parkway when it all of a sudden started making a noise. It sounded like it was coming through firewall. All of sudden check engine light came on and I pulled over right before off ramp. I turned truck off for couple of minutes and started it back up. No light but as soon as I pulled back onto parkway noise started again. I was next to off ramp so I pulled into marathon gas station and as I was pulling in it died and wouldn’t start back. Truck was taken to dealership on 5/24. They said they can’t give me a courtesy vehicle due to me living out of state and I would have to get a rental on my own but gm would cover up to $44 per day. I contacted gm twice and said I needed to speak to dealer about getting a car. I explained what dealer told me but they said it was out of their control. Still paying for rental out of pocket. Dealer called and verified that engine needs replaced and new engine is back ordered with no eta. I’m still paying truck payment on a truck I don’t have and no help from gm on giving a car to drive. Need help with escalating new engine replacement and rental that gm is covering.

Truck engine shut off doing 60. Has major recall and issue these trucks are unsafe I was very scared.

L87 6. 2l engine failed. Loud knocking, no oil pressure, engine stalled and would not restart. This happened despite gm's recall where they changed to 0w40 oil.

Vehicle had died before and was brought to dealer but was restartrd, no problem could be found. Two weeks later, engine locked up on a 70mph highway. With children and wife in vehicle. Could not restart. Had to be towed to dealer. No previous lights or warnings before engine locking up.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet silverado. The contact stated that while driving at 69 mph when the vehicle experienced a total loss of automotive power and all of the warning lights were illuminated; a message was displayed on the instrument panel "reduce acceleration, drive with care" and the vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and the contact was advised that engine had experienced catastrophic engine failure as a result of the pistons and rods exploding into the engine, and that the engine would have to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however the check engine warning light had remained illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 7,948.

The engine has a loud knock and tick noise, the dealership said vehicle was fine changed the oil to a thicker oil and sent me on my way. No messages or symptoms besides the loud noises engine still running but has loud knock and tick noise from time to time after the oil was replaced.

Vehicle suddenly stalls and reduces speed at different times with no warning. At first it would show that message after car washes or rainy days but now randomly it’ll reduce speed in unexpected moments causing safety concerns. It reduces speed, stalls, drives forcefully, and shows a “reduced acceleration drive with care”. Sudden stalls have become a danger to my family and myself as we depend on this car to get to and from on a daily basis. Dealership states it’s the tcm but not covered under warranty. But the vehicle is new how is it that it already has defects.

I was driving home from work, and dash warning sign came on and told me to start engine. I was currently driving at approximately 60 mph. When I came to blinking red light I went to accelerate and truck was unresponsive. It would not accelerate and engine was off. I went to start engine and it just cranked with no start. I used onstar to get a tow truck. I was broken down in the middle of an intersection and had to wave traffic around me for 1hr 45 min. Finally tow truck came and took truck to local chevy dealership. Upon inspection they stated that it needs a new engine. I had the truck in the Chevrolet dealership in Feb 2026 to have the 6. 2 recall done, they performed the full recall and said everything looks good. Truck has approximately 60k miles on it. It failed a few months after inspection. They stated they have ordered a new engine and it would be approximately 4-6weeks minimum. Truck is sitting at the dealership.

The primary failure is in the electronic transmission control system and engine wiring harness assembly, specifically throwing diagnostic trouble codes p0700 (transmission control system malfunction) and p0717 (input speed sensor circuit no signal). The authorized dealership identified a critical issue with the engine harness chafing, but their subsequent repair attempts have failed to resolve the recurring powertrain failure. The complete vehicle and all affected components are currently parked and fully available for immediate physical inspection at my residence upon request. While operating the vehicle at highway speeds, the powertrain abruptly loses throttle response and forces itself into a severe, uncommanded "reduced power / limp mode. " this creates a severe safety hazard by instantly dropping vehicle velocity on active interstates and high-speed roadways, leaving the vehicle unable to accelerate out of harms way or merge safely, placing myself, my passengers, and surrounding motorists at immediate risk of a high-speed rear-end collision. The malfunction has been repeatedly confirmed and documented by authorized gm service agent rountree moore Chevrolet (lake city, FL) across three separate service visits. The dealer confirmed the active trouble codes and attempted various repairs (including transmission control module reprogramming on 04/24/2026, engine harness chafing repairs on 05/19/2026, and auxiliary fluid/battery adjustments on 05/21/2026). The persistence of the failure confirms the dealer has been unable to successfully remedy the defect. To date, the vehicle has only been inspected and worked on by the authorized dealership's factory-trained technicians. It has not yet been involved in a collision requiring police or insurance representative inspections, nor has a corporate field engineer from general motors inspected it outside of the local dealership level. The failures are consistently preceded by an illumination of the dashboard check engine.

I am reporting a safety defect involving a gm 6. 2l l87 engine. My vehicle was included in the gm recall related to engine failure (loss of propulsion). The recall remedy was performed, and the engine was replaced under recall/warranty in August 2025. After the recall repair and engine replacement, the vehicle experienced a second catastrophic engine failure, on April 21st. The engine failed again while on a highway, resulting in loss of vehicle function and leaving me stranded. This occurred after the manufacturer had already attempted to remedy the defect. The vehicle has now been out of service for an extended period (approximately 2. 5 months total across both events - and ongoing), and I am continuing to make payments on a vehicle that is not operable. This appears to be a failure of the recall remedy itself, not just the original defect. I am concerned this represents a broader safety issue involving post-recall failures of the l87 engine, as currently under investigation. I am requesting that this incident be included in the ongoing federal investigation into gm 6. 2l engine failures.

While driving, the truck suddenly boggs down and gets sluggish. A message appeared once that said reduced acceleration drive with care. It is dangerous because it loses power and stalls in front of other vehicles. I took it to the dealership on Friday the 17th and they said it was the crank position sensor. They ordered the part and I took it back on Monday the 20th and they replaced the sensor. Today, while driving down the highway it did the same thing again. I will be taking it back to the dealership tomorrow. The truck has 26,000 miles on it.

Was driving the truck on the highway at 75mph when suddenly the motor revved up in rpm’s and vehicle lost all power. There was no warning lights or any limp mode or anything as such as far as warning. The truck lost all power and could hear metal to metal sounds and turned off the motor. I was able to coast the truck to an off ramp in 70mph traffic. The truck would not turn back on and vehicle was immobile, had to have the vehicle towed by a flatbed to a gm dealer near by. The dealer gave me a loaner pickup and hasn’t looked at my vehicle yet. I bought this pickup less then 3 weeks ago and the l87 recall and oil change had been done prior to me buying it. I was just happy that the truck didnt full shut down at that speed and cause a crash etc. Dealer said motor failure to me and couldn’t confirm a turn around time frame for my truck to get back to me.

On 04/16/2026, while driving, vehicle received and completed a software/firmware ota update. A second update completion prompt was received while still in motion. Shortly after, while stopped at a traffic light, the auto-start/stop system re-engaged and the vehicle appeared to restart normally. Upon stopping to refuel, remote key fob auto-start failed to respond. Vehicle was started manually and driven to the next location. On arrival, remote key fob auto-start failed again. Used interior push-to-start — vehicle started but displayed an active check engine light. Connected vehicle app diagnostic scan of the engine and transmission system returned two warning flags requiring service: - transmission system — schedule service now - engine electrical system including charging and starting system — schedule service now all other scanned systems (air induction, fuel management, engine cooling, throttle control, ignition, variable valve timing, 4wd, displacement on demand) returned ok. Both faults appeared immediately following the ota update. Remote start failure at two consecutive locations and the check engine light activation are directly correlated in timing with the update applied on 04/16/2026. No fault codes have been pulled yet — dealership service appointment pending. This is not the first instance of an issue after updates are applied, between the infotainment system blacking out, rear camera or adas not functioning as well as sporadic crackling sound almost like electricity arcing in the engine compartment near the steering column.

These are two separate incidents. The first one is the seat moves to the left or to the right given the direction of the vehicle. The other incident was when I was reversing into a parking spot. The gear shifted out of reverse and just was in a floating stage. I then had to put it back into reverse to continue it did it twice.

2024 6. 2l silverado trail boss, engine failure at 22k miles on 4/13/26. Dealer confirmed the failure (not sure which bearings seized since engine has not been torn down yet, was either crank or rod bearings) and ordered a new engine 4/14/26. I was driving on the interstate and the engine started lightly shuddering during acceleration, showing some loss in power and shifting oddly but no check engine lights and nothing too alarming to immediately pull over. After several miles of this, the engine started to emit a loud metal on metal squeaking/scraping sound when on the throttle but stopped when I would back off the throttle. About a mile later, the truck just shut off at 70mph and went to neutral as I was about to get off an exit to evaluate the issues. Dash said push button to restart as I was coasting, but it wouldn't restart so I put on my hazards and pulled to the shoulder of the highway. Once stopped, it automatically shifted to park and would not crank or allow me to shift to neutral. Flatbed was called and brought it to the dealer. Side note: the truck passed the pico test 1/15/26 at 20k miles and was sent on my way with the thicker 0w-40 oil. Oil was changed every 5k miles and ran 93 octane.
